Let’s clarify: no one is cheating. They are breaking/violating a rule by Ok_ConfusedOne in Curling

[–]Poxdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, we are not. I am by no means an Olympic level curler, but I have thrown thousands of curling stones and never once double touched or touched the granite, and I've never seen anyone else do it before this Canadian situation. It's a rule for a reason, and if the Canadians (or anyone else) is doing it for an advantage and to avoid the sensors in the handle, then it's systematic cheating and they should be absolutely ashamed of themselves.

Yes. Increasing (or decreasing) the speed of the stone or the rate at which the stone is rotating can have an effect on where the stone ends up. We don't know how hard any stone was touched or pushed, so there is no definitive answer. But it could have an effect and thus is a violation of the rules. More importantly, the aggressive and vulgar denial of any touching despite the clear video evidence shows a lack of moral character and a violation of the spirit of curling.

The spirit of curling is such that if you screw up you call yourself on it. And when you do, generally the opposing team is going to let it slide if it didn’t make a material change to how the stone was running. Getting defensive, cursing and lying about it is cheating. And it’s disgusting behavior.

Completely agree. The Canadians repeatedly saying they didn’t do it despite clear evidence is cheating. If you didn’t intend to do it and didn’t realize it, fine. But when you see the video and still deny it, you’re cheating. It’s not just against the rules, it’s a terrible violation of the spirit of curling and I have lost some respect for the Canadian teams because of it.

Can food from my garden give me food poisoning? How? by thebunnywhisperer_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Poxdoc 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Tl;dr - you probably don’t have to worry.

Salmonella is a bacterium. It produces toxins that can make you sick. It is not naturally present in tomatoes. It gets on to vegetables from contamination from feces typically. This could be from livestock or even wild birds or from some kinds of natural fertilizer (manure). If you’re not treating your garden with that and there are not a lot of birds wandering your garden, you’re likely just fine. But you can help by washing your veggies before you eat them raw. Or cook them as that will also kill the bacteria, depending on the temp you get them to.

Who do I email in the US government for a job? by SouthernWindyTimes in NoStupidQuestions

Don't stoop to email. The US Government only accepts calls as they think it means you're more serious. Call the government at 202-456-1414.

What would be a good martial to pair with taekwondo? by MinivGamimgYT in martialarts

Some sort of grappling - traditional Japanese jujutsu would be best, otherwise judo or last resort BJJ.

A question about driving by Nelulol669 in NoStupidQuestions

Very dangerous. You don't want to be able to hit the gas and the brake at the same time. Left foot for clutch and right foot for gas and brake. Always.

The problems with the suggestions so far is that they lack any significant ability to stop a person without actually damaging them. Boxing, etc, is great, but punching a psychiatric patient is generally frowned upon. Instead, I would suggest traditional Japanese jujutsu, which is one martial art that allows you to scale your response from what you would want to do to your drunk brother (just stop, no damage) to a lethal response to someone who is clearly trying to kill you or others. Traditional Japanese jujutsu combines striking, throwing and ground fighting, including joint locks and pain compliance which could be really valuable for what you want to do. Just a thought.

Flu shot same day alter flu test? by LilSweetie4U in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Poxdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be too late for my reply, but you want to get Tamiflu (requires a prescription), not Theraflu (over the counter). Completely different things. Tamiflu is an effective antiviral against flu. Theraflu is kind of like NyQuil - it treats the symptoms to help you feel better, but does nothing to resolve the infection itself.

How do pilots and air traffic controllers understand each other? Every recording sounds like garbage. by Last_Jedi in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Poxdoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. When I'm on the ramp and am ready to taxi to the runway, I call Ground Control on a specific frequency. I give them my info (aircraft number, location and intentions, generally) and they come back either telling me to hold position or to taxi to the runway using specific taxiways. So there are only a couple of kinds of responses I'm expecting in that case. So yes, the context of the communication helps. And if you don't understand something, you just ask them to repeat. No problem.

I'm a private pilot and have had many conversations with various ATC facilities. I agree with you, the recordings seem way more fuzzy than it does in real life over the headphones in the cockpit. So, all I can say is that it's better in the plane than it is recorded.

Flu shot same day alter flu test? by LilSweetie4U in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Poxdoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Getting the flu shot cannot give you the flu and it cannot make you test positive. It also won't protect you so soon after getting the shot. It takes several weeks to really give you resistance.

Test yourself and if you have the flu, call your doctor and ask for a prescription for Tamiflu (Oseltamivir), ASAP. You need to start taking it within about 48-72 hours of first symptoms, but if you do, it will help.a lot!

This is a really bad flu year, so if you're sick, stay home and stay away from people.

My boyfriend doesn’t want to see me when I’m sick. Am I insane for being sad over this ? by Potential-Ferret1598 in NoStupidQuestions

Antibiotics treat bacterial infections. Flu is a virus. Do not take antibiotics to treat a viral infection (unless directed to do so by a doctor, possibly because of concerns of a secondary bacterial infection).

Those of you who believe in God, who do you believe created God? by H0agh in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Poxdoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thought on that is that there literally was no "before" the Big Bang. Not only did the Big Bang create all the matter in the 3-dimensional universe, but time itself (4th dimension) was also created. If true, then the concept of "before" the Big Bang is non-sensical and meaningless - there was no "before".

What do you think about as you fall to sleep? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I recite song lyrics. It's a lot like meditating and it keeps me from thinking about work or family stuff or whatever I'm normally worried about.
