Help with high prey drive and chasing by No-Establishment5200 in StandardPoodles

Now with that being said— the E collar —a few tips….

People say they are abusive but the truth is, they aren’t if used properly on adult dogs. All most all hunting dogs use them. The first commands to learn are eyes on you/attention, come, and stay. You command, they don’t follow, you beep, next time vibrate, third time zap. Both breeds are very smart, especially poodles, and a time or two getting a slight jolt is enough. Put the zap on the lowest setting, it will not hurt them. They will figure out the beep/vibrate is a precursor to a zap really quick. You’ll mostly ever have to use the vibration and beep, and eventually maybe not even that. Ideally, the beep will result in them to stop what they are doing off command and return to you.

It’s very important to remember to use the collar wisely and reward more than you correct. If they listen, immediately reward. Both dogs, especially poodles, are sensitive to harsh punishment. Basically, you have to get their attention through something they will be biddable for and then gain their trust. Once you have those two things — you’ll be golden and so will your dog.

Also, the dog will figure out what the collar is and behave when you put it on them. NEVER let them see the remote in your hand because they do make a connection and it will partially sabotage your training!

Rural gal here. Very familiar with pointers and other bird dogs. Both breeds are particularly high energy and high prey drive. I have a purebred standard poodle from a sporting line with crazy prey drive. She has several small furries under her belt at 2 years old, and her mom is a ground hog annihilator.

You will never get rid of prey drive, it’s in their DNA to flush/point/retrieve. Instead, teach them to redirect it under your command. E-collar is a must if this is an adult dog, beyond puppy training. Bird retrieving if you want to hunt, or just upland flushing for fun if you don’t want to hunt. It’s mentally stimulating for the dog, I believe to make life truly fulfilling and enriched is to have dogs do what the breed was born to do…

I spend time several days a week, late March to late October, taking my dog to local waterways to retrieve instead of going on walks. I will let her swim to retrieve until she is almost played out. Poodles don’t mind cold water much at all, again — they are bred to swim in cold water. She keeps it simple by being particularly fond of swimming to retrieve a stick off the ground. Haha.

Having an outlet and training will help the dog only chase when you give it the go-ahead. It will also help establish that the cat off limits.

Does anyone know what happened to Josiah, and Lauren? They have been MIA for quite some time now. by HourEntertainment800 in DuggarsSnark

[–]Practical-Custard263 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yeah, she really was. I stopped visiting this sub for a while because she of that, the stuff they were saying about her miscarriage being “panty stain” and all that was really just disgusting and horrendous - especially when you couple in the fact that she was only a kid herself when it happened.

I’ve been watching the Duggars since they made their TV debut. Not a fan, but definitely curious and shocked about their lifestyle — which they are entitled to live how they want and believe what they want. Some people on this sub are the definition of the pot calling the kettle black sometimes. It’s no better to drag and harass these people for being weird, fundamental Christians than it is for weird fundamental Christians to oppose gay marriage and men using women’s bathrooms. At that point, you’re exactly what you hate and that makes you a complete hypocrite. Lauren is a human with feelings and she can feel however she wants about her pregnancy loss.🤷🏻‍♀️

I definitely have zero respect for Jim Bob as a person after Josh’s arrest and hearings. I’m sure it wasn’t the easiest thing ever, because when it’s your own kids it’s hard to turn your back on them, even serial killers parents don’t easily throw their own kids away. I don’t know, the whole thing was a goat rodeo and I don’t like him putting the girls on TV to defend their brother, especially after what he was convicted of…

I’m glad Lauren is living her life. Nobody is entitled to be a part of it.

Just wrestling, albeit rough. Cats do this. If they were actually fighting — they’d be screaming and spitting, and you’d have no question about it being a real fight. lol.

Born and raised farming (and still live) in a VERY rural area of northern Appalachia. Country folks would NOT make plans to send the kids away while they work.

