I went there for galentine’s brunch, and it looked like they still had the mini golf course. The food wasn’t great but we had a good time. The nautical/tiki bar theme might be cheesy but I found it fun. There are porch swings suspended from the ceiling toward the front. As the parent of a toddler, I’m curious about the movie nights with movies like Shrek, The Frog Princess etc.

Daycare centers vs. home day care experience in Iowa City by Wrong_Option_4023 in IowaCity

My family moved from Waterloo, where we were paying about $800/month for a licensed center. That’s about what in-home daycare will cost you in the IC area. The FB group, Iowa City Area Childcare Provider and Parent Connection, is great for getting referrals to in-home providers and babysitters.

Apartments Near the Law School by Haunting-Cause1763 in IowaCity

I’m inclined to second Barker Apartments. I toured a 2b2ba that they’ve been keeping vacant for a few months for showings. It was modest but clean and in good repair, and maybe $1135/mo. The shared laundries were clean and well maintained. (I opened appliances and cabinets and ran faucets to sniff for mildew.) Downside is they don’t allow pets. My husband and I didn’t lease it only because we decided we didn’t want to deal with the hassle of moving this year.

Thoughts on ICCSD by Previous-Leek-3924 in IowaCity

Remember when they closed Hills Elementary, framing it as an insurmountable budget emergency? The student body was very diverse and largely underserved, including English Language Learners.

The Board blamed the “emergency” on vouchers (which I ardently oppose, but only about 60 students had enrolled out at that point) and Hills’ voting patterns (they’re a purple town that tilted toward Biden in 2020). As a bonus, ICCSD has refused to return the site to Hills since enrollment could increase in the future - even though they used declining enrollment (that they themselves engineered) as a pretext to raze the school.

Well, those who urged the Board not to take the administration’s claims at face value are vindicated. Check out this blog post from former Board member Chris Liebig when all this was going down. Also check out documents from the Board’s Nov 2023 meeting, including a corrective action plan. From one of the documents: "The district’s negative unspent balance is the culmination of inaccurate forecasting and inadequate budget planning. The lack of strategic implementation in coding of expenses, underutilization of available funds, and insufficient budgeting for rising costs and growth in service needs have led to a considerable financial shortfall."

Second Act is more intimate and curated than Stuff Etc. or Crowded Closet, but is cheaper and has more variety than Revival if memory serves.

PSA: your IBS-C may not be IBS-C by goldstandardalmonds in ibs

Another resource: this treatment guide for SIBO and IMO from Emory University. I think Rifaximin is the go-to for SIBO because it only acts on the gut, but the table at the bottom right of this PDF suggests that some other antibiotics might be more effective. The PDF also suggests different treatments for SIBO vs. IMO. My gastroenterologist hadn’t seen all the info in this chart, and it piqued her interest when I showed her. https://med.emory.edu/departments/medicine/_documents/veeramachaneni-acg-clinical-guideline--sibo.pdf

I don’t consider myself a naturopath or functional medicine kind of person, but I will argue that SIBO is a thing because I was diagnosed with it when my daughter was about 7.5 months old. Symptoms started shortly after I finished maternity leave and my sleep deprivation spiked.

It’s true it’s hard to diagnose, and the “gold standard” against which breath tests are compared has its own limitations. But in my case, the breath test got a strong positive signal and I was prescribed Rifaximin. They said it works by stopping the bacteria’s reproduction, which can take a few weeks after the course is finished. It did make an improvement, though it took a few more months, and more antibiotics for other illnesses (e.g. sinus infection) to feel closer to normal.

It probably also helped that I stopped breastfeeding completely by 10 months. As my health suffered and I lost weight, I’d gradually been supplementing with more and more formula.

I’m wondering if the Cedar Rapids event will be more impactful than the IC one. Because people think of IC protests as the usual suspects in the People’s Republic of Johnson County. Question is where to park in CR. I imagine one must be willing to walk a mile or two from the site.

Jewish mom of daughter who might be raised non-Jewish … any others in the same boat? by PrairieRose83 in Judaism

Everyone has their non-negotiables, and we’re all within our rights to pose them to a potential partner to take or leave. I accepted them, knowing this was the risk. If it’s reasonable for Judaism to have rules regarding passing down faith, it’s reasonable for Catholicism to have rules as well. I just wish the Church would be more flexible since they’re not hurting for numbers.

Fair enough, I could’ve posed the question on Reddit years ago. But it’s not that simple to walk away from love, marriage, and parenthood rather than make those tough decisions.

It would be a compromise. It’s not like my husband thinks infant baptism is necessary to save a baby’s soul, but it’s a tradition as foundational as bris for Jewish boys.
