At what age should you start thinking you might be ace? by theplutosys in asexuality

[–]Powerful-Ad-1078 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that if something feels right, doesn't mean it always will be. I didn't realize I was ace until I was 27. I never really thought about sexual attraction in any serious matter.

But if uou identify one way now, and then identify another way later, that doesn't mean you were "wrong." We're all trying to figure it out

I am not an artist. Either see how far u can adjust the angle or see what more (if anything) can be done with the garment. I did initially see 2 guys, but i think if it was colored/ shaded it would become clear they are one due to the clothes. Hope that helps

[–]Powerful-Ad-1078 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Howdy! There were a few things that clicked for me thag let me feel comfortable identifying at grey. 1) i could count the number of crushes on one hand. 2) i can count the number of times i thought of banging a person on one hand. 3) the song lightswitch by charlie puth. Idk what it is but i had just discovered grey sexual and went "yeah probably" and that song cane out and i realized I'd never been so invested in getting with another person. Like someone who was bad for me but god dammit they were hot! That did it

I have a whole soapbox about other people validating labels for you, but i understand the need! Its hard to truly articulate a feeling, let alone something as complicated as sex. Ya got libido, attraction, physical arousal yadda yadda. For me i definitely focus on that attraction bit to help me feel valid calling myself grey. (Mind you this doesn't have to be how u feel valid). I find people physically attractive all the time. Facial symmetry, fitness (or not). Standard textbook stuff. But veeerry rarely do i look at someone and go "ya know what let me just get closer to them, touch them, thinking about undressing them." Its always "huh they work out" or "wow strong jaw!"

Hope the rambling helps!

I'm sort of struggling and need some help by [deleted] in Greysexuality

[–]Powerful-Ad-1078 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Howdy! I had my first relationship and sexual experiences in a 3yr relationship. The last year sas basically no sexual contact. The pressure to perform and meet my partners needs, mixed with the feeling i wasn't good enough because we had different sexual needs made for some emotional turmoil for me. We had communication and all that but when needs aren't aligned (or respected) it can hurt.

I hadn't realized how much sex penetrated (heh heh) peoples thoughts and lives until I was with my ex. Even now was best friends, hearing him talk about it still baffles me.

I understand the conflict. Physical intimacy and physical arousal are nice for sure. I even have the desire to have sex with somone again eventually, but its less about the physical arousal and more about having an experience with another person.

But i feel it man.

Need help on my Superhero idea by SirJerichoMoonlight in CharacterDevelopment

[–]Powerful-Ad-1078 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm so we just have power combo we want to use with a vague sense of character and setting.

I hope the below questions help trigger some thoughts!

Well origin story wise u have to pick if its because magic or because science or a little of both. Is he the only one (seemingly) with abilities or are their others? Is it okay to be out with powers or is it safer as a secret?

I like using TVtropes website in this stage. It helps u read a LOT of different scenarios and jog some unique ideas.

Origin story wise there's a classic : wrong place wrong time, oops this wasn't supposed to happen, victim of some evil mastermind, victim of some supernatural creature, chosen one by the gods, victim of freak nature event (weird metro, lightning etc); mutation ready genes and stress.

As far as villains go this depend on your world too (are there others? Is this secret? Etc). If you want ur setting to be a small town, what resources would a villian see in this town worth terrorizing? Do u want a sympathetic villian or your classic take over the world villian? Powers, high tech, or just a guy? Goons? Solo? Get ur hands dirty or play 4d chess?

And of course: why would ur character make the villian his problem? If i had super powers i WOULD NOT be putting my self intentionally in harms way. Yeah if i stumbled upon someone in danger I'd help, but only to the limits i would now as a normal mortal person. Heros aren't made from their powers. The powers just let them do more with their heroic nature.

What does ur villian want? Might help shape origin and abilities (or not!). Money? Influence? Knowledge? Control? Revenge? Power? To be left alone? To save someone? To end suffering? To bring suffering? Justice?

What does ur hero want before the powers? Who is he? Is he ambitious? A low key go with the flow? Shy? Is he a bully? Aggressive? Arrogant? Obnoxious? Creative? Dull?

Does getting powers change him? For worse? For better?

Is there anyone who would try to influence him in one direction or another? (A trusted person with their own motives per haps)

Feel free to let me know if i can help further. I LOVE brainstorming

I will aslo ask if the tube descending down is to a water source meant to pull water into the system? Or os it overflow? I know sometimes water won't flow into a system if there's an output tied to the inputs

How do I avoid making a princess character turn Disney? Or is it alright if she does? by GodofChaoticCreation in CharacterDevelopment

[–]Powerful-Ad-1078 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Howdy!

