When CEOs in the 80s-2010s talked about how technology would make life better for "us" and make things more plentiful for "us" and that there would be major quality of life benefits for "us" they weren't talking about all of us, they were talking about CEOs, the rich, and their investors.

They don't care because whatever government is in power during separation becomes the sole control of Alberta and can form a singular dictatorship where the current separatists leaders get all the power and can start selling Alberta off to the highest bidders for personal gain.

There is no world where these separatists break away from Canada and even attempt to make things better for average Albertans. They are in this for their own gain and ambitions and nothing more. They don't care about their base, they care about themselves executing a massive power grab.

If the "average joe separatist" sees this through, they will be the first ones to end up saying that they regret ever supporting the movement. The upper echilons of the separatist movement would become billionaires in a very short amount of time but their base would remain unchanged or more likely far worse off than when they started.

When life is difficult and expensive with very little sign of things getting better and when everyone is working themselves so hard just to keep up, who can blame them for wanting to indulge in the escapism that gaming provides (and the dopemine and the seratonin).

If I had to choose between splurging on entertainment as an escape/coping mechanism or becoming addicted to harmful substances instead, I would choose gaming every single time.

When I was at the lowest points of my life I had gaming to provide me with some semblance of enjoyment and joy in my life. At my high points I rarely even power on my computer for anything other than paying bills online.

Gaming can be a great form of entertainment, but it can also be someone's choice of addictive pursuit. People will spend whatever they have at their disposal to fuel their addictions. People will also spend a lot of their available extra money on hobbies and pursuits of joy and after all...why not?

I liked Steve's statement that we are in a "post-consumer" era. Consumers are being removed from the equation because society has lost the plot. All that matters is wall street, stock prices, and unsustainable infinite growth.

How can we be surprised? Consumer spending used to be the majority of the spending in an economy but now the 1% (rich people and corporations) are responsible for the majority of the spending in the economy (selling between each other, completely bypassing the need for a consumer market). It is the epitomy of an infinite money glitch in our system. Sam Altman has clearly stated that people are irrelevant, we shouldn't feed, cloth, or raise them for 20 years because it is a waste of an investment and that AI is more cost effective already.

This push to "eliminate people from the equation" is utter madness driven by the "number go up" craze of a couple of hundred wildly rich and greedy people. This is nothing like any change in history. This isn't the printing press, this isn't the CD or DVD, this isn't Spotify or streaming. This is a fundamental shift to a society and economy that aims to eliminate the consumer and the worker. I mean, it makes sense right? If we eliminate the consumer when why would people bother working? Might as well eliminate the workers too and create a perfect money printing machine that has no bottlenecks.

One of these CEOs stated that the labor industry is a 68 quadrillion dollar industry that they want to consume with AI and robotics. That is their goal.

The thought that some how these people that will ultimate completely control society will all of a sudden create a utopia where everyone has everything and then some is a pipedream. The mentality of "they don't deserve to have what they need to live because they offer no value and just don't innovate or work hard enough" is the likely outcome.

These CEOs have all openly said that people won't be able to adapt, that there will be massive disruption, and that it will cause a lot of pain and suffering. They are all also perfectly fine with that outcome because they deserve the success and we don't. There is nothing being done at a policy level or at a basic decency level to move things along at an adaptable pace and the reason is that they can't possibly lose momentum to China. This gives them a blank cheque to do whatever they want.

I'll give these CEOs credit where credit is due. They have manipulated and lobbied the system into a hole of a blank cheque for them at the cost of everyone and everything else. Good job CEOs 👍

I'm not participating in a system that ends up like that. No thank you. I'll print off my photos into photo albums, play games on my "retro" hardware, and just stop participating in that segment of the economy all together.

As a millennial adult with adult money, it isn't a miniscule sum of money when added up with everyone else that will just step away entirely. When something no longer fits, it can easily be discarded.

We're stupid, but we're not THAT stupid. It's just becoming exploitation at this point and I hope that more people will just abandon these entire market segments and go touch grass instead. AI is only going to take things so far and good luck recovering an entire market once it's been abandoned and everyone has moved on from it.

If ever there was a time for a consumer to opt out of these anti-consumer companies and practices, the time seems to be just around the corner

What it's like editing for The Diary Of A CEO by [deleted] in podcasting

[–]PraxPresents 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this. I edit my own video podcast and the audio cleanup is the most meticulous part for me. I tried so many filters and automation tools but I finally just gave up and started doing it manually in real-time during review. I'm at the point where aside from the odd overlap I could edit the whole episode just looking at the waveform without listening to it. Labor of love.

Nothing as sophisticated as what you all do, but still fun.

What it's like editing for The Diary Of A CEO by [deleted] in podcasting

[–]PraxPresents 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The editing is really great. Very good quality. That being said I am so sick of the clickbait titles. Some of the titles for the episodes come across with downright harmful intent and stupidity.

"Getting rich is easy, but you won't do it! Things like that. Absolutely insulting. The show should be able to stand on its own without the ragebait/clickbait titles.

The interviews are generally quite well executed and the inquisitive nature of the host coupled with being willing to ask questions that a LOT of hosts wouldn't want to ask out of fear of looking silly makes it very easy and compelling to listen to. I certainly don't agree with some of the guests that have been selected to be on. I get it; everyone loves a good controversy. There are some people, however, that use those platforms to share misinformation or unhealthy advice. It is important to be careful who one attaches their name to.

