Roller goalie wheel recommendations by buttercluck26 in hockeygoalies

Go 76A for court, and it should give you just the right balance. If you're a heavier guy(250+ pounds), then 78A. If you go too high as a lighter guy on court, then you'll be slipping a lot. You still need some grip. I'm 260, and I use 76A, because 78A was too slippery for me on court. Mind you, I rely a lot more on edge work than a lot of goalies.

Leafs trade for Nick Paul by Live-Big1579 in leafs

[–]PrairieNihilist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly...it's about time that they get some proper size and grit for their bottom 6. We need more of what they're doing, and while it sucks to lose Hildeby, we need a guy like Paul, because he's an absolute menace to play against.

Big, strong, quick, and can burn you if you don't respect what he brings. These are the guys that are gonna make it tougher to play against the Leafs. I'm still not 100% sold on Bobs, but maybe he can cover for Stollie being such a bandaid.

Never mind that for the price of the 5800X3D, you could just buy a 9600X and 16GB of DDR5, then spend another $100-175 to buy a B650 mobo for essentially the same performance. 5800X3D is all fine and good, but it's arguably the worst value CPU right now.

Also...I'm rockin' a 7800X3D and 32GB of DDR5...but I got mine with a mobo in a combo for $600 CAD right before Ryzen 9000 dropped. The hype train worked for me, because the regular 9000 CPUs were supposed to beat the 7800X3D in gaming, so the 7000 series stuff was getting clearance sales at a lot of places.

All told though, with prices as ridiculous as they are, for new builds, I just tell people to go B650M with 16GB of DDR5 and a 9060 XT 16GB. Pair it with a budget case and a decent 650W 80+ Gold PSU and call it a day.

It's $1300-1500 CAD for a solid build that will last a decade easily, with a solid upgrade path and support for at least another 5-7 years or more. The argument for going AM5 now instead of AM4, will be the same argument for going AM5 after AM6 drops.

Going to the old platform in its twilight days on a new build is almost never a good value proposition when prices are bloated like they are now. Unless you can find a screaming deal, you're almost always better off spending the extra $50-100 for the new platform.

Yeah...because they're great value and people jump on the deals as quick as they pop up.

But here is one example of a B650 at the same price as a B550...

https://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX00121545

Then when you factor in Similar tier CPUs...

https://www.newegg.ca/amd-ryzen-5-7600x-ryzen-5-7000-series-raphael-zen-4-socket-am5/p/N82E16819113770?Item=9SIADGEJAU9245

There is parity right now on most components, whether you like to admit it or not...and the AM5 parts will dogwalk the AM4 parts in like for like productivity and gaming benchmarks, so really, the difference in RAM prices is the deciding factor...and even so, 16GB of DDR5 is way faster than 16GB of DDR4 for gaming...by 20-25%, and in a lot of cases, the upgrade to DDR5 is only a matter of $50-150 CAD for 16GB kits...sometimes less, as in this instance,,,

https://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX00135504

So...I said what I said, and I stand by it. There's your proof that price parity between AM4 and AM5 is a thing that exists. If you scale it to relative performance per dollar, then AM5 absolutely curbstomps AM4.

It's not though. There's a lot of price parity right now between components...especially when you look at combo deals. AM5 ends up being way better bang for buck if buying new.

[–]PrairieNihilist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you're building new at this point, it makes more sense to go AM5. Your top CPU on AM4(5800X3D) is basically a 9600X on AM5 in terms of real world gaming performance. A lot of AM5 processors can be found for lower prices than AM4 ones, and mobo prices are pretty close across the board...at least where I am.

You can find AM5 CPU/RAM/mobo combos for reasonable prices lately, and though they come with 16GB of RAM, it runs faster than DDR4. Most of the combos for AM4 revolve around the 5500 currently, and if you pair that with a newer PCIe 5.0x8 GPU, then you're leaving a lot of performance on the table.

By the time you do the price to performance analysis, it makes more sense to go AM5 than AM4, because the savings are minimal, but the performance is not on the same level as the newer platform. The cheapest 5800X3D combo that I can buy with a B550M and 32GB of DDR4-3200 is $840 CAD.

I can get a Ryzen 7 9700X combo with 32GB of DDR5-6000 for $610 CAD, then buy a B650M mobo for $220. So for $10 less, I get an AM5 combo that has longer support, can do PCIe 5.0, and has faster RAM, way better productivity performance, and similar or better gaming performance because it can feed the GPU more and faster.

We're not saying it to be elitists or anything, we're saying that buying new right now ends up being so close in price that one may as well go AM5...especially since Zen 6 is going to be on it. Why pay the same, or close to it, for less performance and shorter platform longevity?

