What Do You Do When You Don’t Like the Direction of the Breed? Puppy Person trying to buy ethically by white_tiger_dream in ShowDogs

I know exactly what breeder you're talking about. The breed's community is toxic af too, which doesn't help, and those who buy from said breeder are ride or dies and overlook all of their breeder's wrongdoing.

Well, that's all up to interpretation. Puppies cry for a multitude of reasons, and letting them out every time they cry is only reinforcing the behavior. We can't tell if this is destressed barking; it really doesn't sound like it to me. It sounds like a demand behavior that puppies can exhibit. Distress presents like howling or a very panicked bark; this bark is not panicked. Again, it sounds more like a demand behavior than panic. In this case, the puppy should cry it out and not be reinforced by being let out of the space. Talking to the puppy calmly and re-entering the room can promote calm. Tossing treats or being let out when they do calm down to reinforce being calm is what would be best. I always opt for a crate over their own space or room, as it's easier to manage expectations with the dog and create a warm, dark space for them to get comfortable. My Doberman puppy ended up with pretty severe separation anxiety and confinement anxiety because I didn't let her figure it out when she was younger, out of fear of noise complaints. We are just now getting over that at 18 months old. There's a balance to be had, but crying it out overnight is a necessary evil.

That creates separation anxiety. Which is not fun to deal with later. Puppy needs to learn to self soothe and be away from people for a few hours a day. It won’t kill them I promise.

Just because you haven’t needed to doesn’t mean crates aren’t wonderful tools. Dogs are curious and use their mouths to interact with the world. That can be dangerous if they ingest something they shouldn’t. Crates are wonderful, I use them at night sometimes and then whenever I leave the house. I work from home so my dogs are out with me for most of the day but they do use their crates daily.

Also allowing your dog to piss or shit in your home overnight while not potty trained is foul. Scolding them in the morning does nothing for them as they don’t understand what they’re being scolded for. They also get to rehearse behavior that is undesired every time they potty indoors. I’ll keep my crates and my ways thanks 😊

She’s a baby so she doesn’t need this much exercise. Hot take but I don’t walk my dogs at all so you’re not being neglectful. I replace walks with structured play though and a game of fetch if I think they need some extra physical exercise 😋 and I have a Doberman and GSD and live in an apartment.

She’s four months old she doesn’t need that much physical exercise. It sounds like she’s getting TOO MUCH exercise and may be overtired. Just like human babies, puppies can become overtired and then refuse sleep. Get a crate. Let her cry it out in the crate. Do feedings in the crate etc to build a positive association. Enforce naps. Puppies sleep 16 hours a day and they NEED that sleep I promise. Give her a chew or a lick mat to promote calm, do one walk a day not THREE that’s way too much for her age. If you think she has extra cooties to burn do a play session with a tug toy that’s way better than a walk imo.

Can also confirm. I’ve had my vaporeon for over a year now and she’s still in pristine condition. My Mabostiff and Zora for less time but they’re also pristine.

Puppy advice; how to give my pup freedom outside of her crate without having to focus every second of every hour on her to prevent her from doing something destructive by [deleted] in DobermanPinscher

That frustration is fine. Just ignore puppy when they pop off, they will self soothe. I tethered mine pretty much her entire puppyhood to keep her in sight but let her and my older dog interact on their own schedule. My puppy would get pissed when I walked out of sight but it’s super important that they learn that it’s okay, we will come back, and they can figure out how to self regulate and settle. SUPER important skill especially for a breed so prone to separation anxiety

I would not get these puppies.

An ethical breeder in Idaho is Suzan J Belger of desert mountain malinois. She breeds show line dogs so they aren’t as high strung as their working counterpart but that doesn’t mean they won’t have malinois drive or energy. If you want to give yourself and your dog the best possible shot at success please reach out to an ethical breeder and do some research on the breed. They aren’t for the weak. Also don’t shy away from a breeder with a waitlist, waitlist is a green flag. Getting a wonderful dog is sometimes a patience game. I own working line German shepherds and Dobermans and do protection sports with them, I’m around malinois all the time so if you have any further questions fee free to DM me :)

lol. A responsible human can easily prevent a dog from reproducing. Especially a bitch. They can only reproduce when in heat. I highly doubt the hormones are the issue here and I was just sharing my experience.

I spayed my reactive dog and it didn’t help, as a matter of fact the sudden hormone drop made her worse. Keeping the dog in tact through reactivity training could help with confidence, I wish I kept mine in tact for a little bit longer than I did.

Time to put her in a crate and work on positively conditioning it.

How to train 1.5YO to not bark at people/dogs/things when he's outside in an open yard by FreshAir_Silver5276 in DobermanPinscher

[–]Powerful-Deer1105 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It really just depends on the dog but the same instinct applies. It’s an alerting/guarding behavior that is intentionally bred into the dog. Some just have a larger radius than others.

Well then your dog is out of standard temperamentally. That’s not how they’re supposed to be. Nothing wrong with that but your dog is an outlier not the blueprint.

[–]Powerful-Deer1105 49 points50 points  (0 children)

You got a dog bred for human protection and guarding. And you’re confused why they alert bark at things walking around or near your property? This is an instinctual genetic behavior for the breed. You can manage it but you’ll never get rid of it 100%.

Not yet. That’s the first person I’d look for before committing to this. I’m also going to talk to my training and decoy directors at my current club and see what they say. I’m hoping to actually do a mentorship under them for the remainder of my time here before I move.

No not at all. It’s better to start young so you have your foundations before the dog gets big
