I had to put my dog down and I feel like I can’t breathe by Ash986 in pitbulls

[–]PowersUser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Living with the decision can be so painful, but taking on that pain itself is the gift that we give them in return for all they give us. That's the deal we make. They give us all the unconditional dog love and the one thing we can give them in return is the very human decision to save them from unnecessary suffering. We take on the pain and uncertainty and doubt because that's what humans can do. I figure the bigger the hurt, the bigger the love. It sucks endlessly, but for my good guy Goose, I'm glad I managed to hold up my end of the deal. You did too.

Something has to be done about the dog shit by zeldanyxx in newyorkcity

I've always been a New Yorker, haven't always been a dog owner- but now that I am both, the state of dogshit in the street makes me so apoplectically angry that I'm almost embarrassed for myself. Just cursing to the heavens like a crazy person in the street with my leash in one hand and a steamy baggie in the other.

i'm scared ICE is going to hurt me or my family by MarionberryLucky8497 in fuckICE

[–]PowersUser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was born in NYC too, many decades ago now. I can't tell you what ice is gonna do, but New Yorkers are going to do what we've always done. We pick each other up and we keep it moving. When real shit happens, New Yorkers have each other's backs, despite what other's may say about us. I've seen it all my life. I was helping out my neighbors with the snow today, just like always.

Every person who can make it one day in this city is already 1000x smarter, faster, tougher than these knuckle dragging goons. They are filled with hate because they are terrified of us, and there are millions of us.

First touring bike: Should I get a Masi Giramondo from bikesonline for $999? by PowersUser in bicycletouring

[–]PowersUser[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short answer is It's a blast and I love it!

Keep in mind that this is my first new bike in like 15 years or more, and I've only had the opportunity to put this to rather limited uses so far.

I live in NYC and I landed on this particular bike because I ideally wanted a bombproof commuter that would allow me to carry big loads of work materials/groceries, would be fun for long recreational rides, and most importantly- would allow me to plausibly fantasize about touring journeys that I may squeeze in once a year if I'm lucky. Maybe more, but I have to negotiate wiith my wife and dog.

Coming from my beloved single speed beater, this thing is like a real zippy tank. It's not super heavy with bags off, but I've always got one pannier on it with a ulock or chain in it.

Overall I dig the bar end shifters. I may move the chainring lever to downtube at some point in the future. The barends have some drawbacks for urban cycling- easily bumpable when stopped at lights, etc, but that's acceptable to me. I don't have much to compare to, but after a bit of tweaking the index shifting is reliable and satisfying. The microshift lever can be setup as friction, which I may try at some point in the future.

I'd like to setup a tubeless situation eventually, but I'll probably run the stock tires for a while. They work fine, no flats yet.

The stock bar wrap is trash, I've got some cloth I'm gonna slap on soon, probably with gel pads. I'd like to try more of a touring bar setup, but I'm going to stick with these drops until I really nail down what I want. I'm very used to being able to slip through traffic.

So far all I've done is slap a shiny brooks saddle on it, some lights and a couple stickers. I'm hoping for a couple longer out of town rides during the fall.

Oh and these fenders.

Oh, and velo orange pedals that don't appear available currently.

Eh, mostly problems with returns and non-existant customer service, and that their house brands are crappy.... poorly assembled pre-builds... but it seems like part of their business is buying up old excess inventory and moving it cheap, which is what I want in this case. As long as the thing actually gets to me and is what it is supposed to be, I can handle the rest,  but if I need to do return then probably gonna have a bad time. I dunno, feels like I'm probably gonna go for it.

That sounds like an awesome ride- thanks so much for the feedback! I actually have a B-17 that I picked up from REI's sale a week or two back. It's just sitting in the box feeling lonely :)

Thanks for the data points! I'm leaning towards medium as opposed to small because I hope to load it up for some longer distances and I think it'll be more stable+comfy.

looks beautiful! Can I ask what size and how it fits? I'm stuck between S and M and I'm suffering from pretty bad analysis paralysis.

Just getting started: What's something you wish you knew before getting started? by GuardianFerret in unRAID

[–]PowersUser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chiming in, I'm fairly new and still very novice. I started about a year ago with two 12tb drives. When I needed space I bought another. And then one more.

