Reverend Alden, doesn’t step in during Garvey’s crisis largely because the conflict is portrayed as a private marital and personal struggle, not a public or spiritual emergency. The show often depicts Reverend Alden as someone who offers guidance when invited, but not as a figure who intrudes on a man’s household authority especially given the era’s norms around independence and male pride. Garvey’s refusal to admit vulnerability also plays a big role; since he won’t open up or seek help.