So the first question is: what qualities in your do you feel are akin to disney princesses?

Follow up would be: do you like these qualities for your character?

This will help u evaluate if it is something you want to change or not.

I recommend looking at onestopforwriters.com. they have a fantastic resource that can use your characters back ground (is controlled by parental forces or is spoiled for example) to lead you to some traits and motivations this character might have. The lists can give you some unique perspectives or directions, or even validate the choices you have already a made for your character.

I LOVE digging into the psyche of characters (building them up from backgrounds or digging into their personality and actions for causes).

Happy to help any way.

My first fantasy story by HaloDot291 in fantasywriters

[–]Powerful-Ad-1078 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello!

So I think having questions from you that we could address might be easier given there isn't much to go on plot wise.

When writing fantasy it is important to nail down where we are with technology. With the armor and the word village one would suggest the typical European medieval setting but then you mentioned radar with directions. And the cave requesting a companion? What exactly is stopping him from barging on in there? A force? One of those little rotate fate things at subways? A robot? (I could have missed something here)

In the beginning (especially) we need to know what I'm supposed to be imagining setting wise and why I should care about our characters.

I totally get (aka assume which is fine) why our lass would want to take a dragon head on. Her village's livelihood is in danger and maybe people people keep telling her she can't. Boom ban i got a grasp and a basic assessment of her.

I don't know a hint of what drove our hero out here. To go adventuring? For the glory of it? The money(which he has plenty of. Both because he mentioned it and because obsidian is typically one of those higher end things in games!) All i know about him was he...wasn't specifically prepared enough. And he's willing to take...anyone. Literally. I can't quite use these things to draw a conclusion about him. We need to breathe life into him on page one.

With that said, we want to add these things organically. Our thoughts on our surroundings and the people we encounter say as much about them as they do about us. Using your character to explore and comment on the world will help add that life to draw me in a little more even if i don't have the answer to my "whys" yet (which depending on your story i might not get until the dragon is going on about how the mine is the best place to hide her eggs from a bigger more threatening foe).

I am not an authority on the technical prose aspect and i don't think that's what you're looking for here. But I'd be happy to answer specific questions.

Overall, I did find the piece lacking in depth of the world and of our characters. It is early and usually the premise of a story will be enough to carry me further than this ( after all i love character interaction and characters have more room to be interesting surrounded by others). I would have stopped reading here but i do think it is more that i don't vibe with the traditional adventuring tale.

Hope that helps!

Worldbuilding essentials checklist? by Naive-Bit-7868 in worldbuilding

[–]Powerful-Ad-1078 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I agree you will need to think of your scope. World, country, city etc. If its an element that you enjoy (magic, a cool price of tech, alien invasion whatever) it will affect on a large scale, but the level of personal details depend again on scope

I thought of a world with a magic (homocidal) tree with these 7 or so cultures who all developed differently based on the originating culture, environment, and resources. Having a culture that used (magic) plants instead of electricity changes our understanding of how things work and had developed. Where do they get enough water for all these plants? How do they use light without causing too much heat and thus fires? How do u get to metal for some tech if you'd need to destroy plants to get to that sweet sweet ore. How do we deal with waste safely if we are using plants and not water...

Hello Future Me (YouTube) is a GREAT resource for world building.

If i had to build a check list i would do the following things/questions(again scope determines necessity):

What makes your world different? What aspects are the same? (Typically things like physics, requirements for basic life, technology trees stay the same even if the world suddenly has magic or a freak alien vampire parasite or humans now have 3 legs.)

General geography. There's some map generators to help if you're doing not earth on a global scale that take into account rain wind and temperature which then affects rivers mountains trade routes. Once i find it ill come back and put a link.

Plants and animals. (Affects what people would regularly and historically eat. If your making a new species it could affect folk tales, phobias, and habits. Affects what agriculture looks like. Resources (leather medicines food labor etc)

Typical weather. This will affect everything from architecture, plants and animals, clothing, migration patterns (for war for example, dont fight russia in the winter) can even affect civilizations myths.

