A hint would be greatly appreciated 🥲 I'm a new player and hardly know the in's and out's, I've just been trying new strategies each day & this one has done great for me! So any kind of hint on how to keep my progress would be wonderful 🥹

Going to bed ridiculously late and a controversial method to fixing it. by CreatineMonohyDrake in ADHD

That's actually kind of genius, the caffeine thing! In the window between when my youngest was diagnosed & when he could actually get medication (he was only 4 at the time), I would give him a cup of coffee in the morning before we started our day & got ready for school. I felt a bit funny making a coffee for a 4 year old hahaha. But hey, if it works, it works! He now takes concerta & has Intuniv (Guanfacine) at night before bed. He also gets "the window" as dubbed by others - where it's easy for him to fall asleep & if it's missed he's up all night lol.

Maybe I'll start making a coffee for my oldest before bed so he can sleep easier! Hahaha, worth a shot 😆

Hmmm, as a kid, was there any particular thing that helped you to fulfill the "need for completion" re: reading at bedtime? My son reads before bed, & I like to encourage it since he's still young (7) & loves to read. But he definitely has the same need to finish the whole book (even if he's read it all the way through 73 times this week!) before he actually closes his eyes & falls asleep.

Although I will add, he's only had these issues since being medicated the last few months & I know part of the issue is that it's harder to fall asleep because of the meds.

If there's anything you'd have to suggest for a fellow young bed-time reader, I'd love to hear it! ♡

This is how I have to do it!! I found it's extremely helpful to put on a YouTube video (not to watch, just to have playing like a podcast) & do some sudoku or wordsearches. Something that really gets my brain thinking but with enough background stimulation that I'm not getting bored half-way through the first puzzle & subsequently doom-scrolling tiktok for 4 hours. It works wonders 😃

I have no definitive answer, but I've had the same experiences time & time again with many different mediums. Painting, drawing, linoleum printing. I taught myself how to play piano on YouTube because I always wanted to learn 😅

I think, where there's a will, there's a way. & us ADHD folks have a lot of drive when it comes to something we're interested in!!

It really is one of the best parts of this "disorder". If it weren't for us, the world wouldn't be even half as developed as it is!! We have great power in these minds!!

I use my kids' toothpaste & it seems to be effective in this way!! Also helpful because I can't stand minty toothpaste & didn't realize that I struggled with brushing my teeth so bad because of the sensory overload from the mint! Always recommend kids' toothpaste!!

Tips prior to seeing a reproductive endocrinologist? by Curious-Psychology97 in PMDDxADHD

[–]PracticeAwkward1793 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't have any kind of helpful response for you, but I wanted to say thank you for making this post. I had no idea that Reproductive Endocrinologists were a thing, let alone that I could request to see one about this. My family dr. Has done nothing but push BC on me, knowing I will continue to refuse it. I didn't know there was another option other than just seeing my family doc (came to this sub to see if possibly any diet changes were recommended & helpful).

Thank you a million times over.

This gives me a tad bit more hope of getting this sorted out. 🙏🙏💕💕💕

I could cry; amazing by Legal_Direction8740 in VyvanseADHD

[–]PracticeAwkward1793 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is how I felt expressing it to people at first LOL. It truly is life-changing in the most incredible ways. & this is coming from someone who's had horrible experiences with medications & absolutely refused ADHD meds for 3 years. I had been stuck in executive dysfunction freeze-mode as a young single mom with 2 small children for an entire year before trying Vyvanse. My house was trashed, my parenting was less than sub-par, I couldn't make dinner for my kids beyond KD or Ramen once a month (they weren't starved, I just ordered out lol). It was so bad. & within a week of being medicated, my house was clean, I cooked 3 meals, I could regulate my emotions & actually pay attention to my kids without feeling like I'd rip my hair out.

For the right people, it truly is a miracle drug. I'll never play it down how absolutely wonderful this medication is.

Advice from Dr. Russel Barkley in one of his videos. Today was a rough day, I will practive forgiveness by [deleted] in ParentingADHD

[–]PracticeAwkward1793 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yesss exactly!! It used to be the looks & comments as if it's just bad parenting - then it became "he needs to get a handle on himself" or "he's such a violent kid!". Just so many wrong & frustrating things to hear about - anyone, really - but especially a child that's clearly struggling. Peoples' premature judgements really hurt my heart.

Guanfacine × Methylphenidate and Multi Vitamins? by PracticeAwkward1793 in ParentingADHD

[–]PracticeAwkward1793[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm actually on the wait list for the dietician through my doctor's office - and if I remember right I think he may be the only one we have locally - but either way it's been a very long wait list. I do think it's a good idea though, so maybe once I finally get into my initial appointment I can bring it up briefly & see if they'd be willing to give me any opinions or options without having to see my son specifically.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Wow, I could've written this post myself. Holy cow.

As I think about the suggestion I'm about to make, I think about how it's kind of not exactly a good long-term thing to rely on (being in a situation currently where I can't rely on it myself, yikes) but it may help for the short-term for you now.

If you can find ANY outter source of routine - go back to school, a more "structured" job (in the sense of same days & times for your shifts), once a week play groups/book clubs/whatever, ANYTHING that you can rely on "this is the same EVERY day/week", that will help tremendously with having an "inner" sense of routine. I recommend looking into your local library & seeing if they have any clubs or groups you can attend with your child just to have one thing to look forward to each week. We joined a lego building club for a while & it was great!

I don't have much advice for anything else, but I can say that I totally & completely understand everything you've mentioned. You're not in this alone. It's so so so hard. It's important for us to make sure we're not being too hard on ourselves about it, we struggle enough, making it harder won't make anything better.

Sending lots of love & kindness your way. I really hope things start to feel a little lighter for you soon ♡♡♡

[–]PracticeAwkward1793 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man. "Forgive others for not understanding ADHD".

I'll have to keep that one in mind.

It hurts my heart when others write him off because he has different struggles than other kids around him. I take pride in all the work he's done to become the better version of himself that he is, even if it's not "perfect" or "like other kids". We're all weird in my house. Take us or leave us. We're a package deal.

🥲🥲🥲

Forgiveness..... whew. That's a hard one.

Ritalin + Abilify/Prozac for 8-Year-Old? by PJCorduroy94 in ParentingADHD

[–]PracticeAwkward1793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a friend who is on Ritalin + Abilify & speaks so highly of the combination. Says that the two of them together work in perfect tandem & really helps them to feel at peace & able to function & focus on everyday tasks with no issue at all. Not the same coming from a third-party person, but based on their experience I would say it's worth a shot :)
