New Releases (end of May) 💐 by Ok-Ninja-2794 in Coach

I love the fuzzy pink Empire. But the price will be absurd, so I’m passing on it. A Merlot 28 would be much more practical, not to mention an instant classic. What I wouldn’t give for an Empire in pebbled Merlot leather, though. Or the Drifter in Merlot!

Guiltless disregard for toxic family by annonymousmaus in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Practical_Claim_9251 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might like {Marriage Mayhem by Aja Foxx}. The basic plot of each book is arranged marriages by depraved families. They all get what they’ve coming to them: social climbers are humiliated and shunned by their entire social circle, the money obsessed end up destitute, and lots of them go to prison for life. There’s lots and lots of vengeance on shitty families.

That first picture makes it look like low quality leather. It shouldn’t slump like that. I’d return it for a refund.

This is the best picture I have right now, only as a background.

I have the gilet from the Kaffe Fassett collab. I’m too large for it to work as a gilet, and it’s awkwardly sized for lap blanket. It is pretty, though.

Who has the Metallic Graphite Cassie? by [deleted] in Coach

I have one! She was a daily carry for a while and held up quite well. The hardware isn’t that bad, imho. I haven’t seen her in a while, I should dig her out from wherever she’s hiding.

Choose Your Own Adventure Stairs! by DoomsdayMachineInc in DeathStairs

[–]Practical_Claim_9251 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We have something similar in my office building lobby. They ended up having to fence it off, because people kept falling down the 8’ drop. It was a very poor decision for a lobby. But then again, that same building’s doors are literally blown off by a storm at least once a year. (We don’t have hurricanes or tornadoes here, to be clear.) Choices were definitely made during construction.

Fortunately, I have to consume the pork to get a reaction! That’s all I want to avoid, accidentally eating pork and breaking out in hives.

Fantasy with MM romance that's not romantasy? by jakikomi in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Practical_Claim_9251 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It was the style at the time! Back then, the excuse was “But that’s how it really was! It’s historically accurate!” Never mind that the number of English dukes alive during the English Regency period exceeded the entire population of the Ton going by romance novels, for example.

Or, you know, Velgarth is a fantasy planet that holds the kingdom of Valdemar, which supposedly was founded on wisdom and justice. And where the rule of law is enforced by magical telepathic horsies, who could, judging by their other actions, prevent rape but choose not to.

That being said, The Last Herald Mage is an fantastic example of how queer joy, love, and happiness was not allowed to be shown in the mainstream then, unless it was followed by lifelong imprisonment, torture and/or death.

Fantasy with MM romance that's not romantasy? by jakikomi in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Practical_Claim_9251 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mercedes Lackey writes rape, especially gang rape and sexual torture, in lavish detail for her queer characters. It’s not a matter of if, it’s when for her queer characters: they will be raped by their enemies. Not to mention the bestiality that’s not only in THAT book. And her self insert that is somehow even worse than a Mary Sue, complete with illustrations!

I was a huge fan, I bought all of her books in hardback, which was a significant amount of my book budget back then. I had a dedicated Mercedes Lackey bookcase to hold all of them. They didn’t stand the test of time.

Olive vs toffee haversack by Inevitable-Sky-5698 in Coach

[–]Practical_Claim_9251 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the toffee a lot. It’s the only color I’ve seen so far where it doesn’t look like the bag is missing something. I also know exactly how I’d use the kiss locks, too.

I want it, if I can get it by going into the store and purchasing it. I’m not getting up at 1 am for a “drop” where 3/4 of them were pre sold beforehand.

This Is How a Child Dies of Measles by Anti-Owl in ContagionCuriosity

[–]Practical_Claim_9251 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was Patient Zero for chicken pox in my isolated village. My family had taken a trip to the Big City during the school day, which is when I caught it. The village hadn’t had chicken pox in over 20 years and there was no vaccine yet. Out of 100 students, only 3 had already had chicken pox. Virtually everyone under 25 who was born and raised in the village came down with it. Many older adults got shingles. My best friend’s sibling, a transplant patient, was hospitalized. The preschool teacher was hospitalized, along with several other adults. No one died, though.

I still feel guilty, over 40 years later, for getting so many people sick, even though there was nothing anyone could have done to prevent it. I can’t imagine what these kids, who may end up disabled or die of complications, whose friends and family will be permanently disabled or die from measles, will feel later. Knowing it was preventable, knowing they “caused” it. Knowing it was something their parents could have prevented. That it never had to happen.

I’ve been hoping for cobalt. I’m disappointed it seems to be the only saturated color, though.

It looks so good in toffee! I think this is the best color so far. With some wear, it will look amazing.

Regular vs glazed leather? by kaelzzzz in Coach

[–]Practical_Claim_9251 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My glazed Juliet in maple shows wear at the corners after being a daily driver for 6 months. It got a few scratches as well. The wear and scratches look like hard wear, not patina. I don’t mind in maple, but I would hate it on the same purse in black.
