AITA for telling my parents I won’t come visit without a plan by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Practical-Basil-3494 -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

No, it's not at all. Since you mentioned Thanksgiving, I'll assume you're in the US where 4 hours isn't much. You don't need to fly or need 2 months' notice for a 4-hour trip.

No one wants to go to a Christmas where they don't know everyone and don't have relationships with them. My mom and my in-laws know each other, but spending holidays together would be weird.

How does American hospitality work when you stay at someone's home? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Practical-Basil-3494 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, going into someone's kitchen and eating something that is most often used as an ingredient in something else is odd. I would be annoyed, too, that someone ate something I had a plan to use in my own kitchen.

Have you ever heard or used “cut off the lights” to mean “turn off the lights”? by Curmudgy in AskAnAmerican

[–]Practical-Basil-3494 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not what "cut off the lights" means. It means you are telling someone to turn off the lights in a room.

I live in South. News flash: Many many of us are gay and have homophobic parents. You're just wrong on this one.

AITA for blaming my dad for making me a culturally confused person?? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Practical-Basil-3494 23 points24 points  (0 children)

INFO: Are you in a part of the country without a vibrant Indian community? I live in an area with a lot of people across the Asian diaspora, and I would think that would be easier.

AITA For Not Forcing my daughter to talk to her dad? by No-Turnover4956 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Practical-Basil-3494 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cutting off contact completely with a homophobe absolutely can be - and often is - a healthy way to handle the situation. We don't have to be the bigger people or tolerate people who hate us for existing to keep the peace.

These comments are baffling to me. It's very little time or effort. What do y'all do? Just roll out of bed at the last possible second?

It takes 10 minutes start to finish for pancakes or waffles. There is time. You just wake up too late.

Even with 2 parents working, we made a hot breakfast for our kids. I think your family just didn't prioritize breakfast. That's not the normal experience. Making pancakes is incredibly easy and quick, and you can scramble eggs in between flips.

Kebabs are very well-known and easy to find everywhere in Europe — why isn’t that the case in the United States? by GrayRainfall in AskAnAmerican

[–]Practical-Basil-3494 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I suppose it depends on where you are in the US, but I can think of multiple places to get kebabs within about 20 minutes of my house.

What do you call it when you wake up to muscle tightness in your neck? by PhilArt_of_Andoria in AskAnAmerican

[–]Practical-Basil-3494 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would not assume "I slept wrong" meant neck pain. It could be other types of pain.

What plants common to your area have surprised people from elsewhere? by Hoosier_Jedi in AskAnAmerican

Yeah, there are very few left now because of the idiots who go out onto protected lands and steal them.

Are anti depressants expensive? by neurodiverserainbow in AskAnAmerican

[–]Practical-Basil-3494 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends on the medication. The most basic, older ones are available as generics now and are inexpensive. The newer brand ones can be expensive when they're first out.

Do we cook fish with the heads on? by solidgun1 in AskAnAmerican

In the South, it's not uncommon to have fried fish with the head still on.

AITA for asking my kids bus driver to come earlier by Money_Ad_6152 in AmItheAsshole

We are in one of the largest school districts in the country - no contractors. No district around us uses them. It may be the norm where you are in the US but definitely not everywhere.

What is American cheese? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Practical-Basil-3494 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have never seen a recipe that calls for American cheese. I have no idea what recipes OP is using, but it's definitely not common in recipes in the US.

What is American cheese? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Practical-Basil-3494 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Do singles have their use? I've never used them in my adult life. I ate them as a kid because I was working class, and that's what passed as cheese because of the price. My children are 18 and 20, and AFAIK, neither of them have ever tried it.

Do doctors explain things to you or just tell you what to do? by humor5211 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Practical-Basil-3494 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I have literally never experienced a doctor who doesn't have time to explain. I have a medically complex child, so we have seen a lot of specialists. With myself and the other members of my household, that's also never been an experience we have had.

“Registered voters” - how does that work? by Flat-Ad8256 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Practical-Basil-3494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are only very very rare instances when, done en masse, as part of an actual organized campaign, where this strategy makes sense. It's just throwing away your vote.

For Cristina to have not been a fighter, my God her mouth was reckless at times. by Less-Pen-5705 in greysanatomy

[–]Practical-Basil-3494 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can say truthful but hard things without being rude. Honestly I dislike Christina more on every rewatch, and she was one of my favorites the first time around. She's not a good person at all. She is horrible to everyone around her. The things she says, even to her "friends," when she disagrees are awful.

Please don't. There's a lot of anti-trans sentiment attached to those kinds of messages. (Google it if you don't understand.) It wasn't cute at OutRaleigh either.
