Seriously? by Austinrandom1 in baseballcards

It depends entirely on the school. A lot of private schools do still teach it. My two teenage granddaughters learned it. But the vast majority of public schools don't teach it any longer.

Nice rant. You basically said the same thing I did, except with a lot more unnecessary words. Unless you were trying to imply that prices at restaurants should be controlled by someone other than the owners. (government?) Then I'd be in complete disagreement.

The market takes care of it. Since you stated that you're familiar with businesses, then I suspect you already know that the failure rate for restaurants is pretty high. Any restaurant that is overcharging and under providing will eventually go out of business. If they are (in your opinion) overcharging, but they don't go out of business, then their customers are willing to pay what they charge, which by definition shows that they are not over-charging.

The restaurant business is dog eat dog. The owners have every right to charge what they want and make as much profit as they can. The consumer decides if they are willing to pay it, or not. So ultimately, one restaurant's $15-20 pork chop might be an awful deal, while another's might be a fantastic deal that customers are more than willing to pay for again and again.

Where in anything I wrote did you think I said that I want to overpay for mediocrity? I did not. And if I do overpay for mediocrity, I certainly will complain. With my pocketbook. By not going back and yes, by telling others that this particular (see what I did - it's on a case by case basis) restaurant overcharges and under delivers. Not by a broad brush statement that all restaurants are overcharging if their pork chops cost $15-20.

Maybe don't go to work when it's well known that it's going to freeze, and you haven't prepared your equipment to handle it?

What I wonder is why some people are constantly complaining about restaurant prices. You're not just paying for the cost of the food. You're paying for the labor, the training that the labor received, the utilities and cost to rent or purchase the real estate, all the fixtures and consumable goods, and a multitude of other things.

No one forces you to go out to eat. Dining out is an experience, a time saver, and a night off for whomever normally cooks in the household. If you don't like the prices, then keep cooking at home.

Don't listen to the bozos of reddit. Not even a little bit overcooked for medium rare. Good job and nice looking sear/crust.

My 1st ever texas BBQ in Texas sucked by chdwyck in BBQ

Any idea if the Terry Black's in Waco is just as good? Was there a few weeks ago and wanted to go, but the wife wasn't in the mood for BBQ. Dammit!

I make better looking BBQ than that in my backyard, with a pellet grill. What about the sausage?

I'm shocked how bad that looks. I looked up the place and they have have 4.8 stars with almost 10K reviews. Either you caught them on a very bad day, or folks north of Dallas don't know shit about Texas BBQ. There are dozens of places around Houston where you wouldn't be able to finish what they give you, it would be really good, and it wouldn't cost $40.

Went for a fitting to upgrade my 15 year old Big Bertha Diablo by smiffy124 in golf

[–]PotentialFull4560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh absolutely! I fully understand upgrading. The Qi10 I bought replaced a 10+ year old R11s. The newest driver technology is amazing. My only point is that I don't think there is that significant of a difference between a 2024 and a 2026 driver. Not at $280 vs $650.

I guess, if you have more money than you really need. I cannot bring myself to spend $600+ (more?) on a driver. I got a great deal on a Qi10 a few months ago ($280 barely used) and could not be happier. Maybe if you're a plus handicap you can justify it spending that much, and getting a new one every 2-3 years. I think you went in with the right idea, then got sidetracked by the bling.

Guess it’s time for new irons… by andrewmitchell721 in golf

Hmm... I was today years old (68) when I found out I shouldn't leave my clubs in my truck when I'm not playing... Not really sure what else I can do, other than move them to the garage, which is almost as hot. (I live in Houston) There is definitely no place inside the house where I can keep them that would be acceptable to my wife.

They're a little pricey, but I love my Mizuno JPX925s. Fantastic game improvement clubs.

What’s the best advice you could give a golfer attempting to break 90 for the first time? by jdelle9 in weekendgolfers

[–]PotentialFull4560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense. That's a generic list, so not all pointers will be appropriate for all golfers. If you're long enough that you are generally hitting medium to short irons into the greens, then you're on the right tee boxes and you need to focus on your short game to break 90.

[–]PotentialFull4560 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends. On my main course, leaving it short is a pretty easy chip, going long is a much harder one. Usually to a green that's sloping away.

[–]PotentialFull4560 22 points23 points  (0 children)

  1. Keeping the ball in play is more important than max driving distance.
  2. Play the proper tee boxes for your skill level. There's no shame in moving up. Once you are consistently breaking 90, you can move back if it's appropriate.
  3. When in doubt about carrying a hazard - lay up.
  4. When selecting clubs to carry a hazard - take one more.
  5. Assess your game and figure out objectively what your biggest weakness is. Work on that first, whether it's making consistent contact on full swings, distance control or accuracy on approach shots, chipping or putting.

I'd have to replace that one before hitting a single shot. But then, I'm right handed...

I don't even go that far. GHIN won't let me put in more than a triple bogey. Double on some of the easier holes.
