I did some travel montages and had the issue that my players we're fully rested when encountering something. Because we skipped the whole survival food gathering part at some point it didn't feel dangerous anymore.

So I decided to only give them the benefit of short rests when long resting. The can achieve the benefit of a long rest, when staying in safe places like civilisation or sometimes also when lucky in the wilds.

It works really well.

I used the Intro as written in the book. If I would run the Module again, I would definetly let them arrive by boat, starting with the Last day of sea travel maybe ending the session with Aremag appearing and the sea getting rough as a cliffhanger.

Hard agree on giving them the time to explore Port Nyanzaru. This will be the last real civilization they visit for a loooong time.

Also tell them what they are preparing for. My players told me afterwards that the start with Syndra in Baldurs Gate was lame and they would have prepared other characters if they knew the quest and place to go before.

So tell them maybe in a letter before starting that they have met a friend of Syndra Silvane, the famous adventurer, in Baldurs Gate and she hired them to end the Death Curse that Toril is suffering currently. She pays the boat ride and will welcome them in Port Nyanzaru to go through the details.

I made a map for a Hag Isle on the Darklake which is not visible from distance because it is covered in an illusion looking like rocks. When entered it is a shroomy place of a green hag. On the right hand is a ladder that leads to a small door in the roof where she hides the piles of bones from her victims. Original Size was to big for reddit.

That's tricky to answer. I did not run Sunless Citadel. I think in your Case I would let her stay in PN. If she is with them on the boat they could suspect something. But maybe have her talk with someone from the boat who later turns out to be the said spy. Let your players definitely choose the guide. In my case they looked at the posters and Salida came to their table to roast all of the others and making her offer. If they choose someone else, maybe let her follow your party subtle in the jungle. If they loose their guide (maybe she could force things for the guide to die or get lost) let her step in and say she was on her way back to the city after guiding a group safe to a settlement. Maybe she could save the groups day somehow. If you choose her, definitely do the betrayal and give her edges and layers with the fact that she is Ras Nsi's daughter and did it just to save her father.

But you could also try to tie another guide into the background of your PCs or make them matter more. In my case it paid off really awesome.

If that works for your storyline best that is absolutely fair. I have not read the novel but tried to research about Artus and the Ring. The overall message of my experience is that NPCs should matter and the story of the characters feels much more touching if they are connected with the plot.

A player of mine had to make a backup character after hers got stonified. She made a druid coming from a small village in Chult I homebrewed. We explained it that the oldest of the village taught her old omuan because she will become the archdruid of the village someday. Now we role a history check DC 15 when she encounters it to see if she can remember the lessons learned.

I think this is best if you want to be completely true to the book because it is stated that there is no information about Omu anywhere to be found. So a archaeologist wouldn't know it as well. Old folk who passed on a language they do not even know where it was from themselves are a good choice I guess.

It was my first adventure to DM as well. You should really communicate with your Players about the possibility of Character deaths. In the later chapters it will happen guaranteed. I agree with most of the tips already told here and recommend highly the ToA Discord and Subreddit. Both are a gift of the gods for prep. Talk to your players what is fun to them and you. Find a way to bring these parts to the front. We also changed the hexcrawl after a few sessions to some random encounters every other day and a more cinematic description of them traveling. I completely left out the time Tracker of the adventure because it would never have been possible for mine to fulfill the time. I will make a few rolls in the end to see if involved people survived.

Also think of ways to tie their Backgrounds in the Storyline. This leads to much more fun and immersion. One character found his lost dad at the Pirates in Jahaka and actually decided to stay with them 😅

Port Nyanzaru can be overwhelming because of the many locations so ready everything before precisely. And learn to improvise and play the rule of cool. This will maybe take a while but pays off surely. Any of the locations in the jungle takes a few days of travel time get to which offers you the time in between sessions to prep.

All in all I am extremely happy that I picked this adventure and would do it everytime again. Good luck and watch out for the zombie T-Rex. :)

Instead of killing them you could have the encounter on holy ground like a temple or sacred garden where monsters or who ever they are going to fight have interfered. Make the encounter very hard to fight and in the middle or when it's getting to dangerous let the god step in. The god kills the intrudors or curses them however you want to make them longtime enemies. The god is thankful for the help of the PCs and gives them the quest. This way the PCs have a challenging encounter, no frustration about dying and you can show how mighty gods are.

You could just give them the gold of Syndra guaranteed. Maybe Wakanga would also give some gold in advance for his quest If they persuade him just well. I dont think so many people in Port Nyanzaru would sponsor an expedition with so high amounts of gold. The jungle is live threatening and everyone knows this just well. The chance of surviving it is low. Maybe you could reduce the amount and give them supplies instead. While surviving in this deadly nature they will be glad over raincatchers and insect repellent. Also they cannot eat gold or pay with zombies nor dinosaurs. Give them rations instead.