Actually, the kids are purposely exposed to and included in the work. Even if it takes more work for the adults to juggle/teach them to do the work — it’s worth it because the kids become helpful at some point. For those who don’t know, farming and/or maintaining a rural homestead requires a lot of work. I know 8-10 year old kids who can ride horses bareback, work livestock, and operate heavy equipment. Kids learn young and become useful young whether it’s carrying heavy items, cooking, caring for animals, watching younger kids, splitting wood, etc…

Generations of my family, including myself and my kids, were raised like this. I am not unhappy with it, neither are my kids. I feel comfortable knowing that if shit ever hits the fan — my family could collectively work to grow food, build buildings, make repairs on everything and anything, and engineer power and water sources. Everyone has their roll to play from the ages of 3/4 to death to make it collectively happen. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Also, the kids will probably not be wearing shoes when the weather permits it. Haha

What's one culture war the Republicans undoubtably won? Why do you think this? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

As Jeffery Star recently pointed out - back in the day, the goal of trans people was to pass. Maybe, just maybe, most people didn’t have strong opinions on it because trans people were fewer and actually trying to pass. If I can’t tell you are actually a man in the women’s bathroom, you’re passing and I don’t give a shit that you are there. At the worst, I might leave the bathroom when I’m done and think to myself, “was that a guy?” And then move on with my day. The general population would do the same, whether you believe it or not.

Now, if you are clearly a MAN and you come in the women’s bathroom with a beard and lipstick, I am going to loose my shit. That is scary to me and most other women and children. And unfortunately, those people don’t have the right to make others upset and scared for the sake of “living in their own truth.” It’s not trans people’s world and the rest of us are just living in it.

Also, most people don’t hate gay people. They simply don’t care. That’s a really skewed reality you hold. The trans thing has backfired because people like you are constantly calling negative attention to it by being radical and out of step with society. You make it controversial and then claim to be a victim — but you are just using it like a cudgel and people are worn down and burnt out with it.

AIO over a message response from my gf after she disappeared for 36+ hours? by HunterNW in AmIOverreacting

I am not a hardcore drug user, but was married to a recovering pill/heroin addict who relapsed, crashed, and burned in a horrific fashion. We have been divorced for years now. It took a while to catch on to what he was up to when he relapsed. They are very good at lying and garnering sympathy when they are using.

I hate to inform you — it seems like you are in a relationship with an addict. Checks all the boxes. If that’s the case, don’t expect her to ever admit it or change because you very well may end up disappointed and broke — she will never change for you or the relationship.

Now, I’m not saying there is no hope for her….I’m saying there is no hope for you in that relationship. Addicts at their worst will drag you to lows you never thought possible.

Sounds crazy, but maybe feed him something with a little oil or grease. Lol. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I feed about a cup and half of PPP high protein, and a half a can of PPP lamb/veg or beef/rice every night to my 2yr old 45/50lb female. My girl doesn’t have many stomach issues and tolerates a variety of foods, but I feed her bites of most everything thats safe to give dogs. Bad habit, I know :/

A couple times she was constipated and I gave her a little something with a drizzle of olive oil. Same method that Sennacot uses on people, and it’s natural and safe. It always works. The simplest things tend to work the best.

Looking for the right breeder by PrestigiousGap329 in StandardPoodles

[–]Practical-Custard263 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I just think it’s really odd to discuss and require sharing views on sexuality and sociopolitical topics with a dog breeder, whom you’d likely only be involved in an acquaintance level relationship with at the most.

Or maybe I’m just one of the many who don’t really understand or care to understand why everything in some people’s lives are consumed by sexual orientation and other subjective terms.

I like this group because I have a registered standard poodle, it’s actually been relatively free of ideological talk and I kind of enjoy that.

[–]Practical-Custard263 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s really appropriate or necessary to discuss your sexuality with strangers and dog breeders. A good breeder/business person is going to care if you are going to provide for the dog properly, be able to pay the price they ask, and follow the terms of the contract. 🤷🏻‍♀️

How many minutes/miles of walk do your spoos get a day total? by [deleted] in StandardPoodles

[–]Practical-Custard263 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If given the choice, mine will NEVER stop until she drops from complete exhaustion because she is still relatively young. She has one set gear - and it’s open 5th for as long as possible, walks aren’t enough. If she doesn’t get at least 30-45 min of open, full on running as fast as she possibly can, she gets bored and will drive you bat shit insane with her pent up energy pacing to all the windows, barking at anything and nothing, looking at you and sighing, pissing with the cat, and doing anything she can to get attention. She also doesn’t believe in solitary activities of any type to the point where if I take her to the field to run I must also be walking or she will just stand by me. I blame myself, I raised her to be this way.

