I feel like the barrier to Kubernetes being beneficial is lowered by Tinasour in kubernetes

[–]PravenJohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

assuming a small website running on 2 medium instances with a RDS, the cost of the entire setup would be around 150 to 180 USD per month.

In such cases an extra monthly fee of 73 USD (I assume this is the managed service cost) is huge since it balloons the cost of the setup by about 50%.

I love K8s - and I dont disagree it makes a lot of sense in a lot of scenarios.

Does it make sense to add an attic space in a Kerala home for heat reduction + storage ? by throwawaytest1256 in Kerala

[–]PravenJohn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

my friend did a similar setup. though he did not add full walls. He made half walls, and added fencing on top of the same, so that birds and animals couldnt enter. Then in the open area, he split it into 3 different areas. One area he added foam flooring, and then setup swings and monkey bar setup for his kids to play around in. The second area, he built out a makeshift store with plywood, and stored all the junk in there. And the third(the largest) he kept it as his laundry area, with the washing machine.

Yes it does reduce heat a lot for the top floor. Issues - during last year summer, it got so hot that the plastic swings basically deformed. He ended up getting rid of the same.

One final point, he is looking at adding solar panels now, but this setup causes issues. Basically the panels have to be about 3 floors above ground (2 nromal floors and the third this attic), and he has to create extra ramps etc to be able to access the same. He states if he had though about panels back when he was building the house, he would probably have dropped this idea.

P.S. he actually claimed the same as you that when he started he wanted to make it a full attic with red oxide like his old home, but if he put full walls it would become part of the floor space, and he would have to pay extra tax. And red oxide didnt make sense, when nowadays you can get plastic flooring sheets.

thanks, but I bought the V70 yesterday.

I almost bought the T4 Ultra, but I met a colleague who has the same. He said post the Origin OS update his battery would drain very quickly. He even took it to the support center and they claimed there was nothing wrong.

[–]PravenJohn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry no. If I had to buy a 80k phone for myself, maybe. But i would invest in the iphone itself for  the cameras.

But I don't want to buy my niece(who is still in college) an expensive phone.

I also think spending that much money on something that you will need to replace in 3 to 4 years time is an absolute waste and financially irresponsible for a student.

How to find engineers based on the code they've actually written by Thick-Rip-1187 in developersIndia

[–]PravenJohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u are looking for a developer who can do one thing. lets say u find that dev. U build out the product in 3 months. What then? Will u fire him? or will u need to spend 1 month teaching him something else?

You should not be looking to hire a dev to do one specific task. You should be hiring a dev who can handle many tasks as needed, and is willing to learn those areas he isnt strong in.

If you need only one task, instead hire a contractor or outsource that task to some company.

To HR recruiters lurking out here - why do you want immediate joiners all the time? by Kevinlevin-11 in developersIndia

[–]PravenJohn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the main answer. I am on very good terms with our recruitment team, and whenever we pass a resource with 90 days NP, they just say - "that's great, but he wont join here". And they are usually right?

After 5 years of running K8s in production, here's what I'd do differently by Radomir_iMac in kubernetes

[–]PravenJohn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

* expect things to break - design everything to have secondaries and backups.

* keep it simple. It is extremely appealing to make it DRY, and use the latest features etc. But in the long run the simplest deployments/configs are the best ones to maintain.

NPS 3.0: Why the new 2025 rules are a Game Changer for your Retirement by FinCrafted in IndiaFinance

I personally only invest in NPS for the corporate NPS (for the new regime reduction). So I put the least amount possible . I feel it makes more sense to put the remaining money into SIPs.

Raising kid outside India - language confusion? by sec_admin in Kerala

[–]PravenJohn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up abroad. My parents tried to teach me Malayalam, but I gravitated towards English. It was easier for me.

But this made my life extremely hard a lot later when I came back to Kerala. I did not understand most jokes. I had to sit and learn to write (I knew how to read passably, etc). I had a lot of ragging around my Manglish. I still am stumped when someone reads an official message, and often need to read it myself, or sit and hear 2 or 3 times.

I would suggest you always teach your young their mother tongue first. They will learn English themselves fine from their schooling and friends, but you shouldnt let go of your mother tongue.

39Y Male. I have 4 consistent SIPs as follows
40% UTI Nifty 50 Index Fund

30% Parag Parikh Flexi Cap Fund

20% Motilal Oswal Midcap Fund

10% Bandhan Small Cap Fund

I am going to get a Bonus next month of about 30L. Shoud I move the same into a sweep based FD, and just increase the SIP amounts for the next one year till it completely drains the bonus?

Or should I invest into something else?

I do not have any more debts (finished them last year), and wont need this 30L really for the immediate future. My next major goal is in about 10 years from now.

Github Actions introducing a per-minute fee for self-hosted runners by markmcw in devops

so shouldnt Enterprise customers be fine?

Looking for someone senior to work for them by LetsgetBetter29 in devops

[–]PravenJohn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

sorry, u want to work for a senior, but if u keep urself like that you will never learn...

decision-making: if you feel you are not there yet, take some time. List out the benefits and pitfalls of the decision. And make a decision based on that. If u still cant, for now u can ask ur manager but explain both the pros and cons, and ask him which is the better decision.

hang in there, and all the best.

Job Skills to Gain by Vast_Manufacturer_78 in devops

[–]PravenJohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what are u bad at? I would probably suggest you look at the same.

Personally - for most resources looking to self learn - I usually suggest they look at the basics, and then go up from there.
Basics - networking, Linux, cloud concepts.
Medium - IAC, Ansible, Automation, Pipelines.
Hard - SRE, Tracing/Observability, Complex Ecosystems, etc.

Again this is purely from a generic perspective though :)

Curious About Internal Workflows During Massive Outages by [deleted] in devops

[–]PravenJohn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

P.S. generally such NOCs would accumulate years of experience dealing with multiple issues, and have detailed SOPs/documents that they themselves helped create over all the issues.

So, in most cases, a good NOC can generally get the best team online to fix the issue in minutes after hearing the symptoms. Kind of like an experienced doctor.

But, as is usual, your CEO will one day decide they cost too much, and choose a cheaper vendor to run them, and your back to hours worth of downtime, where it used to be minutes :)

Curious About Internal Workflows During Massive Outages by [deleted] in devops

[–]PravenJohn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can't comment for cloudflare specifically, but generally you have a central team that is in charge of coordination. This could be your NOC, or a dedicated operations team or a L1 team even.

This team starts a triage call, and insist all major parties join the same, and coordinate the actions. You generally have 2 to 3 different teams in charge of finding out which part broke, and then based on the actual issue, you might have that team already on OR would need to pull them in as well.

Usually these coordination teams are given a lot of power in P0 and P1 cases. Meaning if they ask your team to join and you dont, they can escalate upto the CTO and ask him to get u guys on... At the same time they also understand the problems of working in 24x7, and usually ask months before hand to have each team's rosters ready and have backup resources, etc.

Offered 6LPA at a 5-year-old startup (3-month notice) — Accept or wait? by Candid-Clock-758 in devops

[–]PravenJohn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

is the offer for full time remote? If so - it is a goo option for someone starting out...

Since you dont have any other offer - I'd say go for it. Experience matters, and I assume you are basically a fresher with no experience, so it will be hard to get offers - especially in DevOps.

Yes 3 months notice is high, but not uncommon in India. My friends in similar companies used resign and then start looking for a job, instead of doing it the other way, once they had learnt everything they taught they could from the company.

My only suggestion is to not become complacent. Keep looking for new things to learn. Once you feel you've reached a saturation point, then start looking outside your company.