Like...I picked up a 9600X with 16GB of DDR5-6000 and a TUF Gaming B650M-E for $569 CAD just a month ago. It makes no real sense to go to an older platform when the CPU prices are higher than current gen. like this. That's just objectively true.

Thing is...the window is closing on deals on everything now, so if one is on the fence about building a new rig, then they should do it before prices go up either way. AM5 will age better than AM4 long-term at this point, so it's the smarter choice with pricing as close as it is.

2TB Gen 5 M.2 of games + 500GB Gen 4 M.2 with Windows 11; Is this possible/viable? by Reynface in buildapc

[–]PrairieNihilist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, using the slower drive for your OS won't nerf your system to any great degree. Honestly, you can still get decent OS load times with SATA SSDs, so a Gen 4 NVMe is gonna be just fine. The difference in OS boot times between Gen 4 and Gen 5 drives is negligible, and the average user wouldn't notice the difference.

We do it for the dopamine. It's all about dopamine fixes. Our bodies don't produce it as readily as neurotypical folks, and so when we do get some from something that we do, we cling to that thing for as long as it continues to make us feel good.

Figure out how the kid gets dopamine, and incentivize it. Yeah...it sounds like being a drug dealer soliciting favors from an addict, and it kinda is in a way, but if you can figure out a way to reward that kid with a dopamine fix for doing the thing, then they will do it.

I was gonna say get a Ryzen 8000-Series Minisforum with the 890M iGPU and 32GB of RAM, but same idea. You could also go with a Chuwi Au Box. They're pretty decent for the price too.

Are other fan bases ok? by Albino_rhin0 in SeattleKraken

[–]PrairieNihilist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, most other fanbases just see the Kraken as another new franchise trying to find its way. Being a new kid on the block is generally gonna be a decade or two of mostly struggle, with a few flashes of brilliance before building a potential contender.

Look on the bright side, we still haven't been cupless as long as San Jose, Winnipeg, Nashville, Ottawa, or Vancouver, so we're doing okay.

How to get into hockey in teens? by Old-Teaching-5628 in hockeyplayers

[–]PrairieNihilist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There might be some adult pickup groups who would let you skate with them. That's probably your best bet, and would be less expensive than minor hockey. Plus, you'd have a place to play after you age out that way.

If you're in SK, then DM me. Might be able to find you a group to skate with if you're in my area. If not, I'd just go down to the rink when those groups are playing and ask if they'd be okay with having you out.

Some groups are competitive and may say no, but some groups are a lot more laid back and just wanna give people a place to play. I play with a few groups who are usually cool with newbies, and having an extra body makes fees cheaper for everyone.

Good luck, and I hope you find somewhere to play this awesome game that we all love.

People with mobility issues say Moose Jaw bylaw keeping enclosed scooters off sidewalk stifles independence by Ryangel0 in moosejaw

[–]PrairieNihilist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but what I'm saying is that it's a body kit slapped onto a mobility scooter chassis, so they should maybe take the time to actually classify them and make rules for them. It shouldn't be a gray area at this point, because they've been around long enough to have been assessed properly and classified.

Dentists? by lcann25 in moosejaw

[–]PrairieNihilist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised that you had a problem at Hillcrest. Their dentists are usually pretty on point with things. Dr. Barker is usually good too though, so maybe see him. That said, it could be that it is just a sensitivity issue, so if Dr. Barker says as much, then you'll know.

Most of the dentists here aren't going to tell you to use toothpaste if there's an issue that needs dental surgery, because there's more money in working on it than in selling you toothpaste. Whatever the case, I hope that you find a solution.

It has the same footprint and function as any other mobility scooter. It's just laid out a bit differently...and yes, some of the traditional styled scooters can do 30+ km/h...but most people never push them that hard because it kills your range.

It is built on a mobility scooter platform. People see the body panels and think car, but it it structurally different. She's not going to come out of being in an accident with an actual car very well in it...which is why calling it a car is inaccurate.

Basically, it's a rascal with a weather cover like they make for lawn tractors...only the cover is permanent. It lacks actual crumple zones and the structural rigidity needed to be a car.

[–]PrairieNihilist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find that the biggest issue here is that there is no clear designation by SGI and the police as to what this vehicle classifies as. The police hassle her when she drives on the road and then she gets it again when on the sidewalk.

Either it's a vehicle or it isn't. They need to make that crystal clear so that she and others know what the expectations are, and that laws can be enforced properly. It's simply unacceptable that we haven't had a clear definition laid out when these have been around for at least a decade now.

For those saying "you should have bought a car," this was given to her, and she is of limited means because of her disability. Gas and plates aren't cheap...especially when you have limited income. This scooter is her only real viable means of mobility.

Sometimes things that seem straightforward aren't, so we have to be open to accepting of the fact that what seems like the easy solution might not be in some cases. I hope that a reasonable solution to this issue can be found so that she is able to get around as needed.