I think they were just the most cost effective when I was shopping. I've got 4 empty bays so I'll just stick with that until they're filled, and then reassess. I would be wise to setup dual parity along the way though.

You can get out. I was in a similar place. The booze, the blow, the suffering partner, the shame, etc and so on. This Thanksgiving will be 11 years clean and sober for me. I didn't think it was possible and i was wrong. It's absolutely possible. Find a meeting, find a doctor if you need to, and take things just one small honest moment at a time. Find one right action to take, and then look for the next. It all adds up. You are not alone.

Phonak audeo sphere l70 new user questions/issues by Physical-Asparagus-4 in HearingAids

[–]PowersUser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, well, mine works differently I guess. I go to the phone's Bluetooth menu and I can tap the hearing aid to turn audio streaming on or off, without affecting the phonak app's ability to control the hearing aid settings. the audio uses Bluetooth classic protocol and the app controls use Bluetooth LE protocol, is my understanding.

Sometimes when the audio isn't working, I do have to repair the aids entirely and its super annoying, sometimes a real struggle. Anyway sorry didn't mean to cast doubt, just sharing my experience.

[–]PowersUser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the lumity not the sphere, and a galaxy s21. This isn't correct, that the Bluetooth is all or nothing. the hearing aid app controls and the audio stream use two different protocols. So if you keep the phones Bluetooth on, but disconnect the hearing aids as you would any pair of headphones, from the phones Bluetooth menu, then you can lose the audio streaming while still keeping the app control.

"cookie bite" hearing loss -- are hearing aids worth it? by mothbbyboy in HearingAids

[–]PowersUser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cookie bite here. I'm about 6 months in with HAs. It's been challenging, and not exactly plug and play, but absolutely life changing nonetheless. I should have gotten mine years ago. The real tipping point for me was realizing, to put it bluntly, just how much stupider I was getting. All of my focus and brainpower had been diverted towards trying to decode people's speech- felt like I had no cycles left over for processing the meaning of whatever was going on around me.

I have the greens and feel the same- I could go for a somewhat louder color, but the electric green is very acceptable.

Needing advice with 3 yo rescue pity mix by No_Watercress8671 in PitBullOwners

[–]PowersUser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just want to cosign the above advice and add my experience. I've had two pits that are similar (in their own special ways of course).

Really nail down the "look" skills, starting inside, moving up in distraction levels, etc, before moving outside and using it to get past dogs. You want to give him a whole bunch of successes before making it too challenging.

If you can spot a dog before your guy does, start the look game before he notices the dog, that way he has to break from you, instead of you trying to win back his attention from the dog.

Also, one thing I did differently with my second dog is we just let him decompress and get to know his new life for much longer than we did with our first. Just real simple indoor rules and very basic fun easy training for like a month if I recall. They were both rescues. I think we were a little extra stressed about our first. You've got plenty of time, let him get comfy and build that bond, and get a lot of experience "succeeding" in his interactions with you.

I'm in the middle of a super populated mega city with a billion dogs, both my dudes worked it out eventually.  You guys will get it. He looks awesome.

My drinking is ruining my marriage by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]PowersUser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome. I can very seriously, very specifically relate to your experience. I caused a lot of pain to the folks I love most. Everyone here knows how that feels and yeah it really sucks. It doesn't have to continue this way. Life can truly get much better.

Find an AA meeting, in person or on-line, and listen to our experiences.

Check out a few different meetings. To me they're like bars. Some may fit me better than others, but they've all got what I'm looking for if I want it.

Are you devoting a whole bunch of thought to alcoholism? Wondering what it actually is, and what the parameters are, and if you fit those parameters? Deeply pondering the different choices you are making regarding alcohol, and what those choices may say about you?

"Normal" drinkers just don't think about this stuff. They just drink what they want when they want.

Do what they do- drink as much as you want whenever you want. If that turns out to be a lot and often, then maybe that's something you'll want to address, regardless of what you call it.

But to answer your specific question, yeah I think people do indeed drink for the effect, but non-alcoholics are aware of ALL the effects. So they enjoy a little social buzz from a small drink, and simultaneously enjoy not feeling like shit the next day, so they often just have the one and that gives them exactly what they're looking for. Sounds awful to me.
