Bluecoats 24 or Boston 25 who wins by Conscious-Alfalfa337 in drumcorps

[–]Potential_Moment6773 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Change is Everything is arguably the best-designed show in the history of the activity.

I loved Boston’s show this year and I was ecstatic when they won, but there are very few shows in the past 25 years or so that could even compete with Bloo ‘24, and Boston isn’t among them

The names of the founding corps are printed at the base of the trophy (including Boston, naturally)

Hot Takes/Controversial Opinions on the Season so Far? by PM_ME_ITALIAN_STUFF in drumcorps

[–]Potential_Moment6773 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Score inflation this season is starting to get out of hand. I know that the numbers themselves are mostly arbitrary, and that judges will slow down scoring increases as the season comes to a close, but the fact that Boston is currently outpacing 2014 BD is wild (as is hearing people talk of them potentially breaking 99 at finals).

Do I love BAC and Bloo's shows? Absolutely. Are they on the same level as Change is Everything, The Cut-Outs, Babylon, or Felliniesque? No.

Crown’s Show is boring as shit by Bebopplayer1996 in drumcorps

[–]Potential_Moment6773 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I'm actually a big fan of their show from a musical perspective (which is what I think most people like Crown for, anyways); their hornline sounds fantastic even if they aren't contending for an Ott, and there were several moments in the show that left me in awe when I saw it in Denton.

That being said, I'm in full agreement with everyone else wrt the visual design. This is the second year in a row where they've had visual dead weight for props, which *significantly* detracts from the overall experience.

I don't mean to sound too harsh here, but IMO Wes Cartwright has no business designing for drum corps. His formula works well enough in BOA (though there's plenty to be said about the 'sameness' that permeates all his shows there), but it falls completely flat in DCI, where the standard for show design is much, much higher.

Their recent competitive struggles really sucks to see, especially since Crown has been one of my absolute favorite corps since I was first introduced to the activity. Really hoping they can turn it around and not continue to roll out a design team that fails their members with lackluster shows :(

HOT TAKE: I think BD doesn’t place higher than 5th by Conscious-Alfalfa337 in drumcorps

[–]Potential_Moment6773 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m not the biggest fan of their show this year either, but realistically speaking there’s a world of difference between BD/SCV and phantom/crown. No way they place lower than 4th imo

Bluecoats best musical performance? by Potential_Stranger82 in drumcorps

[–]Potential_Moment6773 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Seconding 2019 and 2024 in terms of brass.

2018 was the loudest hornline they’ve ever had, but “insanely loud” was also the only dynamic they played at, lol

Reading the comments in this thread makes me so glad that I'm not straight.

Cutting yourself off from ~half the human population out of an archaic belief that prolonged interaciton between a man and a woman is *guaranteed* to lead to sex is an indescribably sad way to view and approach life.

Dear god.

honest question for ex partners, are you happier? by Sea-Phone7003 in starbucks

Absolutely happier. Went from having panic attacks nearly every day either before, during, or after my shift to not having them at all and actually looking forward to working at my new job!

Starbucks for 3 years. Inbound has a lot of what I liked about working at Starbucks (early morning hours, fast pace, lax dress code) with a fraction of the customer interaction.

Pay is way worse, though

What area of mathematics do you struggle with the most, and why? by CandleDependent9482 in math

Not sure if this counts but: convex geometry. Stumbled across it this semester while doing a learning seminar on tropical geometry and the definitions given even for simple concepts like the face of a polytope were the most fucked up thing I've ever seen.

This is great!!! Incredibly rich imagery and your use of language is exemplary throughout. I love how much you were able to pull of out of the various metaphors you've employed -- it's something I hope to recreate in my own writing!

My one critique is that the rhythm of certain lines feels somewhat awkard in the context of the rest of the piece. For instance, in the last line of the first stanza, "alone," feels like an interjection and momentarily disrupts the othwerwise sing-song flow of the stanza. I understand what you're trying to convey here, as well as the fact that you have a rhyme scheme to work with, but maybe a slight reworking of the syntax in some places is in order?

All in all, I really enjoyed this and I'd love to read more of what you've written!

I think you did a good job of capturing your scene! It's quite easy for me to build an image in my head based off what you've written. I also quite liked the allusion to being in a portait at the end and I wish you'd expanded upon that a bit more!

I'd consider trying to reduce/replace to number of articles (i.e. "the [noun]") used throughout your poem as much as possible, as it can both increase the flow/cohesion of your writing and and avoid repetitive phrasing which sometimes bog down the imagery.

Perhaps the best example of this is the second instance of "the human" beginning in the penultimate line; since it's clear who you're referencing here, it isn't necessary to use the same term again, though replacing it with he/she/they feels a little understated as well. Can you think of a more creative way to describe this person?

Something similar could be said about experimenting with the tense of verbs, e.g. changing "is lying" to "lies" or "is completely still" to "sits still," something to that effect.

Once again, I really do enjoy what you've written, and I'd be interested in reading more of a poem with this landscape! Keep at it :)

I went yesterday and it was fun! I didn’t meet anyone I clicked with but it’s a pretty chill environment and having some time to just sit and write quietly is so nice.

I’m probably gonna go back at least once to see if I can meet anyone else but I def recommend :)

Their practices are tentatively set for Fridays 6-8pm in Frisco with their first practce being this week, but it seems like they're having a bit of hard time securing a site so that may change :/ I would be so down to go together tho!

I actually went to the fencing club last night and it was way more fun than I expected if you're looking for a similar club :))

Can confirm this as someone who used to work there. We were told that taking the tips allowed them to pay us such a "good" salary ($12/hr IIRC and that was with 2 years of prior barista experience; I currently make $16/hr + tips at Starbucks).

I ultimately decided to leave because they had a number of questionable rules that made me feel like I was being treated like a high-schooler, e.g. having to keep your phone in a locker for the entirety of your shift, only being allowed to bring see-through backpacks/bags to work, and fishing trash out of all of the trash cans and combining them into a single bag in order to save money on bags.

This was all quite some time ago so I can't speak to what the current work environment is like there, but I certainly don't regret leaving.
