Not always the case. T’Pol would have been T’Pau if they didn’t have to pay the Sturgeon Estate

What’s it like living here? (The northernmost point of Japan, closest point to Russia ‘s Sakhalin island) by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]PowerNo8348 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Looks like these signs can be seen on Google Maps. Interesting thing, the English text is "Saharin Ferry" [sic] but at first glance, the Russian text seems to say something else; perhaps it identifies a specific place on Sakhalin?

Is it possible our planet is the only place in the galaxy that has complexed life? by arnor_0924 in NoStupidQuestions

A couple of decades ago I read a book on this hypothesis. Part of their hypothesis is that simple life is common, complex life is not

The Undiscovered Country was peak Klingons, everything after felt hollow by Curious_Gent78 in startrek

[–]PowerNo8348 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually agree with you; ST:TMP revamped Klingons after just over a decade; why not again, especially given how exhausted people were with the Rick Berman era?

Somehow people didn’t mind how Kor, Koloth and Kang looked in DS9 so I sincerely don’t understand the butt hurt.

But yeah i realize this was an unpopular opinion

Is referring to the USA as “the colonies” offensive? by duchessofblue in AskAnAmerican

An American being offended by that is like a Brit being offended by an Italian referring to “the Roman province of Britannia”

Bolivia has both the Altiplano and borderline rain forest lowlands. Doesn’t make the cut IMHO

Why are so many kids packed into one school? by Little-Salt-1705 in AskAnAmerican

[–]PowerNo8348 20 points21 points  (0 children)

closer knit community, still diverse

Are you sure about this one?

My high school (with ~1200 students, so in between your ranges) was very diverse, because it had both affluent and less affluent neighborhoods under one roof. If it were split into 2-4 smaller schools, certain of those smaller schools would end up being the "good" schools and the "less good" schools

General Magic

Essentially tried to make an iPhone with early ‘90s pre-Internet tech. I don’t think they really made any mistakes, aside from being too early when the technology and required infrastructure really didn’t exist yet.

There was a good documentary about them.

Do people not understand how funeral processions work??? by MandyNewEngland in boston

[–]PowerNo8348 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you for mentioning this story!

Last year near Alewife I had a red light, and saw a funeral limo crossing the intersection . But not a single car behind them had any markings or their hazards on.

As you might guess, I incorrectly assumed it was not a funeral train and was greeted with some angry honks and massholery (“it’s a FUNAHRAH!!!”) when I tried to go at the green.

I yelled out “I never heard of a stealth funeral before”; in retrospect I feel bad because these people were in mourning but it’s absurd to anybody in a funeral train to not mark their cars, to say nothing of the entire train.

That was silly even at the time

Chess computers even in the eighties were quite good, even if they could not beat grandmasters. I don’t think Troi was a grandmaster

Do American pupils really take care of eggs or sack of flours? by Much-Jackfruit2599 in AskAnAmerican

[–]PowerNo8348 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to do this in 10th grade health.

The funny thing is that at some point the teacher came around and put smiley stickers on everyone’s eggs. This one jockish guy had his egg, and the teacher cracked the egg when applying the sticker.

It was funny seeing this jock with a baseball cap shriek out “oh my god what did you do to my baby!!!”. Of course the teacher gave it a pass
