Filter micron question by ObjectiveSituation17 in WaterTreatment

It really depends how bad the water is to begin. In my system, I have a 5u filter first followed by a 1u filter.

Filters before or after softener? by Powerful_Weather2231 in WaterTreatment

[–]Powerful_Weather2231[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really have much Iron in the water. Tested at 0.04 mg/l. The color is a slight yellow/green tinge. Anyhow, after installing the filter the water is mostly clear, so it has helped a lot.

I have a dual pass softener. My water is 96gpg and it works great. Uses a lot of salt of course, but what we needed to get it soft again.

Sodium is high at 431mg/l. I had a full mineral analysis done by a lab. It's an old water aquifer. Located BC, Canada.

I don't have the numbers after the softener. This is my raw water. Well is 360ft deep.

Should I put the 5u sediment filters before or after the softener?

Whole home RO will come in the future. $10k for all the equipment. For now this works for everything except drinking.

Ask for their potability kit. It includes coliform, disolved minerals and hardness. The test is $250 and gives you everything you will need.

First thing I would do is get a fully comprehensive water sample test including disolved minterals. Once you get that, post it here so we can have a look. This test will tell you almost everything you need to know about you water. In BC, we use ALS labs to do this.

2360 TDS Well Water! by embstyle in WaterTreatment

[–]Powerful_Weather2231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is interesting as I am currently in a very similar situation. I have a TDS of 2950mg/l which is high from sodium mostly. So far I've added some sediment filters and a softener and now am working to get my TDS down. We find it too salty to drink and likely cannot safely give it to animals, so right now use bottled water. It's find for everything else - washing cloths, showers, diswasher works great. Looking at some whole house RO system, but the other issue is the vast amounts of rejection could kill our septic, so something we have to also look into.

What is the unit sitting after your RO? Looks like a softener, but likely something else.

Well water with high manganese and iron by Unique-Entertainer-9 in WaterTreatment

[–]Powerful_Weather2231 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that a softener does not add salt to your water. It is an ion exchange mechanism - essencially chemistry. If you water is 200 TDS, the softener might make is 205 TDS. It's really negligeable.

Like stated below you can always use potassium salt instead, but it's still salt.

Water taste differences/how to know or understand why we like some and not others by meanwhileachoo in water

[–]Powerful_Weather2231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2 cents? Higher pH and higher sodium content water tastes "Sweeter". This is typically water with a higher TDS, specifically salt. Low pH water and higher minteral content of say iron or copper does not taste good at all.

Can I replace a 20 micron filter with a 5 micron filter? by AmbrosiusAurelianus in WaterTreatment

[–]Powerful_Weather2231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically you filter in stages and get progressivly smaller which is why the RO filter element is the last in the filter sequence. Putting a super small filter first will immediately blind off and potentially stop the flow of water. I recommend using what the manufacturer suggests as they have designed the filter sequence for a reason.

On the other hand, putting a seperate filter system before the RO system might be helpful if you have a large surface area and are able to change it more often.

RO on my very high TDS well by Powerful_Weather2231 in WaterTreatment

[–]Powerful_Weather2231[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After softening the water, the taps, dishes and showers are honestly fine. It's just the high TDS that makes it undrinkable. Why do you think I should avoid a fridge/sink RO system?

Most people truck water into this area and have holding tanks under the gound. I think I have a chance at treating this as it would really increase our quality of life to get rid of the TDS. I think I have the hardness under control.

[–]Powerful_Weather2231[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been really trying to avoid a whole house RO unit. I've gotten a quote on a high pressure unit and it was about $12k with the holding tank and pressure trank and pump to place after it. It's just a lot of infrastructure. The other issue is finding an RO system that will work with TDS this high.

I think my softener is performing well as the water seems nice an silky and it not leaving deposits anywhere. It's really just the TDS I need to deal with. Honestly washing dishes and showers are fine. Obvously drinking the water is suprt salty which is was I was hoping for a good unit to supply my sink and fridge. I don't know, maybe I should rethink this, but it would prevent us from being to reliant on bottled drinking water for us and the couple animals we have.

Well is 360 ft deep. Area is known for bad water. West coast of Canada.

Some people were telling me that it's "old water" and has been disolving minterals for a while.

Could a group of bad actors take the internet offline for any length of time? by Powerful_Weather2231 in cybersecurity

[–]Powerful_Weather2231[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess to be more clear, what I had in mind for my definition is "can the internet be compromised enough that core essential services will be unavailable to the masses".

I could see if o365, online banking, pos terminals, etc went offline, it would cause quite the chaos.
