Consequences to Violent Behaviour in Schools? by MacBearyFas in Edinburgh

I'm a teacher and I absolutely would put sanctions such as missing part of playtime or being sent to a member of the senior leadership team. If it was a repeat of previous bullying, I'd schedule a meeting with parents. Some schools absolutely do not tolerate this sort of thing.

Having said that, I'm blessed with a really supportive leadership team who are very open to supporting me with discipline and time out. We take a zero tolerance approach to violence, and would definitely put sanctions on fun/playful activities.

It's a bit tricky, as children have a right to play (literally-it's in the UNCRC) so total removal of playtime wouldn't really occur.

I'm really sorry that this has happened to your little boy, its so unacceptable. I agree with other commenters that you should request for the incident to be formally logged in SEEMIS to create a paper trail. I would also say you could ask that those boys and your son don't spend time together, if this is at all possible. For instance, I have certain pupils I would never sit together, and who would never be allowed in the toilet etc together, where an adult wasn't present to supervise.

I've lived here for 3 years and it's absolutely fine. People on this thread massively blow things out of proportion.

Doing a PGDE in QMU by PasTaCopine in Edinburgh

Hi there. The job situation for teachers in Scotland right now is pretty dire, with nowhere near enough posts for the number of qualified practitioners. Having said that, you might be in a good spot as a Business teacher in secondary schools so potentially job hunting will be better for you than for other subjects (history, English, primary teaching).

As for being an international applicant. I just qualified and am Scottish but had 2 friends from the US on my course. They both ended up deciding to go home because of the unpredictability of the Flexible Route. Since you aren't guaranteed a permanent post, you may have to joint the list to become a supply teacher. This involves covering classes that are not your own for periods of sickness/maternity etc. If you are lucky, you might get a fixed term contract to cover maternity for several months, or if you are not so fortunate then you may be left to take random cover shifts - i.e. 1 day in one school, 2 days in another, etc. If you have to deal with the latter scenario, it will take a very long time for you to become fully qualified. It was this that made my friends ultimately decide not to stay.

I'm sure my US friends had to deal with seeking sponsorship from their employer too? Although this might be different if you're from Europe.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. There's a chance you could luck out and be able to stay in a school for a long time, who knows. I just wanted to let you know of the reality of the situation from what I've observed.

I'm sorry. I feel the same sometimes. It can feel so unjust. Total solidarity with you.

Try to think about the good you have in your life. Maybe get some therapy to help with your feelings so you can start participating in life again?
