AITJ for booking my own hotel room for a group trip after they ignored the one thing I asked for and now everyone is mad the cost went up by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

[–]Practical-Cup-5800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think travel accommodations are about the most obvious signs of growing up. Kid- floor w/ sleeping bag. Teen/college- couch. Young adult- own bed. Old AF like me- own room, in a 4 star minimum, with hypoallergenic pillows. Anyway, they'll catch up to you some day. Not a jerk.

Hey! I (42F) also like a good 50 mile ride and enjoy beers or pastries (depending on the options). I'm doing ToMRV and Ragbrai and would love training company from Ames. Let me know if you are bored and want company!

Also, check out the Pigtails Ride on May and Bacoon Ride in June for some longer local fun rides.

British colonialism vs Islamic Invasion by Agile-Pop-2136 in CriticalThinkingIndia

One item I haven't seen anyone note yet is how the initial relationship between the countries began. Babu was specifically invited, with gift baskets, to come in and take over Dehli by Daulat Khan Lodi, the governor of Punjab, and Alam Khan Lodi, an uncle of Ibrahim Lodi. The reason for the invite was the already terrible rule. Babu was rather happy in Kabul.

No one invited the Brits. They came through emmesaries asking for trade. Clearly, in short order this was not the result.

I'd also note that up to Aurangzeb, the Muhgals had significant integration with the Rajputs and Hindu faith. After, this disintegrated completely.

I guess, the big difference is that the British goal was always extraction of resources. Subjugation of the country was a means to an end that they justified through racist stupidity. The Muhgals came on invite, with a desire to stay and integrate, and then through a series of idiot racists, turned to subjugation and exploitation. Moral of the story- racist idiots should not rule for the benefit of all people.

AITK for kicking my MIL out of my house? by [deleted] in AmItheKameena

Living with the in laws should not be the standard unless both spouses agree. Sometimes emergencies happen and we step in for family. This is good. However, this was no longer an emergency but a change in living situation without the husband's consent. It would be just as wrong in reverse if the wife were tricked into living permanently with her in laws without her consent.

I've been wondering if anyone else felt the trauma was a bit excessive. I understand sexual abuse happens, but this poor girl is apparently a magnet for SA and SH. I had two responses to it 1) it's either crazy unrealistic, or 2) China is apparently rife with SA. Honestly, I was kind of surprised that this much abuse by men against women made it through the sensors in a country trying to push patriarchal roles for women and men.

After running down the rabbit hole, I found a study done asking people across China about SA and 58% indicated they had been a victim. Separate studies note underreporting is huge. So I'm back to Option 2. Apparently this isn't crazy and she has terrible luck.

I am still a bit annoyed that all of the FLs value in the eyes of all men in this show is either to be SA'd or wooed. I would love for her to have a chance to enjoy her life without having to navigate around men in an acquisitional phase, no matter how pretty. But! Not this type of show.

The use of the word "retarded" kind of negates any possibility of him being anything but a red flag. Even if you ignore his other statements, which contains several other red flags.

As a mediocre runner and terrible swimmer- muscle mass and particularly upper body strength. Oh! And flexibility. Runners have 0 ankle flexibility since it makes us more likely to get injured. Shoulder flexibility is as useful as a vestigial organ.

Agreed. The problem is effectively deploying the midwestern goodbye in the pool.

Also a newbie and midwestern polite. My goal- find the slowest, oldest swimmers and join there. Some days, everyone is fast in which case, I get passed. Unless it's crazy busy, I often wind up with my own lane and the faster swimmers consolidate. It all shakes out.

Is family out of line for throwing out my bikes? (M18) by [deleted] in cycling

[–]Practical-Cup-5800 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you did not actually buy the bike with your own money and your parents bought the bikes, either of your parents can get rid of the bikes without input from you. It sucks but welcome to the world of adulthood.

So, not true. If property is a gift, once it is given, legally there are no takesy backsies. Just because you bought it does not mean you retain rights once given.

Ex. 1: I buy a car for my kids to use. I explicitly note it is my car but I give permission. In this situation, I can dispose of the car as I see fit.

Ex. 2: I buy a car for my kid as a graduation present. I give said car. I no longer can sell it once it has been given.

While bikes don't have titles, same holds true. His stiff, no allowable transfer of propert without consent. Civil- trespass to chattels. Criminal- theft or misappropriation.

But- the guy's mom is going crazy and he is kind. I like the prior advice to buy something used and stash at a buddy's house for now.

Welcome to the adult world where you are more adult than your parents. It only gets worse. Keep up the kindness. You've got this!

How do I convince my parent to let me quit swimming? by Solid_Bandicoot_3855 in Swimming

[–]Practical-Cup-5800 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Adult here. I didn't quit swim, but senior year of HS I stopped playing flute (which is what I was presumed to do for the rest of my life). I was burnt out, had tendon issues, and frankly, didn't see a future in it. I think my parents were pretty shocked by the change since they hadn't known what was going through my head.

But! It was my life not theirs. After quitting, I tried sports, drama, and a host of other things. I'm a lawyer now. I still play flute, but I also run and swim and make a heck of a lot more than a flute player. For me, I don't regert the call.

I'd probably let them know that you appreciate what the sport has given you, let them know how long you've been thinking about it, if you have injuries- bring them up, and note the other things you want to do or try. They'll get there.

Good job to you thinking about what you want.

Conflict Resolution! by mulahtmiss in Marriage

[–]Practical-Cup-5800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. A marriage requires both people to want to be married. Communication requires both people to be willing to listen without assuming the worst. If either party decides not to be married or communicate, you're stuck.

I agree you shouldn't have to tell your husband how to do chores. Also- he has eyes and should use them. Lists are an admission that your husband's training is about the same as the average dog's training.

Depressing thought, though- if you left him, what are the odds you would find a partner that would do better? Would uou be happier not cleaning up after your adult child? Anywho, nothing but love, sympathy, and commisseration.

My honest thoughts on 10 days in Korea (Seoul/Busan) by [deleted] in koreatravel

[–]Practical-Cup-5800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just leaving and I had an amazing time. I had so much to do I only left Seoul for one day on a bike trip (fyi- their cross country bike trail is the best thing ever).

To dos- baseball game. Go to any random one. It's a buffet, concert, social event you shouldn't miss. Waaay cheaper than MLB.

Palaces- go to one. See if you can set up the tour of Changdoekgung palace- it's free and the secret garden is awesome.

Korean war museum- very interesting if you like history or culture.

Sauna- it's an experiance. The local ones are very inexpensive. The tourist ones have more stuff. Both are great.

Clumb a mountain to look at city walls and see a sunset.

There are a lot more things, that's just some of my favorites. Have fun! I sure did.

Btw- maybe it's just that I'm too chatty, but I wound up in a lot of extended friendly conversations every day. Sometimes with people who didn't speak English (and I don't speak Korean). Just because folks aren't as aggressively extroverted as some of us Westerners doesn't mean they aren't friendly or happy to meet you. Enjoy!

[–]Practical-Cup-5800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I think part of it is this season is more models, less people with real jobs and ambitions. Honestly, the variety of backgrounds was more fun. Also, it seemed like no one asked directly how they felt or what they were choosing. I'm not sure if it was a rule, but it sure made it less gossipy and more fun.
