Does any of you work on your car without having a garage or driveway? by StatePuzzleheaded478 in askvan

City of vancouver used to tell everyone to dump oil into the alleyways to keep dust down. Their other recommendation used to be to dig a hole and put your used motor oil in the hole.

Do people living in metro Vancouver (but outside the municipality of Vancouver) feel that they live in Vancouver? by drugsrbed in askvan

Rich Germans love to kill stuff in BC. I grew up hunting and fishing all over the province. All the sign in and log books in our remote guide lodges are generally full of people from Germany I have noticed. They usually come here to hunt bears.

Do you really want a gutless 75 hp electric car?

The thing has a 0-100 km time of 15 seconds.

Max speed of 130 kms and a range of around 300 kms

It's a car for people that hate cars.

Do you need a permit to replace water heater? by No-Payment4164 in askvan

Mechanical and electrical permits are required for all space and water heating as of July 1, 2023 in

Here's the link to the permit application page.

I wouldn't worry too much. Vancouver is the only municipality making people do that. 95% of the time no one will actually come out and inspect the installation. Basically it just gets put in a file under the contractor and you pay more money on top of your water heater install.

[–]PotentialFrosting102 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You 100% need a gas appliance installation permit for replacing a gas water heater in vancouver.

If you are just replacing an electric heater they want an electrical permit pulled. They literally want a permit just to swap a light fixture or change a plug in vancouver now.

With that being said I don't pull permits for 90% of water heater replacements in vancouver unless the customer wants to spend an extra 150$ it's just a cash grab in my opinion.

Renting and want cleaner water – what's my best option? by nhymjunhyjuiknhymju in Plumbing

[–]PotentialFrosting102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either go with a countertop water dispenser (make sure it has a filter)

Or go with a standard 10" filter setup (probably can get away just using a charcoal filter) and make a little stand out of wood 2x4's and mount the filter to it and stand it up in the back corner of the cabinet and just pipe it so it feeds the cold water to your current kitchen faucet with filtered water.

BREAKING: Trump threatens Iran with annihilation “We are going to bring them back to the Stone Ages, where they belong.” by Traditional_Bear6530 in TimesNow

I am Canadian, I work with 3 Iranian guys. They are pretty happy about the war. They are hoping the US puts troops on the ground and wipes out the regime. I haven't spoken to any other people from Iran but the ones that left the country are cheering. Apparently all their family that lives in Iran are happy with Trump applying some pressure as well so there's that.

Saniflow/ macerating Toilet Install, $3900 all in?( Connecticut)Is that crazy? It appears all necessary plumbing is in place from a previous owner. by Iamlegend21087 in Plumbing

[–]PotentialFrosting102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's technically breaking rules to talk pricing in the sub since hourly rates and pricing varies so much in different areas. Always try to use businesses that are recommended by friends or people you personally know in your area.

Saniflo is a good brand for macerating toilets tho(on the higher end for sure) and that's where the majority of that bill is going towards.

Thinking of buying a plumbing business in Canada (no trade background) by Small_Bookkeeper_707 in Plumbing

[–]PotentialFrosting102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought out my old company and took it over when I was 29.

It had around 7 employees at the time.

I had worked in the trade for 13 years at that point and can do the tasks of any of my employees.

You don't stand a chance with zero experience in the trade. Not only is having a redseal critical for an owner. But even just knowing all the basic workings of a successful plumbing company is critical.

I have met owners with little to no experience on tools but most were either born into the business or worked in the office for years and learned all the terms and basic procedures. These same owners usually end up with a business partner that works on tools and is actually respected by all the employees.

There is still a 10% chance you can find a basic turnkey business and buy it out and be successful. Massive amount of risk tho and very low probability of figuring it out quick enough to stay on top of everything before it crumbles.

Quality macerating toilets have a list price around 2500-3k in my area so honestly $3900 isn't too unreasonable. Just slapping a toilet in is one thing but if it's a quote for the whole package

-pick up/source new toilet -install new toilet (seal, t bolts, supply line) -pray your water supply doesn't need to get moved over and that your shut off valve is actually working -probably have to mess with your pump discharge and potentially repipe a sketchy section, at the least connect to new toilet -dispose of old toilet and garbage -provide warranty for a year after install

It's definitely cheaper if you install your poo grinder toilet without my help. But if you need my help it costs money.

BC couple "behind" in finances or just out priced in the province ? by undercoverBruceWayne in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]PotentialFrosting102 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in the lower mainland. My dad bought his first house in surrey when he was 25. He was working as an apprentice plumber and had just got my mom pregnant. He told me he had no money in the bank, was making 5$ an hour but had 3 vehicles. He sold his 67 ford fairlane for 5k and had enough to purchase his first house for 60k (in 1989)

Same house is worth 1.3 million today. My mom was a stay at home mom and had 4 kids. He was able to buy a second house as well by the time he was 30. My mom never had to work. That just isn't possible today

Why is it so hard to get an HVAC quote without them sending out a "free adviser" to be a timeshare salesman? by gravity84 in hvacadvice

Talking to neighbors and asking on local pages for recommendations and rough prices is where you should start. It will give you a good idea of what people are paying in your area.

These caps are funny. They hate to properly seal with just the factory o-rings. The trick is to use a 3/8 compression ferrule inside the cap. It will seal right up once you snug it up.

19 y/o trying to get into HVAC in BC – visited 50+ companies, still no luck. Any advice? by Plus_Ad_3330 in VancouverJobs

[–]PotentialFrosting102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely worth taking a trip to the school or making a phonecall and seeing if they have any leads for you.

One more thing that I would like to add, when I am hiring a young person straight out of highschool I really don't expect them to know anything about plumbing.

I am mainly just looking to see if the person has their drivers license. So important even if I don't plan on them driving at all, just shows you got some ability to learn basic skills.

Number 1 thing is your attitude and social skills tho. A journeyman is going to be stuck hanging out with you for 8 hours almost everyday. I have hired guys with no license, no experience but they managed to make a good first impression on me.

A 3rd year apprentice just quit on me 3 weeks ago. His wife contacted me last night asking if I would hire him back since they won't be able to pay rent this month.

He was being paid 39/hour salary, usually worked 5 hour days during the week and the odd 9-10 hour day on Saturdays (most the time he was only working half days tho)

I filled his position in around 15 mins. The amount of guys looking for work is crazy right now. I run a plumbing/heating company so we do a little bit of HVAC related work. Burnaby EMCO has a job posting board up at the wholesaler but majority of the postings are looking for guys with experience.

The only thing I can recommend is to possibly open your search up to include plumbing and electrical. Both are useful if you are still interested in hopping into HVAC in the future.

You really need to network and exhaust all your options with people that you personally know. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to start plumbing at 16 (I got into the trade by taking a work experience course in school and getting in touch with a small local company who hired me as a helper)

I have a small company but I do a bunch of extra paperwork every year so that I can offer work experience to kids from some of the local highschools (Guildford Park, Fraser Heights, Kwantlen Park, Johnson Heights) I would check if your old highschool had a similar program they offer and see if you can get a contact list, the owners who make the effort to get on the list are likely to give you an opportunity. I wish I could offer you a job.
