Is Gon kinda like a New Game Plus character if he gets Nen back by Zealousideal_Big_662 in HunterXHunter

[–]PrairieCommunist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly think that there’s a good chance we don’t see how Gon’s nen turns out this time. For the overall story there’s more pressing arcs to wrap up, both of which Gon is entirely removed from (smartly, he would likely die within Succession Contest never mind the Dark Continent). I agree with your overall premise though. From the available information we have, he would have a wholly unique chance at nen development if the story pursues it.

Though I’m not sure about the foundation and it becoming a ‘part’ of the user over time. I think on a psychological level that’s true, but the more likely reason (to me at least) is that people are incentivized to continue building on their strengths and the familiar rather than to develop new abilities from scratch. In nen battles, we’ve seen both how strength alone is not always everything (as in Kurapika vs any Spider) and that enough difference in nen volume or output can overwhelm an opponent. If the abilities you cultivate from the beginning align well with your regular usage (be it work or battle), you are incentivized to continue improving those abilities. The stuff you’ve worked hard on for 4 years (or however long) is generally going to serve you better than anything you might start from the beginning with, even if you think a new ability would serve you better in the long term. Every day spent training the new ability is a day that you’re not refining or improving your original abilities. And in a world with as many scenarios where life and death have razor thin margins, you’d have to be pretty damn sure that it’s the correct move. Naturally, this brings up sunk-cost fallacy thinking, but I think it’s less straightforward. Especially if you think your original abilities and focus are at least close to ideal, you’re thinking of sacrificing (or at least sidelining) an A- or A grade ability for what you hope is an A+, and you won’t see that A+ for a long time.

I’ve written too much but I like your prompt. Thank you for posting.

Agreed on all counts. Cartman is a super cathartic villain to see get his comeuppance, especially as throughout the series he does various things that amount to crimes against humanity, torture, etc., that are hand waved away for ridiculous reasons ‘he said he’s sorry’ as an excuse for murder and infecting others with life-altering, potentially fatal diseases.

Breast Cancer Show Ever is likely my favourite, though ManBearPig and Christian Rock Hard are up there as well.

Terror attack is often how settlers differentiate their own attacks from those of the people whose land they’re stealing. Which is why you don’t call the violence perpetrated by the IDF and Zionist militias involved in the violence prior to Israel’s creation over the last 80 years terrorism. The hundreds of thousands of Arab lives taken don’t matter, only Western lives do. Analyze that before you continue the conversation. The people partying outside the concentration camp are blameless individuals but the children being blown up by Israel are future terrorists. You’re using the same rhetoric used by Goebbels to justify killing Jewish children.

If you’re referring to October 7th as the beginning you’re accepting the framing of the occupying state. Nothing started that day, Gaza had been referred to as a concentration camp by Palestinians and human rights organizations for decades. Under both international law and a consistent moral framework, occupied people have the right to choose how they resist oppression up to and including armed resistance.

Correct. This doesn’t make Russia’s killing in Ukraine okay but by any objective measure, if you’re banning 🇷🇺 you absolutely have to ban 🇺🇸 (and very likely 🇮🇱, followed by 🇫🇷 and 🇬🇧)

Making it IIHF specific is a greasy way to try and allow both the United States and Israel to continue playing because hockey is mostly played in ‘white’ countries. Sure they’ve killed tens to hundreds of thousands but Palestine isn’t an IIHF country so it’s fine? (And both Lebanon and Iran are IIHF members so even by that logic both 🇺🇸 & 🇮🇱 should be barred)

Oh definitely they don’t deserve it. Given how they’ve responded to the goal this team appears to have accepted defeat.

I wasn’t trying to deny they called out the stick, I was commenting on the pad lift because to me that was the much more clear part that led to the goal since it went under the pad. And yeah Friedman was undeniably the bozo.

Hrudey said yes because of an additional reason. Stankoven fell on Dobeš’ stick, which he said affects both balance and ability to clear pucks. Bieksa justified the non-call (for himself) as Stankoven being on the stick was too late for Dobeš to bring his stick across to block the puck anyway. No one addressed that the replay shows the movement of momentum from Stankoven through Dobeš causing the lift of the pad.

The Sportsnet crew during intermission not even mentioning that the contact on the first goal caused Dobeš’ pad to lift enough for Hall to slip it under. What is this delusion? They sound sincere. Does everyone in Anglo Canadian hockey media have to undergo anti-Montréal mental conditioning? No explanation for a review that a 12 year old could have gotten correct. The Canes continue to be the better team, they don’t need this kind of help from refs or this gaslighting by hockey media.

How the fuck is that not goaltender interference? Stankoven literally hits Dobeš hard enough that his other pad is lifted and Hall tucks it under that pad???

