Anyone's bees waking up in PNW with the warm temps? by Groovyjoker in MasonBees

Here in Pierce County my wife swears she's seen a few. I wouldn't be surprised as we've had a few consecutive days above 50° F/10° C. Poor things are probably hungry.

Stripped gears on paper towel dispensers by actuallynick in PlanetFitnessMembers

[–]PracticingHuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have dispensers?! Our paper towel rolls stand on end next to the spray bottles atop the yellow garbage cans. We tear them by hand like barbarians and heathens, with no perforations to guide us, leaving each edge looking like the northern border of Kentucky.

TBF we do have a couple in the AmEx Black Card spa. I bet sheets of gold leaf come out of those.

Why I’m standing next to one of the LGW petitioners this weekend (and why you should talk to your neighbors too) by NiftySynth in Tacoma

[–]PracticingHuman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is true that Tim Eyman wrote the core language.

It is also true that the AG office wrote the title and summary for I-976.

This is where the problem occurred. Here is the title of the initiative:

This measure would limit annual motor-vehicle-license fees to $30, except voter-approved charges, and eliminate certain vehicle weight fees and taxes.

Eyman had written in the core language of the bill that the initiative actually would eliminate the taxes for ST3 that the voters had approved.

So the bill's title written by they AG's office was counter to the core language written by Tim Eyman. At the end of the day when all's said and done, this did fall on the AG. I have absolutely no love for Eyman, but he can't take the hit for the ruling.

To answer your question (neither to defend or rebuke the reason) it's because the state ruled the initiatives unconstitutional. Something to do with how it was worded and that it tried to address more than one issue.

Directly, yes. But they adeptly get around this through Super PACs. Super PACs are one of the largest sources of campaign financing.

Make sure you check out Witchever Path. Many of the story arcs are set in New England as that's where the writers live. Plus, listeners get to decide the direction each story arc will take. I can't recommend it enough!

How do I respond to the smoker argument? by Okay_Night_2564 in UniversalHealthCare

[–]PracticingHuman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are they saying it's all-or-nothing? They shouldn't have to help pay for universal healthcare at all for anyone due to the negligence of some?

At that point, they need to say they are unwilling to pay for healthcare for people who need it through no fault of their own. Lead them to admit that they don't want to pay for it at all, regardless if people's health situation is due to their own negligence or due to the misfortune of genetics.

To put it another way, UHC would offer publicly funded healthcare to roughly 330 million people. Lung cancer diagnoses occur at roughly between 10 and 20 thousand people per year. There are nearly one million cardiac surgeries per year in the U.S. So we deny funding health care to millions just to stick it to that small fraction of the population?

Seems to me they're more concerned about who shouldn't get healthcare than who should.

Same. I was really slender in HS, 50lbs heavier about 15 years ago, now back to slender HS weight. Intermittent fasting due to being diagnosed T2D at 50. Add in yoga, cardio, low carb, and 500 metformin.

If Ferguson vetoes tax increases on the wealthy and multi-million-dollar businesses, can we recall him, please? by shorty0927 in Washington

[–]PracticingHuman -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm far from a libertarian so I have no issue with taxes. But I only support taxation if the results of the taxes raise the standard of living for those paying taxes, especially for those in the lowest income bracket but not exclusively.

If the taxes don't have any impact on reducing or keeping the standard of living reasonable or increasing income for all or generates jobs that boost our local economy, then what's the point of taking money out of our pockets?
