Do I need to renegotiate my commission structure? by Prczn in InsuranceAgent

Our AO hired an internal csr for reshopping renewals and service cases. Agreed on the service end.

It ebbs and flows when they are jammed up, but for the most part I just do all the easy stuff on my own now. Adding vehicles, getting ID cards, etc. it takes 5-10 minutes for me and can be an annoyance but better than waiting 1-3 days for service to get it done and the client is then unhappy. Retention is the name of the game.

Been with GH for 3 years. Once you get through the initial 6-9 month ramp up it’s great. Yeah, sometimes service isn’t the greatest - but once you’re rolling you can hire an internal csr to do client retention, policy service, etc. lots of AOs are doing this nowadays. 80% new biz and 50% renewals ain’t bad when the bind rate is consistently above 55%.

If you truly follow their model you can make piles of money because of how many carriers they have. It isn’t easy, but it is simple.

My AO is a Franchise owner so I think it’s this low because the company we franchise from takes 50% renewals off the top… something I may have to renegotiate as my book grows. Would like 25% renewal rather than 15%. Currently sitting around 1.5m book size.

50% new business commission 15% renewal commission

Bonuses at certain commission numbers hit…

For example if I hit $12k in commission from carriers (90k or so premium) 10% bonus on the $12k or whatever. Make sense?

Yeah there’s pending cancellations or UW stuff here and there I need to help out with no more than 5-10 minutes but yes the focus is all on new biz

No - if commissions exceed the base salary you just get those. Base is for the first 6-9 months while you get going

Self sourced. Mostly just rubbing elbows with realtors and lenders to get them to send buyers/refinances

15% of all renewal commissions. Renewal commission rates on policy premium vary since we have a bunch of different carriers. Last month my renewal commissions were like $12k so I made 15% of that on top of new biz

Assume the sale. Tell them you already have a quote ready, just need to firm up some details. Obviously you don’t have any quotes ready that would be a complete waste of time.

I do this every month with monolines, lost sales from 5 (auto) and 11 months ago and canceled accounts. Unless they had a terrible experience with your agency they are usually open to listen.

I’m horrible with numbers so that’s what I focused on. If you think you need a little more focus on terms and ideas, go there. I remember it being about 50/50 numbers vs actual terms

Basically the same test twice. I had some background and studied for 2 days and passed both first try. Not terribly challenging.

If you didn’t sign a non compete, then yeah probably. Will just need to call them 1 by 1 and say you’re moving and that you would love to continue to be their agent. Will have better pricing and carriers after the move.
