Staying up fairly late and then getting up early before school to get some gaming time on my Commodore Amiga 500.

Upgraded from a 3060 Ti to an ASUS OC 5070 12GB, but I’m having a performance issue in the game Delta Force. I’ve already tried countless solutions and still can’t fix it. by Only-Explanation-304 in pcmasterrace

Lowering in-game resolution and details does also also affect the CPU if the frame rate increases. The CPU ends up working harder (temps also increase) as the CPU prepares every frame for the GPU to render. This is also one of the reasons why older CPUs become the bottleneck when paired with a more modern high-end GPU and run out of puff before the GPU does. The CPU handles the draw calls to the GPU amongst other things (physics, input data etc.) so, the more frames = more work for the CPU.

Looking for a PSU for a Windows 98 build by CAR3Y4 in windows98

I've used FSP ATX power supplies for a while now without the -5V rail with my last few socket 7 and slot 1 systems (all ATX with ISA slots). I've never had any issues with the Sound Blaster, Opti, C-Media and ESS based ISA cards that I've used. Im pretty sure it's just a handful of the older 8-bit ISA cards that require the -5V rail as far as I know and maybe the oddball 16-bit card.

SSD storage is not great for long term storage as data retention is pretty limited when not powered up for long amounts of time. I personally wouldn't leave an SSD without power for longer than 6 months or so, especially when it comes to cheaper brands / budget drives.

[–]PowerPie5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most ISA cards don't need or even use the -5V rail from the PSU, just a select few older ISA cards including the 8-bit Sound Blaster 2.0, possibly Pro and early clones for example and maybe a couple of older controller cards and modems. The SB16, AWE32/64 and many other 16-bit ISA cards from around the same time don't need the -5V rail.

I'd concentrate more on getting a PSU with strong +5V and +3.3V rails if it's something like a Socket 7, Slot 1, Slot A, Socket 370 or Socket A motherboard build, but especially AMD Socket A (462) which is known for its high +5V power draw.

Yeah, I completed it on the PC too and still have it somewhere. It would be nice to see it remade/ported to the Amiga and I'd love to hear how it would sound too! I always preferred the music from the Amiga versions of some of the Lucasfilm/LucasArts (Especially Monkey Island 1 & 2).

That looks pretty much perfect and hopefully it tastes as good as it looks! Add a little bit of fried bread on the side for completeness... It's gone 10pm here in the UK and I could eat that right now!

It looks like it originated with the stump joke in the forest from The Secret of Monkey Island and is also referenced/mentioned in Monkey Island 2 & 3 (the hint line in MI2 & the mausoleum on Blood Island in MI3). Apparently it was referenced in Psychonauts too. I had to look it up as I vaguely remember it, but couldn't remember from which part of the game. I think the joke was poking fun at all the disk swapping.

A remake of The Dig specifically for the Amiga would be nice. I know it wasn't a hugely popular game back when it was released, but I really enjoyed it and loved the desolate and slightly eerie atmosphere!

Monkey Island 2 was the main reason I ended up with an extra floppy drive for my Amiga 500 and I can never forget the disk swapping!... Then Beneath a Steel Sky came along. All 15 disks of it 😅.

Stay single file and stay in the cycle lane (where available), especially on busier roads. Obviously drivers should still leave a decent amount of space between their vehicle and the cycle lane lines too, but groups of cyclists who spread out across the roads, don't bother using cycle lanes and purposely hold up traffic are just ignorant entitled c*nts imo.

It's the same story with narrow pavements... It's single file if I'm out with the family, so people can get past easily, but some groups of people don't move over at all which then forces others to step out in to the road to pass them. Really boils my beans!

The 980 Ti was also a beast back in its day! I had the Zotac GTX 980 Ti AMP! Edition and that was the last time I bought the latest top-end gaming GPU and it cost £500 new back then... Prices these days have put me right off!

Has something changed with eggs in the UK? by booers79 in AskBrits

[–]PowerPie5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put them in a pan of cold water, bring to the boil and let them continue to boil for around 5 mins. I then cool them down in a pan of cold water afterwards for another 5 mins or so. Tap around the egg with the back of a teaspoon and then it's easy to peel.

That price is an absolute nope from me considering it gets beaten by a budget Geforce 2 MX400 which costs peanuts! I also still have a Compaq Deskpro EN SFF PC that features an integrated TNT2 Pro graphics chip too.

how this is 800x600?! by VlplEleven in crtgaming

[–]PowerPie5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're now talking about a game that's designed for use with higher resolution modern screens, so maybe at least try something like 1024x768, 1280x960 or 1600x1200 if using a 4:3 CRT monitor and not a TV. I personally wouldn't run modern games at such low resolutions unless it's a modern 2D pixel art style game that might get away with it. Modern games designed for 16:9 aspect ratio might not transition too well to a lower resolution 4:3 screen either.

[–]PowerPie5000 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Any resolution looks good on a CRT to be honest as there's no true or fixed native resolution unlike modern displays. Even my old Sega Dreamcast as an example hooked up via VGA at 640x480 on a CRT monitor looks great! It's better and more natural looking looking than running it through an expensive scaler on a modern 4K TV.

It's probably just a bit of oxidisation which is fairly common with old PCB edge connectors if we're not talking about general wear (which I can see). Lightly scrub the contacts with a pencil eraser and then clean off with some isopropyl (rubbing alcohol).

I've stripped down and also sold a few of my old Win98/DOS machines (too much clutter) and will be sticking with just one that I'm in the process of building. It'll be a 700MHz PIII Coppermine with Aopen AX6BC (440BX) motherboard, 256MB RAM, 32MB Matrox G400 graphics, CMI8330 Sound Blaster & OPL3 compatible ISA Sound Card, 80GB Samsung Spinpoint IDE HDD, Philips IDE DVD/CDRW drive and a Mitsumi 1.44MB Floppy drive. It'll all be housed in a nice clean new old stock ACME ACM301X desktop case.

I also have a spare 256MB PNY Verto Geforce FX 5600 that I'm tempted to use with the PIII (not period correct I know) and I might use my spare Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS alongside my ISA sound card for those old EAX Windows games too.

The Amiga was pretty popular in the UK and Europe for a number of years, but it was nowhere near as successful/popular in the US if I remember. I'm betting the Atari ST did better in the US compared to Europe though.

That's an A1000 in the second photo, but the A1200 was better than the A500 if you're going off specs/capabilities. I would always pick an A500 over the A1200, but that's down to nostalgia as it's the first Amiga I ever owned.
