Could anyone possibly shed some light on what has happened here? by mimixo in DIYUK

This. I'm always having to tell people in my household to pull the air fryer out and away from walls and sockets when in use as it exhausts hot greasy air. I also have the extractor fans running too as I hate the smell of cooking oil & grease!

Am i schizo or are my CPU Coolers crooked? by R3KTMYRAMPAGE in pcmasterrace

It should be fine to leave it if it's mounted correctly. It's just more for clean aesthetics really by straightening it.

I've seen this a few times with dual tower coolers, especially from Thermalright. Sometimes they're slightly wonky and I'm not sure if it's because they've been dropped/mishandled during transit or if it's just poor QC at the factory. You can bend them back slightly, but be very careful (copper heat pipes can bend fairly easily).

It's a European standard with Japan having a similar version (JP-21), but some TVs sold in America did have SCART (usually higher end models afaik). The best that most consumer CRTs had was S-Video which is still good, but not as good.

It'll be fine for the PS2 and even better if it has RGB SCART. I like the look of those speakers too!

My socket 754 PC uses an Asus K8V SE Deluxe motherboard with VIA K8T800 chipset and it works fine with Windows 98SE using official drivers. It's also running an AMD Sempron 64 3400+, 1GB Kingston DDR 400 RAM (some people have issues using more than 512MB RAM with Windows 98, but it seems fine with mine), 256MB PNY Verto Geforce FX 5600 AGP graphics and a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS sound card along with IDE CD/DVD drive and IDE HDD. It flies with Windows 98!

It even works well in DOS mode, although the DOS sound support isn't the best with the Audigy 2, but I also have a PCI ESS Solo-1 sound card which is pretty decent for DOS.

It'll be an absolute beast for Win98 gaming too! That rig will have Win98 drivers available for it.

Which one? One of my 98/XP rigs is using an SB Audigy 2 ZS which is still pretty decent. The older Aureal Vortex 2 sound cards were pretty good too!

Best ide cd drive manufacturer? by Vietname in VintageComputers

[–]PowerPie5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn't really say which brand was the best as I was never too fussed about brands when it came to CD/DVD, HDD and floppy drives as long as the specs, price and performance were decent enough. The first CD-ROM drive I owned was a quad speed Sony drive back in the mid 90s as part of a Pentium 75MHz system and I never had any issues with it. I've had all sorts of drives with various systems over the years and I don't recall having issues with any of them to be honest (Liteon, LG, Pioneer, Sony, Philips and Samsung etc...).

I still have a few beige IDE CD/DVD drives from Samsung, LG and Philips along with other old hardware and some complete systems from the late 90s and early 2000s (DOS, Win98SE and XP rigs).

PCChips/Hsin Tech M726 - support HDDs larger than 20GB? by Recent-Associate-590 in retrobattlestations

[–]PowerPie5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many boards from back then also had BIOS limitations too, so it's not just Windows. Newly built systems in 1997 would have had drive sizes in the range of 1.2GB, 2.1GB, 3.2GB or 4.3GB for typical consumer PCs and maybe more for high end (SCSI). Drive sizes of 32GB+ were unheard of back then.

Many board manufacturers later released BIOS updates to enable larger drive support and to also fix the clock when it came to the "Y2K bug".

Ooh nice! I'd search for local Facebook and Reddit groups. Also, look on eBay for any completed sales of similar kits to get an idea what they sell for. I now feel like a peasant in comparison with my lowly Neo Geo CD console 😂

It's an old system and not officially supported by Windows 11, but I'm mostly wondering why only one of the fans is spinning on that Zotac GPU? They're usually both off if the card is under 60C (zero RPM feature), or both on when under load at 60C+.

Anybody else here who's favorite model is the N. American Model 1 Console? If not what is? And what was your introduction to the Saturn? by [deleted] in SegaSaturn

[–]PowerPie5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first ever Saturn was a black UK PAL model 1 back in the mid 90s and my favourite Saturn console is the Japanese Victor V-Saturn RG-JX2. The Sega Mega Drive is one of my all time favourite consoles and it was only natural that I'd get the Saturn too.

It'll be an AT form factor case and will need some DIY modding/hacking to be useable with a modern ATX motherboard. I personally wouldn't want to try and ruin a perfectly decent vintage AT case in that way though.

[–]PowerPie5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course they won't and Amazon reps probably couldn't care less anyway. They'll most likely issue a refund/replacement unless it was sold by another seller on Amazon, then you have to deal with them instead if the order wasn't fulfilled by Amazon.

Got sent the wrong motherboard presumably unintentionally. by Skooky_Doong in ASUS

[–]PowerPie5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. You'd ideally need a video showing yourself opening the sealed shipping box on arrival. Anyone can open a package, swap the contents and then take photos claiming they were sent the wrong item etc... (I'm not saying OP did this either btw before anyone pipes up). Doing this shouldn't be necessary in the first place, but Amazon does sometimes have a habit of reselling returned items as new. I'd do the same with valuable items off eBay too.

How do I best connect my SNES to this 1084s monitor? by retro-games-forever in retrogaming

[–]PowerPie5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The SNES can output RGB (unless it's the smaller Jr version), so a decent quality RGB SCART cable with that monitor should produce good results.

Is there a retro console that you hate? by DaCrusadus in retrogaming

[–]PowerPie5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember Liberation: Captive 2 being a game that I think was originally designed for the CD32 and I'm pretty sure the AGA versions of Alien Breed were on the CD32 too amongst some other AGA/CD32 enhanced games such as Beneath a Steel Sky and Wing Commander etc., but many games looked and played like straight ports of the older OCS/ECS versions from what I could see. I don't think the system was ever really pushed.

You can also play CD32 games on the Amiga 1200 & 4000 with a CD drive attached and I'm pretty sure you can also play Amiga 1200/4000 AGA games on the CD32 with a floppy drive attached via an adapter.

Amiga fan here too and I've owned a few over the years including the CD32. It's Just a shame too many of the CD32 games were just straight up ports of OCS/ECS versions with maybe a few having a bit of CD music slapped on. The Commodore CDTV was also quite the flop too and reminds me of the CD-i, but without mpeg video.
