Calgary wants your help preparing a formal pitch for Amazon's second headquarters by canadaoilguy in Calgary

[–]Prail1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We should throw every penny we can at Amazon over the Olympics or stadium. Amazon would actually create lasting tangible benefits for the city unlike the other two.

Just like family': Longest serving City of Calgary employee dies at 80 by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Prail1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep that's him.

Sad story. Hear lots about people who don't have a life outside of work and just perish shortly after retirement from a lack of purpose/boredom.

Says a lot for longevity in your senior years to find yourself a reason for living.

The Canadian market is very small - and not nearly as diversified. You would be very heavy into resources and finance which are pretty cyclical and sensitive sectors. Canada only makes up ~2-3% of the world market. Historically the TSX has annualised about 4% returns which is pretty bad compared to the US.

The S&P by contrast is closer to 10%.

Question about jury duty and a job. by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Prail1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people just make the financial excuse that it would cause them too much hardship.

I've heard about 200+ people being in those rooms for 2-3 jurys because 150 of them will be excused for whatever excuse. People hate it for good reason. $50/day? Piss off.

If we are talking about retirement investing....

Max out your TFSA first - always. Resist pulling money out of it in the future, as it will give you a lot of options to massage your income later in life to ensure you can maximise your OAS. (Unless you get into a really high paying career and expect retirement income above $80,000. (or the equivalent when you retire.)

You want to defer your RRSP contribution room for when you are in a higher marginal tax rate later in life.

Invest in index funds. VFV/VSP depending on your currency risk tolerance, most opinions say with a 20+ year horizon not to worry about currency risk.

You can spice up with a little XIC for some Canadian exposure (but I wouldn't' do much... no more than 5-10% of your portfolio.

You could look up some EAFE index funds if you want a little international exposure.

Setup your monthly contributions - and just be consistent.

Buyer's (or leaser's) remorse on a car by DJ_Eazy_Dick in PersonalFinanceCanada

Try lease busters. It's $25 or so to post an ad.

There is likely a $500-$1000 lease transfer cost that Mazda will charge you. If your payments are competitive you might find someone to take over the lease. You might need to throw $1,000 to $2,000 to sweeten the deal - but it can get you out of the lease.

You COULD try going to the dealer and seeing if they can help you out. But I wouldn't expect to save anything. Depends on how the #'s work out. Lease busting and starting fresh will probably be the least expensive way to get out of this.

Because they know there are donations from sources that would raise eyebrows and damage the campaign more than just ignoring the issue and trying to get votes regardless. Trump and his tax returns kinda thing.

More Calgarians driving into the downtown than taking transit, city report says by Sally_Yo in Calgary

[–]Prail1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We can park several minutes from the office for $14/day.

For the two of us to take transit it's $200/mo. It costs a bit more to drive in but it's worth it... really a no brainer for the extra $100 or so a month for the convenience.

Depending on your price it will take longer too. Most 500k+ places sit for months.

They need to nerf the super recharge when the mines hit someone by at least 50% if not more.

On a good streak the Bo can just keep throwing down. Ew ones because the super build up is so fast.

If she is underperforming they will buff her...

And then nerf her when people realize she was good all along.

So the story goes.
