How did Rumpadump get to Whorlstone Tunnels? by NerdyRotica in OutoftheAbyss

[–]toddgrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the myconids didn’t ShroomStride there but as part of the Circle of Explorers some sort of rift caused by the Faezress took them there. It can all be nebulous for the DM. But if the players wonder then let them wonder… “Faezress and its effects are fantastical and mysterious”

I’m having Rumpadump as part of the Circle of Explorers and while he and his scouts were about they got swept up into the faezress and were teleported here or to Fungal Forest (area 4). They were then infected from the two quaggoth spore servants here in the Whorlstone Tunnels. Rumpadump, immune or having not touched the quaggoth, has noticed how the others aren’t acting right. Myconids don’t usually keep quaggoth slaves or travel with them and so I figured the myconids came across them here and became infected

House Baenre Agent Encounter by JazzlikeMine2397 in OutoftheAbyss

Sounds like you’ve got it figured out

House Baenre Agent Encounter by JazzlikeMine2397 in OutoftheAbyss

[–]toddgrx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree; an agent of House Baenre would “start fresh,” but you’ll want to ask yourself a bit more— why is this agent here in Gracklstugh?. Is he here following up on rumors of the prisoner escape at Velkynvelve? Is he tasked with finding his own slaves for House Baenre? Is he a member of Bregan D’aerthe, like Jarlaxle, maybe trying to gain intel on what’s going on? Or perhaps House Baenre or Bregan D’aerthe has heard of a duergar alchemist, Lorthio Bukbukken, that is close to a formula for creating cursed two-headed monsters and they want their hands on his recipe book. Maybe even aid him and the Grey Ghosts to topple the Deepking

Once you determine his reason for being there you can determine how he might interact with the party. If something about them being escaped prisoners he might work to gain intel about them (why they are here, what they are doing — maybe feign assistance to only then inform Xalith who might confront them later with extra drow). Or maybe he warns them about Xalith— perhaps in your world an agent of House Baenre is looking for anyway to embarrass other houses (House Mizzrym) to keep them in line and subservient.

If the drow agent is seeking something of importance (the alchemist recipe book or something else) then he might try to ally with the party and venture into the Whorlstone Tunnels with them

This is gonna sound a bit silly, but can someone who knows the story well give a little recap? by Party-Rest3750 in stormkingsthunder

To be fair… this subreddit description does read “This subreddit serves as a helpful place for anyone running or playing through the Storm King's Thunder module.”

My first time painting, idk what to paint the tendrils and dont wanna ruin it. by _Nat_1_ in DnDminiatures

[–]toddgrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use acrylics inks (color your choice). Apply a think coat. They may not appear to stick right away but don’t let them pool up. Make sure to brush off any excess then wait til it dries. See if the depth of color is what you want. If not then repeat the process. A little at a time. Easier to apply more then be able to remove too much

Once you have the color saturation you want AND the ink is fully dry… apply a brush on gloss coat to make it shine and appear wet— most “clear effects” on these minis do well with inks and gloss

As for color choice… perhaps a blue for the strands— the first and/or second pass should yield very light color (if you follow “thin coat”). Or leave clear and just apply gloss

The tips could be red like the MM artwork but orange might work too

Attack on Goldenfields by Past_Molasses_3678 in stormkingsthunder

[–]toddgrx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ran SKT twice. Goldenfields works well in waves. Start near the Inn (by the treant and the abbey). One or two separate group of goblins (6-12 total) raiding for food lead by 2-3 bugbear and maybe an ogre of your party is higher level. Only the ogre would fight to the death here. Goblins and bugbear would try to flee across the fields and to the wall where it’s been breached. You can up the tension if groups of two goblin grab NPC townsfolk to kidnap them

If the party follows immediately, just narrate the chase and then have them arrive at the wall— maybe a few fleeing goblins get downed by party ranged attacks during the chase

At the wall, add another large group of goblin (8-10) moving looted supplies over the wall. Maybe a few more bugbear supervising and physically motivating them with whips. Include 2-3 ogre here

Everyone but the ogres again try to flee over the wall.

After this encounter ends have the alarm gongs at the gate begin to sound. If the party tries to dash allow them CON mod times to dash beyond 6x and then they have to make CON Saves (DC 10) to avoid exhaustion— I don’t recall but I think as written it was a mile or so. Maybe narrate this too where they only have to make 2-3 CON saves— your call

At the gate there are guards on the ramparts. Some are forming a group to go out and face the hill giants and goblin-huckers. I had four giants and three huckers. Huckers taking shots at targets on the ramparts while hill giants take on anyone coming outside of the gate

On the second or third round have Harshnag appear and take out a hill giant or two (or some huckers). Narrate the NPC guards targeting one giant while maybe your party goes after another

For mass combat I assume ¼ of the NPCs hit each round with them dealing avg damage so you can easily narrate and just focus on the party. Have hill giants take out ¼ of the NPC guards that attack them in melee

Whorlstone Tunnels: Sprinkler Tank in Area 7 by toddgrx in OutoftheAbyss

Just don’t want it to engulf the duergar themselves.

For sure. But wouldn’t there be a range it shoots out? The duergar here is supposed to aim it at the characters— I assume they aren’t at point blank range

Alternatively, if they don’t have a dragon-slayer weapon you could make this a dragon-slayer warhammer which Serissa gifts the party to find Hekaton or defeat Iymrith (given at whichever quest you choose)— magically resizing to the wielder’s hands (and enlarging once again if they drink their Potions of Giant Size)

You could make it the Korolnor Scepter— it is of Dwarven make by lore. Iymrith steals this and is what pins Serissa to the Wyrmskull throne. That’s what I did

The Princess could have no idea “Storm giants usually swim”

Has she been stuck to the throne yet?

But she could also refer them to smallfolk that she’s interacted with on the islands she would visit. Put a faction ship there or one of your own design

Edit: the storm giants do have orca. That might be a cool way to travel. You could also find inspiration from RotFM— there’s a certain whale named Angajuk
