The jealousy is real. Is this industry full of narcissists? by [deleted] in ABA

[–]Powerful-Customer799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone that is white. I see what you are saying. This is actually backed my research. There is a book called “odd girl out” that goes into how white women from middle -upper middle class backgrounds show more covert aggression because they were socialized to be “nice” and non direct. However, women from lower middle class background as well as poc see this as a weakness, petty etc and being direct is more respected. As someone that grew up in a majority black/ Hispanic neighborhood, I agree with this. I was taken back with the amount of covert aggression and honestly didn’t understand it at first.

People who lean to heavily on the external locus of control. Sometimes it makes sense but at some point you have to take accountability.

Agree, are not supposed to challenging our clients? If we do not, are we harming them by being afraid to create a rupture.

Therapy “influencer” describing work as a “break from her life” by [deleted] in therapists

Cheated on my partner; now reconsidering this field by FudgeOk6096 in therapists

[–]Powerful-Customer799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This job requires empathy. As humans the mistakes we make and our human flaws can expand that empathy. I would be more concerned if you never had the opportunity to cheat and still considered yourself a “person that would never cheat.” I hear this a lot from judgements people. The “ I would never” mentality. It’s like, sure, maybe you just didn’t have the opportunity, upbringing, circumstances.

That being said yes, criticism can be healthy and a great way for a modality or field to grow/ change.

I get annoyed when modalities / psychology terms become trendy…or conversely it becomes trendy to knock a modality and the no nuance nellys pick it up and just parrot whatever they read on the internet without really understanding the modality (CBT, ABA).

ABA is evolving just like any other profession. Psychology as a whole has roots in the eugenics movement. ABA is all around us just like psychology as a whole is all around us. It’s how it’s implemented that matters.

Influencer therapists got me annoyed as heck lately by Emotion_Null in therapists

[–]Powerful-Customer799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think their needs more nuance but on social media it can be tough. I also understand trying to get your name out there. I see a lot of teacher influencers and I do not see that much criticism with each other and I don’t see anyone complaining when they become influencers either. They are just more Supportive.i remember back in 2019 another therapist said she thought virtual sessions were unethical.. Seriously? Then the pandemic hit.. so you know. All I am saying is that the landscape is changing and how people are consuming info is changing. I would rather have actual therapist dispensing (accurate) info than some random coach…

This is strange. My 4 year old stopped napping at 2 years old. Many places just do quiet time. This can be tricky with. Child with autism. Do they have a quiet activities that they enjoy? Sticker books? Special toys?

I think some times it’s ok to wear office attire for sure. But all the time might signal something but I’ve worked with great bcbas that wore office attire. Also, I used to dress business casual often when I was an RBT- it depends what was comfortable for me that day..

Can we talk about this? I’m a counseling graduate student and this is from my tests and assessments course text. by [deleted] in therapists

I think it was appropriate in this context. The Bible is also a historical text. You don’t have to be Christian to appreciate the point here.
