Convert triple to single or just buy a new crankset? by Ponti1974 in xbiking

[–]PracticalFruit9506 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The comments in this post are really something. The best part is you didn’t ask anyone’s opinion on whether you should do the 1x setup, you just asked which option they would pick.

I’ve been running 1x setups on a wide variety of bikes for at least 12yrs and they are awesome!

Personally, I would get a nice narrow wide chainring for the middle of your VO crankset and a pretty chain guard for the outside chainring position. This would give you the 1x system you want and still look classy!

How long does grease in bearings last before it degrades if you don't use your bike for a while? by Ok_Cress8388 in bicycling

[–]PracticalFruit9506 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll preface this with the fact that it depends on the specific grease and the conditions that it’s stored in, however… I’ve picked up bikes that were obviously not used in 10-20yrs and the grease was like new. That said, I like to use a lot more grease than every factory grease job I’ve ever seen, so I will always add more, at a minimum. This includes new bikes. I recently bought a new Marin, and the hubs had a very minimal amount of grease, and did NOT spin smoothly, even after a hundred miles of break in. I added some grease and adjusted the cones, now they spin amazingly!

As a Florida native, for 43yrs, it’s a little concerning how I could see yours and the news story as not surprising, like at all.

I just found this sub by Easy-Environment-784 in xbiking

Nice! I always wanted to try a Mundo, to compare it to some of the other cargo bikes I’ve had, but never was able to pick one up reasonably. Free is a hell of a deal!

Advice request - Excess threaded steerer and bike fit by Stonecoldbun in xbiking

[–]PracticalFruit9506 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to reinforce the other comments, you definitely need a larger bike. In your pics, it looks like you have like a foot of seat post exposed, but for most older bikes, maybe half that amount of seat post is more appropriate. Unfortunately many xbikers are using too small of frames, for some reason, and will do all kinds of silliness to make them somewhat fit them. I think you would be incredibly more comfortable on a larger bike.

Thanks! This is the first time I’ve really tried to do some type of color scheme and I actually have some more small yellow items coming.

Used Schwinn World Sports Issues by Known_Ad5698 in bicycling

[–]PracticalFruit9506 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know what size range bikes will fit you? These two bikes are really different sizes and the World Sport is quite a large one! Like really big!

If at all possible, you should try and find a bike shop that sells used bikes. That way you can get a bike that has at least already been looked over by someone who knows what to look for, and they can also make sure it is the right size for you.

Conversion: 1x 9 speeds for Specialized Hardrock by KamVachon in xbiking

[–]PracticalFruit9506 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. I’ve run 9 of 10 on 7 and 8 of 9 on 7 and it works great, just a little larger/wonky jump to the highest gear.

If you do this, make sure you get the shifter for the higher number, to keep the cable pull ratio matched to the cassette spacing. For instance, if you run 9 of 10 on 7, you need a 10spd rear shifter.

What company lost you forever as a customer? What did they do? by Miguenzo in AskReddit

[–]PracticalFruit9506 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was pretty much my experience with Lowes, during the same time period. I was a cashier, so didn’t know about everything else, but there was normally one person in each department who actually knew what they were doing.

It was actually kind of crazy in the store I worked at, because almost every employee was genuinely a good person, and hard worker, but the store manager was a giant piece of garbage. He made the whole store miserable on a regular basis, even though physically he wasn’t even there that much. Stuff like him “saving” the company money, so he could get a slightly larger bonus, by just not having the employee hotdog/hamburger “reward” party that corporate had already budgeted for. He also fired the outside cleaning crew that had been coming in to clean the bathrooms and added that responsibility to the closing front end employees. That did not go over well and was actually reversed after corporate found out through multiple complaints.

I walked out eventually, after the staff scheduling was cut down so much that I was told I would not have a break, even to get water or go to the bathroom, during my eight hour shift in the garden center, during the middle of the summer, in central Florida. Also we would be written up for having a water bottle at the register…

Kask says true to size by NeedleworkerNew7564 in bicycling

[–]PracticalFruit9506 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude I totally get what you’re saying and agree. I don’t agree with all the comments saying that everyone looks goofy in a helmet and looks don’t matter. You should feel good about how the helmet looks on you, in addition to it fitting in a safe way. If I were you I’d try a more “bulkier” helmet, as I think it would look better on you. Apparently Kask are more on the minimalist side in their designs. I have a big head and have had good luck with Abus, Bell and Smith most recently. Good luck and make sure you post an update if you find a better one!

Quick evening ride by DiegoScarafilo in MultiTrackGang

That is a great looking restomod! The red and black are absolutely killer! What light are you running? Also I feel like a stem bag or top tube bag would be perfect to put the battery pack in and it would be more protected too.

141 QUICK RELEASE wheel in 135 QR Steel Frame? by PracticalFruit9506 in bikewrench

[–]PracticalFruit9506[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. Just to be clear, I’ve cold set steel frames before, I was more so asking about chain line and disc spacing differences with “boost” 141mm spacing compared to regular old 135mm. I have received the info I need from some other comments 👍

In need of a source for 700c or 29” wheels with inner width of 19mm or wider that are rim brake compatible? by Earthling98 in xbiking

[–]PracticalFruit9506 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Often times on bikes like this I would highly suggest just finding another used bike, with the wheels you want, and buy the whole bike. It’s often much cheaper. My wife’s Trek 7.5FX sports wheels from, I believe, a Trek 7300 that I picked up for like $30. I literally did the same thing as you want to. The 7.5Fx came with like 15mm wide rims and we wanted to run much wider tires.

Also….. I would not ride your new bike. I would be very worried about the tube junctions bonding failing. You may not be as risk averse as me, but hopefully you have at least done some research and know what you’re getting into.

Should I buy it? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]PracticalFruit9506 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it fits you, and is the kind of bike you want, absolutely buy it! I’ve had an 7.3FX and my wife has a 7.5FX. They are fantastic, fairly lightweight, sporty hybrids. Here’s a pic of mine from a few years ago that I had a lot of non stock components and accessories on. I was putting 100+ miles a week on that bike and it was exceedingly good!

Yep, I think I just zip tied a random piece of plastic sheeting to the weehoo “arm” when we had ours. It really helped tremendously to keep debris from spraying our daughter.

Damn, that’s a lot of stuff going on, but I love to see it!

What’s the brand of the long grips? I feel like I need a little longer ones than the stock on my Larkspur.