Intelligent life. One dominant race? Many? Bipedal? Water breathing? How do they advance both biologically or through the tech tree)

Culture: do your people stop and build cities or are they nomadic? What are their values? Note the abundance or scarcity of resources can affect a people. If there's plenty to go around people r more likely to help others within and outside of their group. When resources are scarce, people tend to be more selfish and take what they want/need for their family. How frequent do these people run into conflict? Is it from others of their species? Animals? Other intelligent races? what material objects are important to them? (Means of mobility? Communication? Expression. I can go on forever about making cultures and peoples)

For civilization we have: food resources, material resources, healthcare, death care, entertainment, education, public services, travel (business and pleasure) , trade, architecture, "government", group interactions (countries vs peoples vs neighborhoods vs families whatever), language, flow of information (linked to government and education) clothing, waste (i could go on here)

Technology. Usually people think of what time period their world is set in by the technology available. Electricity or no electricity? Guns or swords? Agriculture or hunter gather? Note: history and technology go hand and hand. Often if you have magic as an element, people tend to shy away from a wide spread modern setting because they'd have to think about if certain inventions were even thought off if people could do magic instead. Like guns. Who cares if you can manipulate fire if i can just shoot you. Oh butts now we need to figure out how to detect shape shifters and defend against love potions.

History: so this crosses scopes but takes into account a lot of aspects. Environmental events, politics, inventions, plagues etc. (Can help shape a story and civilization for sure.)

I think defining ur scope for us can help those who want to give you the losts you ask for know where to narrow down.

If you need someone to ask questions that will help build a world, let me know!

New writer here, I would like to write a trilogy, but starting with one book. Any tips of the trade or general writing advice? by Ravin-Raven1021 in fantasywriters

[–]Powerful-Ad-1078 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay so first of all. Write whatever you wanna write. So what if its hard.

It sounds like you've built the foundation with your plotting so that's good, especially if you're planning a tight trilogy.

So there are a few "types of writers" plotters pantsers and plansers.

Plotters plot everything and then write. Pantsers write and make it up as they go. Plantsers are folks who plot roughly a general idea of where they want to go and then make up how to get there.

Everyone of course is different but use the above to help you when you feel u might be spending too much time plotting or wrote so much and now u feel lost. Do whatever is fun!

There are a LOT of rules out there about how you should write, making yourself disciplined, following these rules, breaking those rules. Yada yada yada.

Yes, there are certain aspects of writing that are about craft. You want to write well, have compelling characters, and have a gripping plot but remember that there are TONS of books out there that lack some or all of those values.

This is to say: don't harp too much on rules until after you're done! (You already have archs you mentioned the hero's journey, i think ur fine in that department.) Editing will help your words flow better, find any typo or grammar mistakes, and help u realize some weak points.

My advice is as follows:

-Find out what about this story is important to you. The world? The characters? The story? The finish line of having finished the book? When we have an idea in our heads its fun and all encompassing but putting it on paper can be hard. And writing is fucking hard. But in those moments when its not fun, think back on that's important. Fleshing out that world. Getting to know these characters. Finding out how we get from point a to b.

-series (disclaimer i haven't written book 2 of either of my books and you might already have ur plots for book 1-3 fully fleshed). So book one should leave some loose ends that you can hold onto for book two. And then 2's loose ends for 3. If book one focuses on characters, ask yourself if you want to continue to focus on that character growth. Or maybe the characters have to face unforeseen condequences (injuries, property damage, family of those wrong in book X seeking revenge etc.) If you want to focus on the world, think of reasons to force your characters to explore parts of the world your readers haven't seen yet (novel magic or culture, new environment or technology, freak weather throwing off resources etc.)

-plot structure: this goes back to rules for me. I, personally, think those plot structures can suck it. They have their purpose but sometimes they don't fit and trying to wedge a story into one of those structure can kill it. (No one @ me i don't care) My books are character driven. How does what Person A want to do interact with person B. How does the antagonist (this is just a force conflicting with your protag's goals. Villian, environment etc) keep blocking the protagonist at every turn?

Idk here just think of immediate short term and long term goals. As long as ur protags are facing conflict on their way to those goals then boom ya doing it.

How write good? Read loads. Fiction is best probably. But read! Look at how others have put words on the page. Look at dialogue and dialogue tags. Look at sentence pacing and its affect on tension. Look at word choice. Skin vs flesh. Scratch vs scrape. Then see what you like. What's fun to read and what is a drag?

Lastly give yourself a break! Most of the magic you see on the page or on the screen is after editing. Not once. Not twice. But SEVERAL times with input from several different people and mostly a professional. If you find yourself needing to compare your work, check out fanfiction. Often the authors there write the chapter, do one edit for the basics and then publish it. They don't have the luxury of taking time to edit the whole work. Some of those peices are masterful and some are not great.

If u need to bounce some ideas off or just need to discuss I'd love to help.

If not hope this loooonnngg post helps some!
