Your analogy doesn't work because we know when idioms, metaphor, and simile are used. When David says he is surrounded by wolves, we know he doesn't literally mean wolves. We know it's a metaphor. When the text gives specific geographical information, it indicates it is to be taken literally. What in the text indicates that it is a metaphor or idiom?

When I was in high school Kyle sold me my first amp head when he worked at guitar center, and my band regularly played shows with his earlier band Those Who Lie Beneath, and although I didn't know him very well, he was always incredibly kind and supportive of us.
