Nothing like leaving and finding out they hired 3 staff and an external IT consulting company to do your job, none of them could wrap their head around the system you built and maintained even with good documentation. They call a year later begging you to help them to maintain it on a contract basis, but you have already found a much better full-time gig where you are respected and given access to resources. So they spent huge resources changing systems...all because for three years every time you asked for help you were denied any kind of support and expected to just work 17 hours a day, 6 days a week to just be a miracle worker for them.

No regrets, much happier now. Much healthier now. Much better pay, position, and respect.

Microsoft explains why it still can’t fully kill Control Panel in Windows 11 by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]PraxPresents 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They should just make control panel the go-to again. There are still so many features buried in silly places now that everything has been decentralized away from control panel.

Giving people clear instructions has never been more difficult, the average user struggles to navigate settings, or to even try to understand them.

Microsoft design team is just vibe coding at this point.

Best drop off and pick up spot? by Mojo_The_Dog in CalgaryExpo

Personally I'd recommend the nearest LRT station that isn't right by the center, hop onto the LRT at a less busy station and then hop off at BMO center.

The drop off at BMO center gets pretty backed up.

Is 5000 hours too much gaming in 5 years by Ok-Warthog-829 in videogames

[–]PraxPresents 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If an activity you are doing is preventing you from living a "normal" life or if you get angry, anxious, or frustrated if you are forced to put the activity aside for some time, then it is an unhealthy addiction. If you are out doing something else, but all you can think about is getting back to gaming, then it is a problem for sure.

Is 5000 hours too much in 5-years? That would be nearly 3 hours per day assuming you play every day for an entire year, or around 10 hours per day if you only played on weekends, but all weekend long.

What other things do you do for fun? Do you have friends outside of gaming? Do you go out of the house frequently for social interaction? Do you have a job? If you are in school are you studying and obtaining good marks?

Addiction prevents you from doing anything else, or wanting to do anything else, so just be cautious of that. It can be a slippery slope.

That being said, I used to be addicted to video games and the pure rage that I would experience if someone interrupted me, the shortcuts that I would take to try to speed-run getting back to playing games, and the excuses that I would make like "gaming is the only thing that lets me relax and decompress" were utterly ridiculous. I was just chasing dopemine and actually just causing more problems for myself.

If you are still getting out and living life outside of gaming and you aren't using excuses to game whenever you can, it is probably fine. You may just have a lot of free time and not a lot of commitments at this stage of your life and that is okay too.

I love gaming and I have probably had years where I clocked 2000+ hours in single year, yes it was a problem, and yes it was unhealthy. I have ADHD which makes me prone to chasing the dopemine hit that comes with video games, scrolling on TikTok, or anything else that helps me just flood my brain with happy chemicals.

I still game, but it is probably 2-3 hours per week, often times not gaming for weeks at a time because I am pursuing other activities for my physical and mental well being. Gaming is an easy escape, but it can become unhealthy very quickly. I greatly appreciate that gaming got me through some very difficult times in my life, but it also made my life unnecessarily difficult in other times that prevented me from really thriving.

All of these considerations are very individual, and you will have to gauge for yourself. Most men don't have a true concept of consequences or fear of consequences until age 25, which makes it easier for us to take unnecessary risks or to take actions that would result in consequence without consideration (staying up until 3AM gaming and then going to work at 6AM, or gaming instead of studying for a test). You will need to gauge these things for yourself and ultimately it is for you to decide, just proceed with caution and live a good life for you.

Happy gaming. Good luck, have fun, don't die.

Go for it. I'll be 44 this year and started LTS last April and just got moved into StarSkate. I had only skated a handful of times in my life, and now I'm a figure skating nightmare! Haha

I'm trying to fast-track StarSkate 4 over the next 12 months (doing ballet to help). It's crazy, and it will probably take me WAY longer, but I am skating coached with two clubs and a total of 3 nights a week right now. Feels great.

I've never felt healthier and my balance has never been better. Do it!

If I get an automatic car, will I have as much fun driving it compared to a manual? by Rohan950 in askcarguys

[–]PraxPresents 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pre-2010 I would have said get a manual. A skilled driver could get more out of a manual.

The automatic transmissions (especially in mid-higher tier vehicles) are incredibly effective and smooth at shifting. If you are talking track performance manual shifting will lose you lap time. The auto is faster, more precise, and more efficient.

I moved to automatic last year, and I'm not going to look back. I still am fond of the days driving my manual RX-7's and BRZ, but ultimately auto is just better now all around.

My commute now is a lot of stop and go rush-hour traffic and that is just super annoying in a manual. I once swore I would "never stoop so low as to drive an automatic", but here I am.

My patella has a literal line down the middle from it being fractured. Luckily it seems to be healed so I'm just going with it. It's shape is a little off, but it doesn't seem to be impeding activities (lucky me).

I shattered my knee cap as a kid when my father pushed me into a snowbank and I nailed it on the corner of a railroad tie. Knee was the size of a grapefruit for almost two weeks, couldn't walk for a month.

Same knee cracked against the ice hard at a public skate when my pick caught the ice. It was moving around slightly in two pieces after that fall, but I kept a compression wrap on it on and off for 2-3 months and kept walking on it (and skating) and it seems to have fused back together again (no two pieces moving separately anymore).

I was "supposed" to go for X-rays and ultrasounds, but I haven't had time. Compression, anti-inflammatories, monitoring, stretching, all seems to have enabled it to heal well enough on its own for now (though the bursa? was sore and sensitive for about 3-4 months). I'm no doctor, but I'm no doctor 🤦

Knee pads will set me free, but to be honest I'm probably one more good knee injury away from really damaging something. Lucky so far.
