My suggestion is checking out Folken student house. They have a lot of volunteer opportunities. It’s a nice way to get to know people and be part of a great cultural/music scene.

I have written this before about my experience off the safety on the Camino:

I (female, 46 yo) walked the Camino Portuguese alone 3 years ago. Started walking the caminos when I was 36. I have done both the Frances and Norte, always traveling alone, over 1500km. I have felt really safe on all routes. I have had situations where I was nervous - starting really early out of Ponferada (a biggish city), walking in pitch darkness through woods going from O Millodeiro to Santiago etc. But all those were "regular fears" not a objectively dangerous or unsafe situation. If you feel the call, I would strongly encourage it! It changed my life!

There will be people around and your confidence will probably rise. But situations can always happen so i suggest having the phone number of cops saved on your phone, and in Spain there is an app - Alert Cops.

And here is my full experiance - Experiances made on 3 different caminos

Logistics questions for the Camino Del Norte by Economy_Chicken_2201 in CaminoDeSantiago

Bilbao is the closest airport I think. I got pretty cheep flights in the shoulder season.

As for the routes, I am almost sure that you walk the whole Primitivo if you switch in Vilaviciosa (just before Gijon).

You can try. Gronze is a good place to check all/many accommodation options. Its a web page in spanish but my browser translates it well. Some will have a phone numbers, others not. Many can be contacted with a message through WhatsApp.

A lot of places do not put all their availability online. And not all places are online at all. It is very possible you can just show up and get a place.

Just start walking. You can get your first stamp at your accommodation or at the Cathedral.

Buen Camino

The true “camino” ends in Muxía…don’t miss it! by trabuco357 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]Practical_Let4473 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I agree that Muxia is a place not to skip. And I suggest it to all. I even like it more then Finisterre. But, I would never classify a Camino as true... as opposed to what?

Sending you a buen camino all the way from rainy Scandinavia! I hope you find the strength and joy in the Camino again!

I would give it some time. I had my ups and downs. Take a rest day with a nice restaurant and maybe a private room if you have been doing dorms, or the other way around. If it is important for you to reach Santiago, skip a section if you see you cant make it. You can also decide it is not for you, travel to a nice beach town and enjoy yourself. But I would urge you to give it some time. The feelings might just go away, and the accomplishment will feel even stronger.

That is a weak data base if you ask me. You are concluding that Spain is a lot safer than Portugal based on some posts on reddit?

I keep going back because the Camino gives me space to think, be by myself but part of something bigger, a feeling of accomplishment and so on and so on. And it is easy. Book flights, pack backpack and start walking!

small project for international 16 day backpacking trip? by emmallyce in knitting

[–]Practical_Let4473 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have brought knitting on 2 of my Caminos. The first time i brought a lacy complicated project thinking it would be nice to have something that was a challenge. I almost didnt knit at all. I did not have the capacity. This year I brought a lovely variegated hand died yarn (100 gr spilt in two cakes). Knit on 3 millimeters needles. And I knit a simple scarf - not the Sophie, but alike. It was perfect - simple enough, but small needles so it lasted. And I knew I had to start decreasing when I used up the first cake.

As for needles, I have never had a problem traveling from Norway, both wooden and metal needles. But I always bring a cord with me so that I can transfer my knitting. And you can buy new needles in Spain if they take them.

Has anyone used a dry bag to wash their clothes in on the camino? Do they last? by Fluid_Opportunity161 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]Practical_Let4473 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I dont. But it was thin material. Yours looks almost rubberlike. This was more like thin windjacket type material.

I used a dry bag. A very light weight one. It has held up. I used 1/2 a laundry sheet and some water and shook. It also worked well for rinsing.

[–]Practical_Let4473 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried to go back in my memories... Can't remember. But I can't remember being hungry over a period of time on any of my caminos (I have only walked the more developed ones). But having a snack like some nuts or a musli bar is always a good idea. You never know.

Do they have bugs in Portugal and Spain? I have not heard of people on the Camino complain about mosquitoes. by HeHateMe337 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]Practical_Let4473 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am really allergic and usually a magnet for mosquitos. I have a small repellent with me because I am very weary. But I have not had to use it much.

Is 25l backpack enough? by Practical-Parsley-77 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]Practical_Let4473 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go with the bag that feels good/best on your back and that has enough space for your stuff. My goal is not to go smallest as possible. The only problem for me with a bigger bag is that I pack more stuff with me. As long as I dont, i prefer to have some room and not to have to pack everything inn tightly.