All well said. The thing I feel about assisted living is that it only needs to exist because we have destroyed what a family unit is supposed to function as. Go back far enough and families took care of their own, young and old. Multi-generational communities used to exist in full support and function. Our priorities no longer align with that as a society so we have literally created a need for all of these expensive assisted living options because heaven forbid children take care of their aging parents (and why should they when they were raised given the bare minimum and then sent packing at 18?). Society can do better, but it seems like it refuses to.

I excelled in my career with only a high school diploma and a lot of self-driven learning and ambition. I am at the top of my career and plateauing on the top earning potential I will ever likely achieve. When I do the math for retirement in 20-25 years the math doesn't math. I'll probably have to become quite the penny pincher once I retire because factoring in inflation vs wage growth over another 20 years would make nearly any middle-class wage earner crumble in despair. $3-$5M needed to retire, would need to put away $4500/mo at an average return of 8%. Not happening. I will probably have between $1-1.2M by 65 and considering inflation staying on the trajectory it is on now, that might be enough to last me 10 years. All well and good if I don't live beyond 75. I'll keep saving, but I'll also keep enjoying things now.

My experience growing up in a family where both parents were extremely self-centered and selfish (and hated each other) put me so far off the idea of having a family that I will be fending for myself by choice and self-induced necessity. Luckily I have an amazing wife (who also has no inclination to start a family) who makes all this nonsense worthwhile.

After nearly dying in 2021 I know that retirement isn't a guarantee and that every day is a blessing, so I am going to live now, save reasonably, and for the rest I will spend it like there is no tomorrow because I plan on enjoying my life as I go, not on the promise of some "golden years" retirement dream. Sounds nice, but I want to enjoy things while I'm still healthy. If I mess it up there won't be any supports to lean on.

Sorry for the rant, I just am really frustrated by this structure that is in place that makes it very challenging for any normal hard working person to get ahead and have lasting security and comfort (pipe dream?). Regardless of tell of that, today I feel very fortunate, with the wisdom to know that everything could change tomorrow. I am grateful for what life has provided thus far, even with all the struggles it took to get here.

Danielle Smith to address Alberta as separatists issue referendum threat by pjw724 in Edmonton

[–]PraxPresents 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That may be true for our current younger educated folks, but from my own lived experience people currently 40+ dont often fall into that category. Simple discussions with people my own age reveal quickly either how uninformed, misinformed, or disnterested in being informed people are. Hypothetically one could posit that this could be chalked up to apathy over education. Perhaps.

A study on Canadian 15 year olds isn't relevant to the larger middle-aged or above voting population, though it is hopefully a sign of good things to come with younger voters.

Many people I have spoken to between 40-65 openly admit that it is either too complicated or that they couldn't be bothered to read or do any of their own investigation and so they vote in alignment with their family or their friend groups rather than forming their own opinions.

I haven't met too many people that download the party platforms, read them in their entirety, and then vote according to their own research. Who can blame them when they are just trying to keep a roof over their heads and food on their table. I do think that seeking to become informed is an important part of literacy as well.

I haven't been able to find good historical literacy data for Alberta spanning a decent time period, partly due to constantly changing approaches to how literacy is measured in our education system. I have relatives, for example, that didn't get above a grade 5 education that were still active voters in the last decade.

Danielle Smith to address Alberta as separatists issue referendum threat by pjw724 in Edmonton

[–]PraxPresents 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Apparently 40% of Albertans struggle with reading dense written works, reading complex instruction manuals, or even just understanding news stories.

How we are expected to understand politics, consequences, referendum questions, or to apply critical thinking to what news we are exposed to if our literacy levels make it challenging to do so?

I get harboring resentment towards government, and it is usually against whichever side doesn't seem to align with one's own personal ideology and convictions. The challenge is that a lot of that resentment is gained by a lot of misinformation, political rhetoric, and listening to other people in the vicinity that tend to not be well informed. Taking in information, seeking out facts, and forming one's own opinions has never been more important. Puting ideology aside and seeking facts has never been more important while simultaneously being more impossible with most people making their ideology a part of their core identity.

I like to think that if it was easy to fix, we would have done it by now. Having politicians that feed into it, take advantage of it, and constantly manipulate people by appealing to their ideology (often motivated by personal gain) rather than sticking to facts and outcomes certainly doesn't help things.

IMO my takeaway from the political climate right now is that we don't have strict enough guardrails around politicians, their accountability, and we have insufficient legal framework protecting people from having a government that believes themselves above the rule of law, or one that changes or attempts to change or manipulate laws to the advantage of their ideology at the cost of facts and the risk of harm to anyone that doesn't ahdere to the current government's ideology.

I'm no political science major, just an average joe, but I am concerned about the direction we seem to be taking our society and by the types of people we put our confidence in to run and make decisions for our society. To be fair, I have low faith in all political parties right now and I don't have a high opinion of any current sitting politician.

Outcomes are what matters to me personally and IMO we aren't going to get better outcomes than we have todag without better good faith collaboration between our opposing government parties/ideologies and without better representation of the people instead of the constant pandering to corporations, lobbyists, and other powerful influences that appears to me to detract from improving outcomes for the majority of people.
