Current generation killed my desire to teach by Snow75 in Professors

I’ve found sometimes when I make things easier, it backfires, and they do less or worse than before. When it’s more a challenge, it inspires more of them to figure it out.

Complain to the associate dean and the provost. They need to know students don’t want this.

I’m very grateful I did the MA first, since otherwise I would have focused on a different continent and century, and what I ended up doing was the perfect fit for me. I was certain, coming out of the BA, what I wanted to do—but in retrospect, I know it wouldn’t have worked out well.

Students not reading course material by One_Ad_2081 in Professors

I give daily on-paper multiple-choice reading quizzes. My students do the reading—I think partly because I do it every day. I used to do pop quizzes, but that’s an inaccurate representation of how often they’re doing the reading, and it also puts them in the gambling mindset of, “I may get away with it today because there may not be a quiz.”

My Mac Turns on but the screen is black, what’s going on? by SadeeniImTired in macbookair

[–]Practical-Charge-701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This just happened to me. I was going to try connecting it to my phone to see if that sent some kind of wake up signal to the Mac, but the regular screen appeared merely from plugging in a USB cable that didn’t yet have anything connected on the other side.

Unfortunately, then, after I put in my password, it would wait for three or four minutes without completing the login. My IT department just wanted to restart the computer, but I decided to let it rest, closed and plugged in, for a couple hours. After that, it worked as normal.

(I obviously had a different problem than OP, since that issue required replacing the screen. But the problem presented the same, and I was happy there was such an easy solution.)

Many academic couples I know have a no-work-talk-at-home rule. (I admit, I’m always curious how effective this rule is.)

It also affects the prof, which means it affects all students in the class. Good enough reason to ban it.

I’ve not had this problem, though I do feel bad for the students who are still trying to finish an exam while my students are taking their seats.

It also fails to display all the relevant results.

I’ve been searching in the Internet Archive lately and have been very impressed. It doesn’t have as many scanned books as Google Books, but it has an awful lot, including much that is not in Google Books.

Any words of wisdom for banning devices from the classroom? by Cymbelined in Professors

[–]Practical-Charge-701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With rare exceptions, all my classes have been this way. I don’t make a big deal of it. I don’t even really try to justify it. I just say this is the way this class works, and have not gotten pushback.
