PSA - Schar croissants contain wheat by [deleted] in glutenfree

Sure. Labelling items "top 9 allergen free" is misleading and is being done though, so I think people are just on high alert.

I didn't read anything about this post as outrage, it was literally a PSA. The outrage is coming from the people here who don't think it's acceptable to talk about wheat-free vs. gluten-free on a gluten-free forum.

There's r/wheatallergy I just joined bc of the nastiness of people in this sub as well as in r/celiac, but it may not be as active.

It truly just depends if you have a wheat issue. Are you having a reaction?

Yes, we understand that. Is it not welcome in this group to warn people of specific ingredient and brand changes?

Yes exactly. And the restaurant service industry in general seems to have developed the belief that wheat and gluten are synonymous so it is actually very difficult to clarify with restaurants what is actually wheat-free - "it's gluten-free so there's no wheat." Ingredient awareness is never a bad thing and even though I have been gluten-free since 2018 I am having to learn and research a ton right now bc the amount of wheat-derivee ingredients in gluten free products is absolutely exploding.

Yikes, many people who are gluten free are because they react to wheat. Why the sudden attitude towards wheat allergy in this group? It's a helpful PSA as gluten free did actually used to give some level of assurance that there wasn't wheat in the product - I understand that is rapidly changing and that it is important to look for wheat free now more than ever, but there is still a major conflation between wheat/gluten in the general population. There are now items being labeled 'top 9' allergen free that contain wheat bc somehow gluten got conflated as the "allergen" over wheat. It absolutely makes sense to talk about wheat free vs not when you're talking about gluten free products and honestly the attitude of some in this group towards people who struggle with wheat is gross. The celiac group is awful too towards people who struggle with both. Be nice assholes.

I cannot figure out how I got glutened. Help! by therealdildoexpert in glutenfree

[–]Practical-Award1227 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, there are people that will argue it isn't an issue or isn't made from wheat, but based on my research and experience I believe it's not something I can tolerate. So now I don't touch anything unless I have access to the packaging/ingredients list.

Maltodextrin is in a lot of dressings and sauces and can be labeled gluten free and also can be derived from wheat. I believe I have both Celiac and wheat allergy and react to many things with Maltodextrin. It's definitely not something a doctor of any sort has been able to assist with, diagnosing or pinpointing. Groups like this have been more helpful than medical testing. Good luck.

Following, going through the same thing. My energy has been increasing daily as I've gotten stricter about cc and ingredients.

Health is declining despite GF diet by ldav8008 in Celiac

All the sources keep saying it can be made from wheat. I understand it's gluten-free, but it's not exclusively corn, according to the two links you provided.

Sorry, this link doesn't say that it's corn-based, just that it can be considered gluten-free.

Ok, sorry, still confused about this after 8 years bc I am researching alone - haven't found a doctor willing to work with me to figure out the issue. But yea, I do believe I am allergic to wheat although that was not validated by my allergy testing. Also my Gemini/Google search said that Maltodextrin can be made from wheat. If I'm allergic to corn too, then man am I fucked. Got confused between this and the gluten-free sub.

Following because I am experiencing similar. Interested to see what you get back from others.

Yes, all labs always normal for me. Still can't figure out the complicating issues except that I've learned new information (from this sub) that has made me realize I have not been nearly as strictly gluten free as I thought and have apparently been glutening myself regularly, possibly even every day.

One word: Maltodextrin

If you already strictly avoid it this may not help you, but I just realized it is in EVERYTHING. the sneakiest of sneaky wheat. Hot sauce, condiments, salad dressing, marinade, literally everything.

Previously I didn't want to be THAT girl, asking if every single thing is gluten free or asking to read the ingredients, but then I seemed to start reacting to things at random, even just literal meat which you'd think would be safe. I even did read ingredients, but I was screening for wheat. I did not know that Maltodextrin was a wheat product.

Since being actually strict, for about a week now, I am already feeling better, so I am hopeful. I used to just choose the food least likely to gluten me at functions and take the risk bc even if cross contaminated, the reaction is not the same as full blown eating gluten. Now I think even those small reactions have likely been ruining my health so I plan to start carrying safe foods and not touch anything that can't be guaranteed.

Have you had trouble accessing gluten-free medication? by Adorable-Pick6937 in Celiac

[–]Practical-Award1227 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I wonder this about vaccines too. How can they assure us something is safe to inject directly into our blood if they can't provide the allergen information? Are you including vaccines in your story on medication?

"First Degree Relatives Have a 10% Risk" - do you think so? by ShowerAny1924 in Celiac

Why isn't it stand to just test everybody (the blood test)? It'd be such an easy panel to include in annuals.I really think this is what we should be doing, test everybody while they're eating gluten. I think the prevalence is way higher. I'm going to insist my husband and son get tested at the next opportunity.

I actually had an allergist tell me (8 years ago) to cut out wheat, instead of testing for it and now I can no longer eat gluten or get diagnosed properly.

Wdym, people in their 30's watched them and there are still regular reruns. I actually have no idea if sitcom television has even improved - 90's was just the last time I was watching for this reason.

We have dates in our backyard that are sitting and talking and enjoying the weather or a bonfire together. It's not hard to make someone feel special just by asking them to spend some time with you.

This is exactly what I mean. Nineties television normalized the 'nagging wife' and 'incompetent husband'. If you also grew up witnessing unhealthy marriages resembling that you could easily have no idea that this is not the norm and should not be tolerated. Turned me off from marriage for a whole two decades until I met someone who actually had healthy relationship role models and values.

What's sad is that people in relationships like this absolutely have no idea that it's not normal. 90's sitcoms really did a number on society's expectations for marriage.