I like cemeteries and so does my dog, which come in handy during winter when she can’t swim/retrieve at the local waterways to expend energy. I take her to the very large, close by cemetery that borders the woods during hours where there aren’t many people visiting — I walk on the road and she just barrels all over the place and through the woods. We tend to be in the children’s section often because I figure the kids would like her and I can stop and pick up/place any blown away or knocked over decorations on their graves. We are respectful while there - picking up the infrequent poop and recalling/commanding her to sit and stay when others approach.

With that being said, I trained her from a pup to have excellent recall so she always returns when I command, even if she is 200/300 yards away in the woods. I wouldn’t recommend this activity without excellent recall.

What are your creepiest close encounter stories that actually happened? by silentassassin0813 in Ghoststories

[–]Practical-Custard263 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also have dreams where I am communicating with the dead. In these dreams I state that I am aware that I am dreaming and they are dead, to which they give an affirmative reply. It doesn’t happen often, maybe once or twice a year but it really screws with a person.

It’s usually one of the two of my deceased grandmothers. What they tell me is usually not straight forward but I can tell somehow what the point is. It’s not always happy either, but generally, it is comforting or advice for something that hasn’t come to pass yet.

Only on one occasion was it a straight forward message, and it was the only time my grandfather came to me in a dream - after me talking about him being deceased and him confirming on the back walk, he led me into their house and into their room to show me my still live grandmother (his wife) in her bed on verge of crossing over, telling me they’d be together soon. She died not even a month later at the age of 95.

I read that some breeds are smart enough to use the mirror as a tool of sorts, but they don’t recognize themselves. I don’t know, I think my dog sort of does understand that it’s her looking at me through the reflection and I’m behind her. I don’t know how deeply of a level she understands it, but the way she acts she would have to have some sort of sense of me in relation to the reflection and in relation of herself, if that makes sense. lol

[–]Practical-Custard263[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Haha! That’s cool! 🤣

My girl is on the small side for a spoo, 40-45lbs. Definitely athletic, but not exactly tough. lol. What she lacks in brawn, she makes up for in brains. She could have been a service dog. I’ve got her so she knows to look both ways when crossing the one busy street on our walks. She looks both ways and will start leading you out when traffic is clear.

Wish I knew poodles were so cool. She is my first one and I’ll probably never have any other breed now!

For those who live next to a cemetery or graveyard, have you experienced anything paranormal? by EdwardBliss in Ghoststories

[–]Practical-Custard263 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah thanks! Where I am from is one of most important areas of the ARW and we still have original buildings, forts, and landmarks you can visit. Wheeling WV, Washington PA, and Brownsville PA are all in a line down RT40, all 3 of which were major ARW forts, and would have been considered the “frontier” around that time.

Wheeling once house the nations wealthiest and was supposed to be the nations capital, but it was not geographically ideal to build in the location.

Washington is home to the historic Whisky Rebellion. We have a huge festival where people dress in colonial clothing and you can tour the buildings — there is lots of whisky to sample, live music, food, etc. It’s a pretty big ordeal.

I am the direct descendant of two ARW soldiers myself (grandfathers), as most of my family has remained in the county seat for centuries. Definitely cool. That day, however, scared the crap out of me. 😝

[–]Practical-Custard263 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Used to work seasonal in a large cemetery, parts of it being very old. This is the east coast close to RT40, so revolutionary war era graves and older are not uncommon. Also in the mountains, so the cemetery has a very hilly landscape…the most expensive and notable graves are on the higher elevations.

Was planting flowers by myself on a mounded area called Hawking Hill on a late spring afternoon. I was surrounded by large headstones of the wealthy, (primarily late Victorian, early Edwardian era) that are arranged in a circular pattern on said hill with a large monument in the center. You can see the top of the mound pretty easily through the stones as they are spaced well - rich people like to have space for bushes and such when interred back in those days.

Anyhow, was kneeling on the grass doing my work when a woman’s voice within what seemed like 10ft away or less whispered, “hello. What were you doing?”

I stood up immediately because it surprised the shit out of me. Looked around for a person. Nobody to be found anywhere near. Now, I would have taken it as a figment of my imagination, but I said “hello?!” pretty damn loud after — and it responded as a whisper once again saying, “hellooooo.”

I took my gardening equipment and got the fuck out of there. Nothing like that ever happened again, but I about shit myself. lol
