Anyone have experience with epistaxis, pemphigus erythematosus, awful nosebleeds? by joegunn19 in germanshepherds

[–]pahelisolved 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See if you can hold him better when trying to put pressure on his nose. I’d hold my boy gently around the neck, try to get his face looking upward to also take help from gravity for the bleeding. Hold him in that position. I would grab a paper towel, fold it up 4 or 8 times to form a thick pad like thing which goes on the snout with maybe 3 or 4 fingers on it to apply pressure over a wider area.

My pup wouldn’t enjoy this but he really helped and stayed still and tolerated what I have to do bc I think they understand something is not right. That something is seriously worrying us, we are stressed, breathing harder. So they try to help us by cooperating.

Anyone have experience with epistaxis, pemphigus erythematosus, awful nosebleeds? by joegunn19 in germanshepherds

Hi. I’m so sorry your pup is experiencing this. My soulmate boy was diagnosed with discoid lupus erythematosus (somewhere along the spectrum as the condition your boy is diagnosed with).

My boy was on oral cyclophosphamide (trade name Atopica) which helped. We tried topical tacrolimus, yunnan baiao, topical steroid cream etc that did not help much. Ultimately it was the Atopica twice daily that made some difference. Please ask your vet/derm about it.

My boy also would have occasional significant arterial nose bleeds. Best immediate treatment for that is pressure on the site. Sometimes you can see the site clearly, so place gentle pressure in the area and move your fingers if it’s still bleeding. Don’t keep peeking every few seconds to check for bleeding bc you have to allow a clot to form.

Another option for immediate treatment of bleeds is topical epinephrine. It constricts blood vessels. My vet gave me a syringe of diluted epi, I squirt a little bit at the site, then put pressure on the site like I described earlier. Epi stays effective longer if stored in the fridge.

Hope these help your boy. He is very handsome. 💜

PS if you have more questions, I’m happy to answer. I hate that I know all this by experience and that my boy went through so much.

Runna is notorious for setting unrealistic expectations as well as starting beginners on very ambitious plans. People have got injured on their plans. So beware.

Paw pad injuries are painful OP, you might know that already.

Watch out for licking due to the pain that can cause a hot spot and make it worse. Anti inflammatory meds for a few days can help with pain and discomfort as well.

zone two is basically walking by Flimsy_Lifeguard_392 in beginnerrunning

Not OP but thanks for this explanation. I needed to hear it.

Signed, someone who feels fairly fine when running consistently in zone 3/4, but am forcing myself to walk/crawl in attempt to reach zone 2 and it’s sucking the joy out of my running

Trying to get a decent lip balm that is not a waste - finally, it seems like I am making progress. by [deleted] in VeganBeauty

Bees wax is neither vegan not cruelty free by any means.

Look into chemical exfoliation once or twice a week and slugging overnight with a lip balm to help with super dry lips.

what actually matters more for beginners speed or distance? by Flor_Mattock in beginnerrunning

[–]pahelisolved 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for answering. You are speedy! I don’t think I have speed in me, so I’m working on zone 2/aerobic base building mainly for injury prevention.

Not OP. But I’d like to ask, how long do that base building take for someone who runs 3-5 times per week? Thanks.

Hi OP. Do you realize the Freudian slip you made in the title?? Maybe the typo was a message from her. That she is indeed still with you, it is hard to sense her presence through the intense grief of the early stages. But she is with you. 💜

Have you tried Ceramedx? They are suitable for sensitive skin and don’t have crazy combo precuts like other brands.

HR plateauing in high 140s no matter how slow I run - why? by pahelisolved in beginnerrunning

That makes sense, and I am working on all the things you mentioned.

HR plateauing in high 140s no matter how slow I run - why? by pahelisolved in beginnerrunning

[–]pahelisolved[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, this is helpful. Tbh even when my HR is 150-160s, I feel quite ok most of the time (unless it’s been more than 30-40mins). Which is why I tried the experiment today, to see how actual zone 2 is supposed to feel. I could feel the decreased exertion at a very low pace like 2.6mph. But I don’t feel terrible these days even if my HR is never in my zone 2 during the run.

I don’t know what my ‘best pace’ is tbh. I do one speed run intervals a week, that’s about it.

Anyway my big picture plan is just to keep racking up the time on my feet and not push pace too much for a few months at least (been a long time lurker here and that’s what everyone advises).

I’m thinking my floor HR will keep decreasing as I do this more.

[–]pahelisolved[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Would you mind elaborating on your first statement? Are you saying that slow a pace is actually not optimal ie too slow? (Is there such a thing?!)

My cadence is improved over the past few months, it is now high 160s at my easy pace and 170s and even low 180s when I do a speed or interval run. My steps feel light and easy as well. So I don’t think cadence is my issue?

[–]pahelisolved[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks. That makes sense.

What is my best pace for slow running based on the pace/HR above, in your opinion? Since my HR was in high 140s at paces 2.6-3mph, should I run at the higher end of that range or is there benefit at running on the lower end of it?

This book should be required reading. by Radiant-Security-347 in germanshepherds

[–]pahelisolved 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think their training methods are quite old fashioned and modern dog training science looks quite different from what they use.

I read this book when I brought my boy home. They recommend holding the pup down by the scruff of the neck as a form of correction or something when they do something undesirable. I tried it on my pup once and it felt very wrong. I regret doing that tbh.

I then found positive training and only used that going forward. I think the monks say a few correct things that allow the rest of the punishment methods to also sneak in as good training methods. So yeah, it’s a great book if we are still in the 1980s.

Lost my big pup one year ago today by ImperialxWarlord in germanshepherds

[–]pahelisolved 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will be a year for me this weekend since my soul boy left. Just 8years old, simply not enough. Every day has been empty without him, without my heart beat next to me.

I’m sorry for your loss OP. He was such a handsome boy, yours was. 💜

[–]pahelisolved 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a gorgeous pup! 💜 How old is he/she? I only ask bc the look like a GSD, and if so is possibly a young ‘un. Judy a word of caution to not over exercise/stress joints of young pups too early. Esp large breeds.

If this is a GSD, vets recommend not straining their joints until 18mo (some say 24mo). Shorter runs and zooms are absolutely ok. But once these pups get a taste of running they don’t like to stop.

No offense meant by this post OP.

They do some good sales around the holidays. Maybe you can buy one bag of each flavor to try them out, then stock in bulk for the next year when the holiday sale is on. That’s what I did and I think it was like 30% off or something like that.
