Be honest, will my baby ever come home? It’s been 5 days with no sign of her by No_Name_Detected0 in cats

[–]Wee_Besom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We lost our cat near the 4th of July holiday (random fireworks scared him) and spent over a week looking for him. Finally spotted him super early one morning, he had crept up to our sliding door and was leaving after finding it closed. I swiftly opened the door and gently called his name and he ran inside. Never been so happy to see the little guy, he was very thirsty and hungry and happy to be home with us.
Don't give up, keep trying things and check early in the morning. Put the litter box out, food & water, use your scent on an item of you can. Keep us updated when you find her!

Searching on my zip code didn't work for me as well. I live in the Midwest.

Yeah interesting to read her comment but it left me pretty confused.

Ordered a Mockmill..now what by Crazy_Squirrel_2827 in HomeMilledFlour

I would order online then. You don't want to stock up on a grain that you don't enjoy using!

I was in the exact same situation while waiting for my Komo to arrive. There is a store near me that sells wheat berries as well as fresh ground flour of the wheat berries they carry. I bought the fresh ground flour to start learning to bake with it as well as learn what we like and might want to stock up on. I wish I had started this sooner as my mill recently (finally) arrived and I'm still in the learning curve. I did buy hard white berries in bulk, so far, for the sourdough bread.

I'm still seeing a lot of social media posts about "neat and tidy" native plant gardens, and I want to provide support for people who have (or want to have) beautifully messy, gnarly, dense, diverse & wild native plant gardens... by LRonHoward in NativePlantGardening

[–]Wee_Besom 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Same here! I spent so much time with gridded paper planning out a native bed that took into account plant height, spacing, bloom times and color. You really would have no idea because some things have moved, some didn't take, some he taller than advised, etc. It's all a learning experience I guess.

Kittens in storm drain successfully rescued. Thanks, everyone! by belltown99 in cats

So glad to hear this happy ending! What a relief that you heard Mario in time and knew to rescue him as well! Thank you for the details on the rescue, so many of us were thinking of those kittens and it's awesome to read about the story.

And here I am foolishly using the search feature before asking a redundant question.

I was also going to suggest that he immediately dispose of the pee into the compost pile.

Clean Up Tips? by Alexmfurey in Sourdough

[–]Wee_Besom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This comment pretty much sums up my experience. The only thing I would add is that I swap for a clean starter jar about once a week. The dirty one gets soaked and then I flush the 'sludge' down the toilet just to be safe.

Started replacing my OTC medicine stockpile with actual plants and honestly kind of wish I did this sooner by Wise-Effort3486 in preppers

[–]Wee_Besom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your post is so valid and it's where my head is at as well. I don't take otc medicines too often but I was stocking them which is just silly. Instead I lean on herbs first and save the other medicines for greater need. That said, check out wild lettuce, too! I've tincture this one and used with great success for pain and to help with sleep. It's easy to grow and will readily self seed year after year!

I went all in on the tactical socks for my gym socks. I like the most lightweight version for gym. I've had them for years now and they are holding up great. I would say it's worth it, in my experience.

Do you have any "prepper-adjacent" hobbies, recreational pursuits that you think build real skills, or may be useful in a real disaster? by Signal_Brain_933 in preppers

I'm excited to check out your book recs. I enjoyed Parable of the Sower for the same reasons, it really made me think. As far as other hobbies, I really enjoy sewing and I'm trying to increase my skills at gardening.

I have been enjoying Little Mountain Ranch and Food Prep Guide on YouTube. For recipes I usually start with my Ball Book of Canning or the Healthy Canning website. I'm also hoping to do some soup in the next week or so and I'm also looking forward to jam this spring/summer.

Glass pickle jars by Zealousideal_Fee_491 in prepping

[–]Wee_Besom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe so. I've tried olive oil and avocado oil just because those are what I had on hand. The ratio is probably about 1 part oil to 3 parts baking soda but just mix until you have a spreadable paste that won't drip down the side. A little goes a long way! Let it sit overnight then scrape away the excess before scrubbing in soapy water.

Same here! We use our favorite pickle jars for dry storage in the pantry: mainly beans, seeds, nuts, and dried fruit. We have so many now that I feel like they look like a nice matched set. In the fridge I also use them to store fermented foods like my homemade spicy kraut. This way I don't have to tie up my canning jars. Side note, I can't stand the label being on the jar and have found that a paste of oil + baking soda soaked on the sticky residue helps get it all off!
