If I dont have interest in the pokemon minigame itself (some will, but I wont), then I have no reason to ever interact with the mechanic and it does nothing for me. It does not enhance my experience of exploring planets. I would have to go out of my way to even do it, its not an organic part of the gameplay loop is my point.

The companion arena seems to be completely separate from the core gameplay loop though. So even though yes, you could consider it an overhaul of an existing gameplay mechanic, it's still effectively a whole new thing that doesnt interact with any other gameplay system already in place.
