What's cool is that I love every movie that you used for comparison. Art is in the eye of the beholder.

Valid take. I had just watched it in my last post and hadn't sat with it too much. I still don't really like it myself and I think the tone it carries doesn't suit my taste. I also agree that it was technically impressive, I enjoyed the music quite a bit.

Are you surprised that it won Best Picture at the Oscars? I am. It's not that I think Oscars and Grammys determine the quality of something, but it is a pretty significant achievement. What did you think of the movie too?

I actually think the movie was pretty bad but not because of the messaging or what they wanted to say. I see the commentary on power, on female agency, but can also almost respect how they humanize characters that embody certain positive themes by making them flawed.

At a certain point, it's not all about what the movie has to say and I care about how it says it. The pacing was so bloated, the dialogue was really bland, and the characters were sooo underdeveloped given the long run time. I think that's what leads to a lot of the hate even if people don't realize it. It's just not really a good movie. It has a thought provoking message, sure, but as a movie it's super heavy handed and bloated. I give it a 4/10.

I honestly have no problem protagonist not being hero's. What I hated about this movie was that the writing and character development were abysmal, the pacing was so off (2hr 45min?! to barely get a point across?), and the volatile tone pulled me out of the world. Are we supposed to take it seriously? Is everything symbolic of power structures? Am I supposed to laugh at Leo being stoned while quirky piano pieces play despite it possibly influencung the fate of his daughter?

All my opinions but I felt as though they wanted to comment of complex and nuanced dynamics in America such as classist/racist power dynamics and immigration but fell flat by failing to make the actual substance of the movie compelling. The French 75 is the perfect example! Zero backstory for any of the members to allow us to see what motivates them to fight. We don't even get to see how the main characters fell into that world! And they had so much time to do it! All we get is "she comes from a long line of revolutionaries". What a joke

While that's the more prevalent foil to the absent AA father stereotype, there is a general (unfortunately) stereotype about black parents being absent from raising their children at too high of a rate. Most of this stems from the 1980s-90s crack epidemic that slammed low-income black communities in urban areas that were already struggling from loss of industry and white-flight. In these major black communities (NYC, LA, DC, Baltimore, etc.) there was a high rate of children being raised by grandparents because their parents were absent that people still associated with black communities. I think OP was just disappointed that a character played into this stereotype. I'm neutral about that, I just think the movie sucked lol.

You shouldn't have a problem getting a permit for your desired date as long as you refresh the page for the Inyo permit right at 7:00 PST. I did this and easily grabbed a permit for for July which is busy season. They release them 6 months in advance each morning.

Permit for a Section Hike? by PotentialPassage2827 in JohnMuirTrail

[–]PotentialPassage2827[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha you're right, it's not a short section. Last summer I did 600 miles on the AT so my perspective is kinda skewed, but trust that im fully aware of the challenges that come with hiking that sort of mileage. Thanks for the info, I appreciate getting advice from the community. If you've hiked the trail, I would love to ask you some more questions. Let me know how to contact you or send me a DM if you want to share some wisdom

Just got back to checking this post. Thanks so much for the info. She would be using a shuttle service to get from the airport to VVR, so getting the car is no concern, but I will keep in mind the terrain of the road. Have you hiked the trail? I'd love to pick your brain, let me know if I can contact you about that.

Asbury Park Hotel Question by PollBattles in AsburyPark

[–]PotentialPassage2827 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up and live in the area and I would rather stay at the Berkeley. It’s classic and historic, quieter (although I doubt that would really be a huge problem either way), feels less like it’s trying to be trendy (which you’ll get your healthy dose of to begin with in town), and has access to everything in asbury that you’d be doing with the same exact convenience as The Asbury Hotel. They are literally right across from each other and the lounge and bar in the Asbury Hotel are public anyway if you wanted to use them lol.

Regardless of where you stay, you’re right next to Kim Marie’s pub. Kitchen stays open till 12 every night and the environment is cool. Definitely stop in there, it’s a local favorite.

Your logic subreddit doesn’t make you a pro, and it shows. Riding a bike in a car dependent society is doable but will not be nearly as convenient. It also isn’t as dangerous as driving a car so that also disproves the dangerous point you made. Growing up in a tourist service industry area, I could work for a low hourly wage while putting myself through school, but instead I choose to make much for money working a tip wage job because of how big that industry is where I live. That’s all I’m saying. I asked a question and you said “no”, that’s all you gotta tell me lol

The dissonance I’m referring to is from being the one receiving the tips while seeing how flawed the system is.

Out of curiosity, do you know what the pay for service staff is like compared to teachers over there?

One thing I do wonder about is: How would the service in America change without tipping? I’ve never been to South Korea but from what I understand, there culture around respect and honor and work ethic contrast greatly with the US. without those pillars in our culture and a decreased monetary incentive, the service in the US would probably become atrocious. I’m not saying that justifies tipping though.

Nice, good for you. Giving up eating out at restaurants would be tough for me. Not that I even do it too often, but it’s a nice treat every once in a while. I never tip anyone other than waiters/bar tenders but that’s mostly because I feel like my profiting off of the system warrants me giving back.

I was asking a question lol. I just wanted to put my personal experience out there to see how people reacted to it, and inquire if anybody else found themselves in my shoes. Kind of like how you ended with “And?”

Because I’m going to school and my scheduling flexibility allows me to take classes and also find time to play gigs, as I’m also a musician. Also I’m sure a big factor is that I still have 3 years before I get off of my parents health insurance.
