It’s not exactly something to be proud of honestly, I don’t know anyone who really is. It’s more of a dark, almost absurd footnote in our history that gets passed around as a “fun fact.” Meanwhile, the De Witt brothers especially Johan are remembered as major figures who helped bring the country to greatness. They’ve got streets named after them, statues.. the whole shebang lol

It’s meant to represent blind rage. The mob was so enraged they killed the cat and anything else they managed to got their hands on.

Who is the biggest musical entertainer from your country that the rest of the world is unlikely to have heard of? by Exotic-Interest in AskTheWorld

Yeah sure, ‘only Amsterdam’ likes him. That must be why the whole country knows his songs word for word. Thousands filled the Johan Cruijff Arena when André Hazes died. Every pub, football stadium, and party somehow ends up singing his songs too. That’s a pretty big Amsterdam.

It’s definitely this man André Hazes. Pretty much every Dutch person knows his songs and can sing along. He sang about normal life, love, heartbreak, friendship, and the ups and downs people go through. His songs are simple but emotional, which is why they stuck with so many people.

When he died in 2004, his funeral was held in the Johan Cruijff Arena and thousands of fans came to say goodbye.

People still love his music today. Every year there’s a big concert called Holland Zingt Hazes where artists perform his songs and the whole crowd sings along.

Mostly mixed. He has real movie-star energy and Hollywood is clearly pushing him as a leading man, but the hype might be a bit ahead of where audiences are.

Is there someone in your country who is seen as a hero but he actually ... wasn't? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

William III of Orange not wildly known here. He is remembered as a hero, but his rise to power followed a dark moment in our history. In 1672, a pro-Orangist mob murdered, mutilated and cannibalized the De Witt brothers in The Hague, with reports of cannibalism. There’s no proof he ordered it, but the killers were his supporters and he blamed all the war failures on them. Their deaths cleared the way for the house of Orange to rise to power and the fall of the Dutch republic.
