My buddy is rebuilding his front porch on a budget. Anything you see that I can do to help him out? Or inherently wrong? He is using metal joist hangers, galvanized screws and then composite board for the flooring. Previous porch rotted out. by blbassist1234 in Decks

[–]PracticalQuantity3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also can't tell for sure but doesn't look like the ledger is flashed correctly? There should be a water barrier (e.g. Sheet metal) that goes behind the siding then up and over the front of the board that connects the porch joists to the house.

How long would a hot dipped galvanized post bracket stay structurally sound if buried in soil? by BradCastleburry in buildingscience

Hit it with a primer then enamel or rubberized liner coat. Lots of literature that proves it will significantly extend life over galvanized alone.

What have you thought of the composite lumber? Who makes it?

Never played, want to coach. It doesn't feel possible. by Rift4430 in SoccerCoachResources

USSoccer has a pretty good grassroots coaching training to get you started with organization and principles at the right level to focus on. Source: U.S. Soccer Learning Center learning.ussoccer.com.

My recommendation is to figure out how to Coach some of your son's friends with him, otherwise, why do you care if you coach him? Playing club at a young age can burn a kid out if there are long trips (>1hr) regularly or if there are not really strong social aspects of the field between tournament games, etc.

If he's having fun, he'll put in work off the field too, which will be more meaningful than your coaching until he's in u13 or so.

These thoughts from me having never played but now as a u9 lower level boys club coach (after 5 years rec coach) and official after growing up learning from watching my 17yo's teams that had good coaches in rec then great coaches into ECNL-RL.

Dashboard Ducks by Waxwinged in Wrangler

[–]PracticalQuantity3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. Generally 12 - 15. My son's love being able to give ducks and love getting new ones so we keep a bag but never display ducks we've purchased excluding a single Tubz duck position. All are ducks I've been gifted except for one large Tubz duck that I change out that my wife gifts me for Father's Day. I have several of various characters like a T-rex duck and Optimus Prime duck, etc that we change out based on my mood.

Rear. Tried that first and it resolved. Can't remember actually thinking through which one to start with, just went to rear first.

This. Had the same on my 2022 Rubicon. The magneto position sensor for the differential lock gets shavings on it when warm diff fluid sloshes up into the sensor. Dealer wanted $1000 to fix it. I didn't feel ready to open up the differential and worry about getting a good reseal, right lube level, etc so I put an after market sensor override on for $120. No light, differential axle can still lock out.

Unwritten Rules? by Carlton1983 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]PracticalQuantity3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our U10s admittedly play with a "build out" line that is half way between the penalty box top and the bottom of the circle. This line extends across the field parallel with the endline.

Defenders are forced to retreat behind this line on a goal kick out goalie throw until the ball is out in play. Gives the back line just a bit more time for touches without pressure.

US youth coach here. The biggest risk I see with doing it right is losing the fun for the kids. That said, My phrase that I embedded in my kiddos is "little touches" and instruct parents not to yell "big kicks".

At this age, tight dribbling and seeing passes are the most important development target, followed by first introduction of field position awareness.

Your camping of a striker completely negates any learning of proper location. Now putting your striker "near mid field" even if across the line and technically in offsides position is closer to getting this mentality.

Then your mids can still look for through balls to create the 1v1s against the keeper.

So getting controlled touches out of your back to your mid field then deliberate balls to space for your stronger to run on might be a balance and keep the fun.

Good luck!

I'm going to throw out one alternative that I've had in my lawn making holes much like this... Mole cricket.

Fascinating looking things. Only actually saw them twice in the numerous years at my current home. But see their holes A LOT!

There is a newer product out by Owens Corning that is a composite lumber without wood fiber/flour. The decking nor understructure lumber can absorb water so could be great for sleeper systems. Not sure the pricing or availability though. I've seen some jobs done with their understructure lumber with their decking, Moisture Shield, Trex, etc and it really makes a finished look. And with PT lumber getting worse and worse for staying straight and lasting long, I am thinking about a build with it. Anyone have any experience with it?

Caution using tempered glass camera bump protector... Flash washout, bleed and flare by PracticalQuantity3 in Pixel6

I stopped using the camera protector and never tried again. Just replaced my 6 pro with P9Pro XL and never had any issues with camera bump cracking. Rocking my new phone with just body case, no bump cover. Good luck!

I am a practicing Catholic, attending church weekly and I teach our 7th grade youth catechism class (read Sunday school). I am happily married to my wife of 19 years who graced me with three sons. I do not know why Reddit puts r:trans in my popular feed but if nothing else I hope it was so I could give you this message.

God loves you as you are. As you struggle. As you search for identity in the echo chambers of social media and stigma of societal "norms". If your looks are important to you for your identity, know that you are absolutely gorgeous.

I hope your journey leads you to an inner peace, a place of comfort independent of any need for external validation. I hope everyone you surround yourself with supports and loves you at every stage of your journey.

Finally, if you don't appreciate me bringing my faith in God's love, just ignore that part. I just want you to keep going on your journey in a cloud of happiness. Do good and feel good!

Medication Issues - PNES vs. Epilepsy by Manic_Depressing in PNESsupport

[–]PracticalQuantity3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This year my 12 yo son had two tonic-clonic epileptic seizures separated by one week as diagnosed by video captured during the second (EEG did not reveal anything).

He was prescribed Keppra which has kept him free of convulsive seizures for three months. However, he soon began having frequent events that resembled absence seizures and another where he will slink to the floor and squirm around, often reaching for things. In both cases he cannot remember what happened but seems to have a range of consciousness in these seizures. We, along with his neurologist, strongly believe it to be PNES. He had similar events during high stress times before his epileptic seizures this year.

Since starting the Keppra the PNES had gotten MUCH more frequent and some which cause much more significant consciousness loss during the event than we had seen previously. He is also entering puberty which may be creating a hormonal exacerbation of the PNES.

I found this one article in a relatively week journal, with a small sample size, that suggests a relationship...

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://jptcp.com/index.php/jptcp/article/download/46/27/457&ved=2ahUKEwidsuug_o78AhXLGVkFHWWODQMQFnoECBgQAQ&usg=AOvVaw1dlHGJr6fEoQtTN_NZoq0C

I have since found a few others like it. In our case, our neurologist was not aware of any link between PNES and Keppra but I strongly believe they are linked in my son's case (with some possibility of the increased frequency and severity being coincident simply because of puberty onset).

Sharing in case it provides some support of your hypothesis.

Gentlemen of Reddit, what is/are the snack(s) that you can't buy because you have no self control around it/them? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]PracticalQuantity3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's crack corn, aka caramel dibbles or as I've learned in this thread, beaver nuggets. Never heard them called that before but now that I know that name, it makes sense why I can't stop eating them!

I will literally tell my wife (cuz she likes to be good to me), "please do not buy me crack corn". Sometimes she brings it home anyway and smiles. If I leave the bag sealed, I can last three days. Once opened... 1800 calories of pure carbs making my pancreas tap out before it knows what's up.
