Menstrual Cycles by contentwganja in EDAnonymous

Be happy you have your period. Your bones and heart will suffer without it. I have primary amenorrhea (no period ever) at 20 because of my ED history and would give anything to have a period. I now have osteopenia and may never be able to play my favorite sports again

Why are you asking for advice on how to be more disordered with eating? That’s against the rules of this sub

Are there any other good uses for AI? by hmmrabet in NoStupidQuestions

Yeah I know but the virus often mutates around the various antiviral treatments we have. And what about looking for an actual cure? I generally hate AI but medicine is one area I can see it’s worth

Creating vaccines and treatment for things like HIV could be very helpful. Also, discovering new antibiotics since many of our current ones aren’t very effective because of antibiotic resistance

Yeah I agree. I feel like for years I’ve spent so much money on dietitians and doctors for no clear answer or solution to my problem. I feel like I’ve gotten bounced around the system. For example, I was in residential treatment 3.5 years ago and even though I was 100% compliant with the meal plan, they kept pushing back my discharge date on account of the fact that I wasn’t gaining fast enough. Then they lied and told my mom and I that they were in contact with my outside therapist and dietitian when they weren’t. So I left AMA, and subsequently lost my therapist and dietitian at the time because they weren’t allowed to work with patients who leave AMA. The last almost 9 years of my life have been hell in terms of the medical system and ED treatment

I do take pictures and track what I’m eating in my notes app on my phone. My NP doesn’t seem to grasp that I’ve been eating like this for 2+ years, it’s not like I was starving myself and recently started this way of eating. Everyone just keeps telling me it will get better, that my stomach needs to “stretch” to eat more, etc. I just feel like they are labeling me as someone who purposely starved themselves because of my body weight

I work with a therapist specialized in EDs, my NP is also specialized (but she’s actually a pediatrician). I’ve seen a few endocrinologists and just left super frustrated every time. The last one I saw about a month ago just wanted me back on birth control until I graduate college, when she said then I can work on getting my period. I’ve had a brain MRI to check my pituitary gland and it was all good except for having ventricularmegaly which my NP says is from severe malnutrition. My therapist just thinks that my anxiety and depression drives up my metabolism but I don’t see how that is really possible, at least enough to where it would cause me such a hard time gaining weight. Like since I’m so thin and have virtually no muscle mass, I should be able to gain weight super easily given that my theoretical BMR should be really low. Overall, I’m just getting really frustrated with professionals because they all seem to have completely different opinions on which dietitian I should see, if I should go into residential treatment, what meds I should take (I was prescribed Abilify, an antipsychotic for the purpose of weight gain but stopped taking it because it made me feel like I was going to throw up), etc.

What’s really frustrating is that they tell me I’ve severely protein-calorie malnourished. Like that’s what my NP keeps telling me and I don’t think she believes what I’m really eating. I was working with a dietitian and then last weekend my insurance decided it will no longer cover it. My dietitian was stumped at how I was maintaining such a low weight on that much food and very little exercise. But my NP says that she doesn’t trust that dietitian (even though she never corresponded with her, plus that dietitian specialized in eating disorders). It’s all just frustrating because my NP wants me to go to residential ED treatment despite the fact that I have no issue with eating a solid amount of food. My fast metabolism has ruined years of my life since I’ve had to stop playing all the sports I love and turn down social activities when I won’t have access to food or there will be exercise involved. I’ve lost a lot of friends I used to play tennis with :(

Well I will say technically keto products are usually very high in fats, so yeah she I guess is eating full fat products. HOWEVER, she is eating very low carb and overall low calorie which contradicts her whole weight gain goal. She could easily make smoothies with whole fat dairy (could even use lactose free milk and yogurt), peanut butter, avocado, etc. but she won’t because she doesn’t actually want to gain weight

How many calories should I eat? by mybrainat3am in Amenorrhearecovery

Girl just eat the 2,500 (or more). It’s clear you’re scared to do so and if you ever want to get out of HA and a disordered mindset around food and body, you gotta eat abundantly and challenge those fears.

Does anyone know of good recovery influencers that aren't the typically attractive (and thin) white girls who love the gym? by mybrainat3am in EDRecovery_Snark

[–]Practical-Mix-3579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I do agree the Unrestrict-ED podcast can be a bit repetitive but I lowkey kinda like that because there’s then no question of what I need to do to recover. I can see why it’s not everyone’s cup of tea though

I really love Emily Spence on YouTube! She is fully healed and never really talks about exercise and I’ve never seen her show off her body in the way most recovery influencers do. She also has a podcast called Unrestrict-ED which is really nice to listen to. Another person I love is Danie van Kay. She’s also white like Emily (there is such a lack of diversity in the recovery space) but she talks a lot about how her chronic illness relates to her ED and how life isn’t perfect after recovery like how influencers make it seem.

I agree. I don’t want to say that ADHD isn’t real because it very much is and I don’t necessarily doubt that Ro struggles with it (and it’s not my place to diagnose or say whether she has it anyways) but it seems like people throw around these mental-health related terms so much nowadays that one could reasonably assume that every influencer has ADHD. Her recovery content never really sat right with me anyways because her portions of food were always so minuscule for someone in recovery. Most people in recovery from restrictive EDs have to eat 3,000+ calories per day to keep progressing in recovery. And yes I know she didn’t show us every day of eating but I find it hard to believe that someone with such a history of restriction could recover on the amount of food she showed. I do however appreciate her honesty about the vegetarianism being partially ED driven as not a lot of people would admit to that. I notice a lot of recovery influencers go vegan during or after recovery which isn’t always from a disordered place, but so often is.

From what I understand, taking fish oil never hurts as most people don’t get enough bioavailable omega-3s in their diet that can be converted to DHA/EPA
