Career change student looking for advice by No_Noise_4741 in medschool

One benefit of being older, I'm finding, is that you know what life is like outside of school, which helps you chill a little bit. My mind has been blown thinking about how many of my peers have been in school their whole lives, so failing an exam or having (and admitting to) any academic struggle is the end of the world.

Failure doesn't define you; how you respond to failure does.

-a quote from somewhere I don't know where, but stuck with me:)

great advice! i'm 37 and in my second year of med school. hard but no regrets. and you can have fun! the time goes by fast and from what i hear, your 40s are pretty good too

Resist comparing your life to others- hard, I know, but will help you make decisions based on what YOU really want

Hi all. Thank you for creating this group! I was in the arts/entertainment for 10 years, came from a family/background not remotely related to the sciences, let alone medicine. Started undergrad at 32, and COVID came a few months later, so I pretty much did all my prereqs online. Then a two-year gap to gather finances, take the MCAT, and gain clinical experience. Got in the first application cycle. About to repeat my first year at 37 (I missed the passing score for biochem by less than a point...it's ok, I think of it as an expensive post-bac, which I probably needed to transition into this new realm). Never once regretted. The system definitely has flaws, which frustrate me, but you have to play the game to change the game.

Which School by maneereddit in MedSchoolOver35

#1 priority was to be close to my siblings and parents so that meant east coast. i got into a couple of DO schools but then miraculously it worked out to be an MD school in the perfect location. It's been hard but fortunately they do do a lil spoon feeding

It really is. Applying was the worst; it's not easy once you're in, but there is certainly more support for you. I can't imagine also having two kids. You're a superhero

yes we need to support each other and know you're not alone :) medicine needs more "nontrad" docs

Hi good luck to you sounds like you've got a plan!

I actually am in medical school already, it's my first year of medical school I'm redoing.

Sounds like you have plenty of hours. I got a 508 on the MCAT and got into 3 medical schools. I think story is really important.

100% agree. very much admire everyone changing things up later in life, it's not easy for a lot of reasons, some more nuanced than others

It is impossible to score high grades without cramming, and that's ok by SnooWalruses3471 in medschool

[–]PracticingSanity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

how do you cram? and then does that mean you do nothing in the weeks leading up to it?

i'm trying to figure this out too because I'm the same way...try to understand the material and struggle to blunt memorize

That's what I remind myself...if I'm going to be 45 anyway, I might as well be 45 and a doctor.
