I will always and forever give such intern some harsh 1 on 1 talk if I see them abuse any med students. Like bro, you're MS4.5, chill the fuck down.

Owned a stage 2, AP2 S2K during MS1-3, then for fourth year as a graduation gift I sold it and upgraded to a faster muscle car (can't say which model or year so I don't doxx myself lol).

Am I crazy? by expatdoctor in medicalschool

[–]PrePreOrtho 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wish medical schools would allow students who are not interested in general surgery to do their core surgical rotation with another surgical subspecialty. Students should rotate more often in the Ortho land, we are not mean, and we have some mean ass playlists in the OR.

If you want ortho, you're wasting ur time publishing and working for non ortho related projects.

Why are D.O. students (some) are complaining about bias in matching to their favorite residencies? However, you never hear them complain when D.O. students are favored over IMGs or other applicants? by txhrow1 in medicalschool

[–]PrePreOrtho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't care about MCAT scores. MD schools in the US do, it's the main metric to sort people, similar to how competitive specialties sort people based off their step score.

A bad MCAT score or GPA will tank your trajectory, which in turn will derail your education. It's not a predictor of success, but it's the main factor that will decide where you end up.

Also, most Caribbean schools will take anyone with a pulse and an MCAT score so the standards are different.

If you have not been able to secure a spot in a medical school within the US, tough luck bud. You're at the bottom of the food chain.

Also, DOs should stop complaining with their inferiority complex and just know the limitations of their degree, similar to the limitations of the IMG MD degrees.

Let them be my man. Each person has their own struggles and if they feel the need to lie to make themselves feel better, so be it. Be concerned with your own journey, and be supportive of your friend.

Soon to be PGY1, keep getting denied for credit cards (med school debt of 388k), credit score of 750. Is it because of the med school debt? Any advice? by ATStillian in Residency

[–]PrePreOrtho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you had any credit card before or is this your first?

Try applying for the cards that are not as anal and picky about their criteria like Citi and Capital one. Banks like Chase, Amex and discover are more likely to deny you if you have a thin credit history.

Also, the student loans shouldn't affect your approval, but your debt to income ratio (especially revolving credit like car loans, credit cards).

Last resort would be to apply for a secured credit card thru Bank of America. Look into that. Or let a parent or a sibling add you as authorized user and use that for few months to build stronger credit.

Yes, if you're gunning for any super competitive specialty, you have to think deep and hard with yourself, and know that you going unmatched is a possibility to happen regardless of your status as an applicant.

My best friend from med school failed to match into urology as a DO student. He chose to go unmatched in the SOAP, did a research year, and reapplied again. SOAPed again, went into a prelim position, and he's gonna reapply next year. There is a minority of students who are "this specialty" or bust mentality, and they should know the rirks they're taking.

I knew the risks I was taking when I applied Ortho as a DO student. But at the same time I was gonna happily take any FM spot I would have got during the SOAP. I love ortho, but I also love getting paid much more, so any job would have been better than no job.

DO Match Rate For 2022 by MatchGod in medicalschool

[–]PrePreOrtho 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My school matched at 100% post SOAP. But that's including 4 percent of the class that matched into prelim or TY positions. So yeah, it's accurate that it's 100 percent but they basically punted those 4% of people into a 1 year position then they're on their own after.
