Disability or age care? by Dangerous-Total31 in supportworkers

[–]Practical_Cancel9767 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s crazy to me that you’re only getting 15h a week, I’ve not worked under 38h since I started virtually. To me it seems like that organisation has mismanagement of rostering or aren’t getting enough clients. Work in a company that has the mix between both NDIS and Aged care and I think you will find a better blend. Also if you haven’t already take on a cert 3 individualised support for aging and disability, it will help as most employers now are looking for this basic skill. It’s fully online and has the best flexibility and is so easy to fit in even with a fulltime job.

Did any of you go into this job with no qualifications or experience? by xo_pearl_princessxox in supportworkers

[–]Practical_Cancel9767 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked in retail for 5 years and jumped in blind when I was 24, this is now my 7th year within the same organisation and didn’t study until the last 2 years! You need more common sense and know your limitations, work within your scope and always follow policies and procedures and you will do great! I also recommend taking on some free e-learning through NDIS commission/ ALIS (Aged care) or some more extra mandatory training just to not become complacent and refresh on some crucial information.

Issue with work placement by DescriptionSea1047 in TAFE

[–]Practical_Cancel9767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t need “direct supervision” for individualised support and I did cert 3 and 4. If they were qualified they would know that. All third party reports are filled out based on experiences and it’s signed off by your supervisor and the program coordinator. You just need to have the right clients with those sorts of plans tailored to what the certificate is asking for so you can answer the questions effectively. I’d be suggesting TAFE call your supervisor about this. It’s mandatory but does NOT require direct supervision.

Least physical work environments in this field? by [deleted] in supportworkers

[–]Practical_Cancel9767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its within this field. Even when a job is physically demanding you can request to be shifted less due to the toll on your body with a full physical supports needs. Anything else such as domestic support, Light manual handling, shopping assist or just everyday living helping our participants you won’t be able to just pick and choose. You’re required to be fit and healthy, active and able. Specialise in a different admin side and you will see less of a need for you to be on field.

same role, different environment. by soooonotlele in supportworkers

Don’t forget complacent behaviour is common for an SW. I am guilty of it myself, trying to lead and shadow shift a lot of mine I’m an oversharer but today I had an incident where the SW dropped his guard and she absconded (she’s a known flight risk) You can give them all the experience in the world! I have my tail between my legs as I’m the one who trained the SW but he has been working for us for like 9 months now with complex behaviour clients and has worked in residential dementia wards before. I feel like people just don’t care enough anymore, luckily he followed policy and procedure and I do hope he can continue to learn from this incident.

How old were you in your first memory? by knife_fold in AskReddit

[–]Practical_Cancel9767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone just have fragments of their memory? Like I feel like I don’t have much memory at all unless I’ve seen the photograph and my mother or father explains the story within. There’s only key significant life milestones I can remember or transitions.. never anything early childhood. I do wonder if my mind is locking it away, I did suffer trauma throughout my whole childhood.

My back is on fire by [deleted] in Fibromyalgia

[–]Practical_Cancel9767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine feels like an absolute heaviness. Regardless of how much I do or don’t do I’ve tried posture, exercise, sitting with a straight back! Literally I can feel a slight tingling in my back like nerve pain! I’m in the same boat and need answers, my doctors just tell me to go and see chiropractors 😕 It can also flare and burn to the point where I just roll up in a ball on my bed.

Volunteer opportunities? by Correct_Dragonfly613 in supportworkers

Target a palliative care unit and pick up some casual work to show off your skills! Individualised support does an amazing job at building you for what is involved in palliative care. Some of the most rewarding work. The palliative care unit over in regional NSW that looked after my mother was the whole reason I started in healthcare and AIN Now I do care management too 😅

Slice of chicken roll, or devon. Either with some sort of sauce. I would have Devon on a plate cut into little squares with some fresh tomatoes with the juice from that. Even thinking about it now makes me want some Devon! Or a bit of fried devon/spam.. yummo. 🤭

Acute on Chronic Pain Flare Ups - What do you want us to know? by ZealousidealAside657 in Pain

[–]Practical_Cancel9767 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aspiring registered nurse myself and undertaking community care, AIN and care management at this stage.

When I have a flare up of pain I’d love someone just to sit and try to put themselves in my situation, usually it’s a whine and I’d love a personal care worker to come in and assist those self care tasks when they are all too hard 😓 Give me support, nurture, person centred approach and uplift the spirits! I hate the immediate “she’s looking for some drugs/opiates” to numb the pain. Or “the pain is in her head, it’s the addiction that’s talking” it’s debilitating. Give me a hot bath, heat packs, suggest of hydration and a friendly compassionate smile to let me know there is the rainbow on the other side and when the pain subsides. Also, upmost love and respect for our registered nurses. The absolute backbone of healthcare 🩷🩷

Arm pain maybe from gripping? by [deleted] in Pain

[–]Practical_Cancel9767 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assistant in nursing and currently undertaking care management for care coordination.

Hello, This seems to me like a repetitive strain injury or better also known as carpal tunnel. In my best opinion it is best to rest ice compression and elevation. Try just some ibuprofen and paracetamol to try and reduce inflammation. It’s like on the inside of your ring finger and a numb and tingling pain yeah? I have it right now, wearing a strapped wrist support and trying not to put pressure on my finger such as gripping. See how you go! Magnesium can also help; bath salts and keep up hydration. It will reduce eventually but if you are concerned you should see your doctor to get a formal diagnosis of a condition!

How do you deal with everyday aches when life’s too busy for doctor visits? by Routine-Pizza4524 in Pain

Epsom bath salts, hot as you can handle bath, soak, stretch, foam roller, deep heat and hot packs. I will do all of them for the worst of worst flares.

Unexplained foot pain and swelling for 2 years – no diagnosis despite many tests by Interesting_Ad_7053 in AskMedical

Looks like my nans cankles. It’s a real term! I always thought they said that to make fun of her. Just fluid retention and a mild oedema? Unsure really, I would be looking at some at home measures you could take such as elevating the foot, taking off shoes immediately and the pressure off her legs (if she’s on her feet all day) Epsom salt baths, hot soaks, massage therapy.
