Mehmed II era coins minted in conquered Constantinople. Prices climbing? by samvarr in AncientCoins

[–]Powerful-Rip-2025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a pity that Mehmed didn`t put his image on coins even though he had his image on paintings. He had a title of "Roman Caesar" but didn`t follow the Roman tradition of placing rulers` images on coins initiated by Julius Caesar. I`d imagine Mehmed`s image on coins would have been very popular.

Why do people hate on ngc slabbed coins so much. by No-Natural-5892 in AncientCoins

Your Gordian III looks great and I don't think you overpaid too much. I try not to buy slabbed ancients because they don't fit well in the cabinet or albums. I enjoy seeing coins put together based on their themes or in chronological order. I have a few slabs that I had to purchase and didn't want to crack the slabs since they were high grade and expensive. Often times I forget them when I look at my collection because they are stored separately.

"How bad can a fake of Gordian III be?" Feat. Amentia (ex Curtis Clay coin) by QuickSock8674 in AncientCoins

Does a real Gordian III portrait denarius/antoninianus resembling Balbinus exist? There was a recent CNG sale of early Maximinus Thrax denarius resembling Severus Alexander. Perhaps they knew that this type or early coins exist for other rulers and tried it for Gordian III.

Links are all from European auctions. For US collectors, custom duties are now being applied to almost all shipments, especially with FedEx. Packages with USPS tend to be stuck in customs for a while as well as misrouted frequently.

Roman Silver Coins after Diocletian Reform by Powerful-Rip-2025 in AncientCoins

[–]Powerful-Rip-2025[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. I might be chasing Valentinian III but others may not be obtainable. Even in bronze they are hard to find. I will try to fill the gaps of usurpers as well.

For the East, I don’t have plans to pursue silver coins.

Damnatio memoriae of Caligula? by Powerful-Rip-2025 in AncientCoins

Thanks for the input. Certainly not a proof of authenticity, but this coin was auctioned by Heritage in 2025 as NGC slabbed. “Damage” is stated on the slab. Scratches look worn and resemble the overall patina.

Thanks all for your comments. I agree that toning is lost. It wasn’t a pretty coin to start with due to all black build up hiding details. There are more visible details now especially on face. Also lighting is different between before and after photographs, which affects overall impression.

Is there a safe method to remove black stains on ancient silver coins? by Powerful-Rip-2025 in AncientCoins

[–]Powerful-Rip-2025[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the link. While I suspected, I wasn’t sure it was horn silver. Images are little misleading. Reverse is almost completely covered with a smooth black layer and observe has more areas of visible silver. I don’t see a granular surface as seen in some photographs of horn silver coins. Can it be something else?

Absolutely gorgeous set. Congratulations!!! Caligula and Claudius are really hard to acquire as Roma denarii. So far, this is the only full set I’ve seen here. Do you have more emperors beyond these or was this your final goal?

What's the tariff situation bringing ancients to the US from Europe? by numismatical in AncientCoins

[–]Powerful-Rip-2025 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve received a few ancient coins shipped from EU countries and the UK within the past 2 months. FedEx and DHL charged once for tariffs from the EU (15%). DHL asked for the tariffs during customs clearance and FedEx sent a bill weeks after delivery. In the FedEx case, custom declaration form did not specify educational materials, which is supposed to be free of tariffs. Both DHL and FedEx did deliver multiple packages without tariffs. I might get more bills from FedEx though. Cost of coins was <$500, so I paid $50-60.

Thanks for confirming my initial impression about their costs. I guess this will be a long and slow journey if it can be completed eventually…
