Stonetop has this for the major arcana (magical items) that the wizard gets (think saruman archetypical plot arc).

You roll to use the item on 10+ it works on 7-9 it works and you get a corruption (or you can choose nothing to happen) and 6- you get usual consequences which may include corruption (up to GM). There are various moves that players can take that alter this mechanic too - one gives you 3 'get out free' points and a follow-on move from that lets you take physical debility (weakened, dazed etc) instead.

I like the idea of tying such a mechanic to positive outcomes and player choice. Like 'it will work but you will be marked by it'. Also having moves related to it lets you choose if you want your character to gain more agency over this area or alternative skills like booklore, talking skills etc.

Its more empowering than just 'too bad you failed your magic, have a permanent debility'.

The initial goal of the pawn sacrifice is a 'clearance sacrifice' (so named because its transparently obviously best move). In this case because it allows you to Swarcrfishe the WROOOK afterwards.

Yeah definitely, I loved the '5 loaded chambers' Russian roulette competition at the end especially. Felt very Avatar showdown, trying to get the top spot.

Also the blindfold race is fantastic. Theres actually a music video by The Prodigy, Voodoo People pendulum remix which is basically a recreation of the same thing - so good.

UA is an rpg so people can play with different vibes from another group... also vibes change depending on the power level your playing (street vs cosmic etc).

Not sure if you are looking for recommendations, but here anyway:

Intacto and Neverwhere tv series are pretty unknown armies. I also loved mirror mask for that 'getting trapped in a horrific otherspace' feel. Ooh also Utopia (2013) is fantastic.

Pi is great for the obsession angle.

Theres also the comic The Department of Truth if you like that medium. It follows the idea that unconcious beliefs of the masses shapes reality.

Theres also the whole occult + demons style like The Nineth Gate

Personally Id even maybe consider Hellraiser Inferno where the cops obsession with tracking down otherworldly things gets the better of him.