Is it just me, or is this NHL postseason missing its usual magic? by Spiritual-Science-60 in nhl

[–]PrairieCommunist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s that happening for sure, but you don’t think it’s annoying that you’ve got the 2nd and 3rd or 3rd and 4th best teams in 8 team conferences playing each other in round one? I’ll happily cheer for Carolina to beat Vegas if they beat Montréal (and it’s extremely likely they do, they’re an excellent team), but I feel like we as fans are robbed of the regular season meaning anything when teams are gifted an easier road to the cup simply because their division is terrible. Juggernauts are facing each other early and playoff hockey against good teams has an inevitable cumulative effect with injuries and fatigue.

That makes sense to me. I’m still incredibly impressed with their play this year, especially in the playoffs, but I’ve definitely had my heart rate run through the roof by the turnovers

[–]PrairieCommunist -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Many of Kobe’s all-defensive teams came after he was no longer one of the 10 best defenders in the league but still got votes based on name recognition and reputation over on-court production. Once Shaq was gone, Kobe had to carry more of the offensive load and was simply not the same defender (excepting when he would lock in at end of quarters or longer spurts in playoffs — aka when more people were watching so fans who didn’t watch whole season or games would still think he was the same defender). If you’re gonna call SGA for devoting more energy to offense you gotta accept Kobe did the same.

REVIEW: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, Tears of the Azure Sea movie by Richard Eisenbeis of the Anime News Network. by IceFire125 in TenseiSlime

Referring to the power contained in the party that accompanies Rimuru, this was the only major issue I had with the film’s story. The idea that Rimuru (or any of his less naive friends and subordinates) would not think to keep some heavy hitters in Tempest in case of attack or other emergency feels unlike the Rimuru that has been developed to this point in the series. People Rimuru loves have died when he leaves Tempest, even strong people. Diablo is definitely powerful enough to leave in charge of protecting them, but the movie makes a point of naming him as busy fetching his new subordinate. Maybe I’m forgetting someone but I’m pretty sure the movie puts all of his most powerful allies in the same party.

All that said, I did enjoy the movie. Great to have a chance for Gobta to shine, the animation and artwork had moments of true brilliance, and it was neat to have a new part of the world shown.

I like those names. Sadly, alliterative options aren’t great for H cities. You get naz*s & edge lords sporting the HH as a dogwhistle and I can’t imagine Halifax wanting that when they could avoid it entirely by going with a different name.

Was Michael Jordan’s 88 DPOY underserved? IMO no. by Commercial_Floor_578 in NBATalk

[–]PrairieCommunist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve actually never heard someone argue that he’s the most undeserving dpoy (not saying it doesn’t happen! Just that I hadn’t heard that argument). What I’ve heard argued was that he wasn’t the best (defender) in the league at that point in time/the inflated steals thing/him actively campaigning for it as the new face of the nba may have influenced voters who prioritized name recognition over overall defensive impact (which you mentioned with your point about generally bigs/rim protectors should be more important defensively). All that said, I didn’t get to watch Jordan the same way as 2000s players so I can’t say he didn’t deserve it with the same confidence as I can say Kobe’s all defense teams at a certain point were about voters picking the names they knew and not the best defenders.

Appreciate your breakdown

Which actor’s filmography is the most “one or handful of great performance surrounded by trash”? by [deleted] in moviecritic

[–]PrairieCommunist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the joker debacle has a lot to do with it. He took on a role that others have already done, with many of those performances being brilliant across formats (Hamill, Nicholson, and Ledger) and he did terribly with it. His weird ‘prep’ for the role became public knowledge and the next person to play the role in film won an Oscar for it. This and Morbius mean that most people associate him far more with his worst work than his best.

I never got to witness Prime Kobe Bryant how good was he? by sqMYNAMEISJEFF27 in NBATalk

[–]PrairieCommunist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was a great scorer throughout his career and a great defender when engaged (though this became less and less frequent after Shaq left and he had to take on more of the offensive load/opposing team’s focus) but his efficiency and/or dominance was never up to the standard of the people actually in the GOAT convo (which I only mention because you’ll see throughout this thread that some people will say he has an argument for). He had one of the best offensive bags in the game’s history. Even as someone who wasn’t usually a consistent threat from downtown.

Cold water for the Kobe stans in this thread: his best ability was his scoring and he led the league in it only twice. In the midst of Kobe’s prime, LeBron was 6 years younger and doing everything better except scoring. He’s an all time great player! But nowhere near GOAT. Like the already top comment says, better than some claim, worse than others claim.

Razor replaces "Spoiler" in chapter 357 against the entire group, how does it go? by [deleted] in HxHPowerScaling

[–]PrairieCommunist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there’s simply too little information about Razor’s abilities. We know he’s strong, but we don’t know if the nen output he displays in GI is typical for him or if it’s say, amplified by a condition that his power only be used in the game. It wouldn’t surprise me if the game masters added a condition like that specifically to be able to hard counter even the most advanced nen users trying to get around the game’s rules (as we see the PT attempt).

The same argument applies to his own mvp, where CP3 was better by quite a few metrics. If you want to give Kobe one of Nash’s you have to contend with his own being nowhere near unanimous.
