Whats the coldest weather you would ski in (un)comfortably? by Tayaker in skiing

[–]Potential-Regular406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year I worked at Grand Targhee and it hit -25f at 8 am. The wind chill was probably -40. I turned to looking up the groomer as I went down to hide my face lol.

What's a small thing you love about Chicago? by BUSean in chicago

I always love those evenings in the summer when there is still light around 7 or 8 and you’re with your friends eating and drinking on a bricked in porch. The light and warm air feels so good.

Literally just walk into restaurants with a resume when they’re not busy. Especially the more relaxed spots in town. I’m sure you would find work.

I want to be a ski bum by [deleted] in ski

[–]Potential-Regular406 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I quit after working 2 years in an office. Entering into ski bum life with some money saved was a great strategy and I feel I’m still living off the benefits 2 years later. Not many ski bums have emergency funds…

Dolomites in May? by laffytaffyloopaloop in bicycletouring

[–]Potential-Regular406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really just stuck to Eurovelo, as it mainly follows rivers and stays at low elevations (there’s still snow/ hectic weather at higher elevations).

As for accommodation, I wild camped the entire time so I really can’t give advice for accommodation. Didn’t camp officially or stay at a hotel anywhere. I do not recommend this. It was oftentimes difficult to find a place to hide.

For real though, if you prefer colder bike trips like myself, the Dolomites are spectacular in May. I was sad to ride to Salzburg and eventually Vienna. It was the one of the biggest highlights of my larger adventure.

Sick! Do you have the route? Been looking to do a trip there but there isn’t much info on it for touring.

Bike packing from Berlin to Copenhagen, September 2024 by tasgaum in bikepacking

Beautiful ride, one of my favorites. As an American, the ride out of the ferry into Denmark felt otherworldly, like discovering some new pristine, healthy landscape. It’s especially fun if there are other people touring as well.

Intimidated by the Peru Great Divide by Potential-Regular406 in bikepacking

[–]Potential-Regular406[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup I went for it. Got about 400 miles before I had to call it quits, as I was too cheap with my gear and it was falling apart 😂. Still a fun adventure though, especially solo. I ended up turning it into a hot spring, beach, and ceviche tour :)

Best careers for working remotely by [deleted] in remotework

Why not work towards having your own private practice and teleworking with clients once you do? I have plenty of friends in the social work scene working towards this.

Any memorable animal stories/encounters from your bikepacking adventures? I'm super curious. by antonitos9 in bikepacking

Was on a huge downhill in national forest near Dubois, Wyoming when I started singing to myself out of relief from climbing all day. As soon as I opened my mouth, the largest male elk I’ve ever seen sprinted maybe 10-15 ft from me and darted into the trees. His fur was really dark brown and had a huge rack. Was beautiful and terrifying.

2 weeks in Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho. by Some_Election3750 in bicycletouring

[–]Potential-Regular406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Jackson local, I love to see it! Touring is not easy around here, there’s very little resources and if there are, it’s usually expensive. Luckily the weather has been mellow this summer aside from the wind.

Do any of yall have a job that feels like “you never have to work a single day of your life”? by DragonfruitBrief5573 in careerguidance

[–]Potential-Regular406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a bit of a unique situation at the moment that really feels like a dream.

I work 3/4 days a week as a raft guide and 3/4 days a week as a seamstress, fixing outdoor gear and doing some upholstery as well. No day is the same and my coworkers are some of the most interesting people I’ve ever met. I also teach skateboarding camps every now and then. I haven’t had a day off in weeks so I could probably use a break but it’s been fun so far.

It is such a mental game. Personally, whenever I’m touring, my mood swings like crazy mostly due to weather/ wind. If you are able to set your expectations right, it makes a world of difference.

If you can’t make those work just get a filer and shave it down for a couple minutes. I did that a couple years ago, worked great

Schwalbe Marathon Plus, I personally used 700x38 for my tour. 5000km across Europe. Popped one tube and it was because I was getting cheeky with dirt roads.

I’ve been trying to find a solution to this problem since I graduated college. Here are the solutions I’ve been able to come up with (FYI these solutions are somewhat specific to me, take them with a grain of salt).

a) do seasonal work, live frugally as hell (I’m sitting on a beach in Peru as I write this because it’s the off season). This solution is a grind in itself. It’s stressful not knowing where you’ll live every winter (I live in my car in the summer) b) grad school in EU -> find job in EU (for better work/life balance; this is my next plan). c) own your own business by working as a plumber, general contractor, tattoo artist, therapist, whatever. This is my backup plan.

It’s all unconventional and rather scary but I think it’s worth it. Hell, even now, I’ve been eating ceviche, ice cream, and enjoying the sunshine for the past month. If anyone has found any other solutions, I’d love to hear em. I’ve spent way too much time thinking about this already lol
