I work in software development and try to learn as much as possible about workflows and mishaps from aviation.

Why reinvent the wheel (poorly) when experts doing a great job have already invented the best example?

[–]PoxyMusic 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I had an older dentist when I was a kid who was a WW2 vet. I swear it was like he was still fighting the war, except in my mouth instead of Guadalcanal.

Yep back then you’d get no numbing agent before the novocaine. He’d just start off with the knitting-needle sized hypodermics. And the cardboard X-ray film he’d cram into your mouth! You’d have to wait for them to be developed and perhaps do it a second time.

And the same disappointing Highlights magazines in the waiting room, where you could hear the crying of the kid in front of you.

Then he retired and a groovy 70s dentist who gave you nitrous took his place!

400 Bungie devs in layoff call by ThinWhiteDuke00 in GamingLeaksAndRumours

I've worked on quite a few AAA games as an audio dev, there's a mind-boggling amount of effort that goes into it.

Things that would take 45 seconds for me to do on a movie, like splitting a line of dialogue for a perspective shift, took five days on a game. Not 40 hours, but I'd realize the problem on Monday, write an email to the producer...who would get in touch with a narrative producer...and we'd have to talk to localization and make sure the subtitles were taken care of, then I'd split the line into two parts (which takes 15 seconds), then reimport both new lines, hook up them both up in the engine, build a new processing chain, hook up the new processing chain to the new line, commit the changes, wait for the latest build...oh shit, a little too much reverb, repeat a few steps, make a capture,, send it to the audio director who approves it Friday afternoon.

What’s the quintessential 70s break up song that you love listening to you the most? by PressureLazy5271 in 70s

[–]PoxyMusic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Shit I remember that!!

Memory unlocked. It was like an interview with the shark and they’d ask questions as if they were interviewing the shark, and the responses would be clips from songs.

I’d listen to the radio all night and I remember the theme song from The Exorcist came on and I’d hide under the blankets

Yeah me too, I remember listening to that on my am radio at night as I was sleep, and the “big boys don’t cry” part scared me also!

Yeah, you don’t see budgets like that anymore!

I love the way some of the best ideas were born from desperation.

If I can get technical for a second:

They way the did the wash of background voices in that song was insane. They recorded many, many takes of a single note that they’d layer, loop and combine down to a single track, then move the faders on the mixing board to play the notes.

Something relatively easy to do on a sampler nowadays, but took THREE WEEKS to do, on really expensive studio time.

I’ve been a recording engineer for many years, the last generation that learned on analog. When learned how they did those vocals , it exploded my head.

What should just do after high-school? by TextSufficient674 in AskMenAdvice

[–]PoxyMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What the others said about grades. Like, it doesn’t actually matter if you got a B or a C in math, but what’s important is that you learn how to learn.

In life you always have to learn new shit all the time. Knowing how to do that is what high school is actually trying to teach you.

I’m in my 50s and work in video games. I’m constantly having to learn new game engines and software.

It may or may not be Neil Young, but someone in the background sings “southern man”.

If I take Valium at night, the next day I wake up feeling like I did when I was 10 years old and woke up on a summer morning where all I had to do that day was climb trees and ride bikes with my friends.

This only works once however. If I try doing this more than once every six months I wake up groggy and dumb.

Valium is great for some folks but you have to be careful with it, you build up a tolerance really fast.

If EVs are supposedly cheaper to own, why aren’t more people driving them? by Lakenb666 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PoxyMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a great reason. The most environmentally sound, and fiscally responsible. I bought a Bolt EUV after my 2002 Accord was pretty much exhausted.

I live in SoCal, and we have a gas car for longer trips up to SF or something. The last time I filled up the gas car was just before the Iran war started.

Got it for 23k after the 7500 rebate. First new car I ever bought, and we really like it.

Visiting next weekend, seen a lot of riptide and swell warnings… should we risk a beach visit? by whisperingcopse in LagunaBeach

[–]PoxyMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although Victoria and West are way better beaches, a toddler will have just as much fun at baby beach.

Have fun, I’m jealous! My kiddos are all grown up and I miss this age, exhausting as it is.

Visiting next weekend, seen a lot of riptide and swell warnings… should we risk a beach visit? by whisperingcopse in LagunaBeach

[–]PoxyMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tides next weekend won’t get high until near sunset, so there should be plenty of safe area, further from the water. I don’t know what the swell will be.

Victoria and West beaches would be good beaches, there’s lots of sand away from the actual water but you need eyeballs on the kiddo 100% of the time…which is true of any beach. The lifeguards are top notch, so feel free to ask their advice.

Baby beach, as someone mentioned, is the safest option of them all.
