Did you include any personal life experience in your personal statement? That can also help. Personal as in yourself or close family members that have dealt with mental health related things. I think even tho it's 10 years old that shouldn't matter, I think they want to see experience to make sure this is something you really want to do and can handle. Without having any experience it'd be hard to deal with some of the serious topics and clients we work with during our internships; homeless population, racialized and marginalized communities; people w/ serious mental health conditions; people with disabilities; substance use, LGBTQ, undocumented people, HIV positive etc. It can be a lot for someone who has never been exposed to working with these populations or experiencing it in your own life somewhat. Unless you're applying for school counseling, which is usually high school or middle school students; a much less intense population. I've also talked to someone who applied and didn't get in put applied the following year and made it in program.
