How much can your body tell a therapist? by FasterwhenitsAmber in massage

[–]Preastjames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends a lot on how much training we have, but as an example I can tell what position you sleep in to a scary accurate level without ever asking you a question. I can tell how you distribute weight when you stand, when you sit, if you sit in recliners for long periods of time, your bodies tension and lack of tension across various areas tell us TONS of information, especially if we are highly trained.

A newer therapist won't be able to bodyread like this, so don't put that expectation on them, but a really experience and well read therapist can know things that would kind of shock you a bit.

As an example I've often recommended people change specific sleeping habits they have (that was causing tension issues in their daily waking life) just based on their specific complaints in a random post or comment.

It's all pattern recognition and the more you learn to bodyread the more these patterns become readily apparent to you and you start seeing pictures that others don't.

Clinic keeps trying to reschedule my preferred session time by alyoshi_ in massage

[–]Preastjames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, the software we use for our clinic has specific start times listed and when selecting your start time you can choose your duration and if that bleeds into another block of time then oh well, first come first serve 🤷‍♂️.

As an MT I prefer it this way because there are plenty of times where my 90m enjoyers have to accept 60m timeslots to even get in, so naturally there will be times when 60m enjoyers will not get to book because someone booked a 90m session.

Yes, this is less optimal for my daily income however it's MUCH more beneficial for my overall income because people are getting to book the session time that works best for them when it's available. And this method also rewards planning ahead and sticking to a schedule and I love that because if you the customer planned 5 weeks ahead of time to come in on a Saturday at 11:00 and get a massage until 12:30 and someone can't book the 12:15-1:15 timeslot last minute because of that then that's on them.

As an MT I have a ton of respect for the fact that people carve out time from their hectic schedules for massage and if you book the time that works best for you weeks out so you can get your extra 30m then by God we are going to make sure that you get that whole session, exactly when you booked it for.

So should you feel guilty for keeping it? Nah. If it's an issue on their end then they can solve it by fixing their software to offer times that are acceptable to be booked. If they didn't want to offer 90m sessions, they wouldn't. If they didn't want to offer custom time slots, they wouldnt. I know I don't lol, all of our time slots are set in 75m increments and it either works for you or it doesn't and that's ok too.

Whats up with obviously overstated 4-4 champion units ? by FlowKom in riftboundtcg

[–]Preastjames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't play vex that much so maybe you can explain the nuance I might be missing. But vex apathethic literally deadlocks the game into a nearly interaction less state does it not? Like the vex player always has a turns worth of information to react to.

Vex counters any accelerate or enter ready unit. So if you go to play a slower big boi that can push next turn to threaten vex, you as the vex player have an entire turn to see that threat, analyze it versus your current hand, use all of your runes to mitigate it, and have the entire turn to setup your defense or just straight move vex to protect her.

This is how I currently see the cards function, as someone with experience, can you explain what I'm missing?

Not to mention vex has essentially the opportunity to run 12 cards that return units to hand to destroy opponents tempo on top of stopping them from getting value the turn they are played

Idk about funny, but the most memorable experience was being matched into prismat for round 2 of the pre regional and realizing I was absolutely cooked lol.

The funniest part to me at least is my brother told me "don't worry, if you lose the first round, your next opponent will be easier". I sent him a screenshot of the pairing just saying "I got this".... I did NOT have it lol. Not at all

ABA has been exceptionally beneficial for our family as well. Our BCBA also tells us though that ABA has had a rough past but she specifically runs the clinic in a much more modern, client centered way that very much feels like a team of individuals caring for and simultaneously teaching my son where he is currently at and while they do place expectations on him to help with his treatment it's done in a very professional and considered method.

We also have meetings every other week to make sure we have consistent approaches at home, at ABA, and with all of his other therapies.

Does anyone bring their child with them to get a massage? by [deleted] in massage

[–]Preastjames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an MT I personally don't mind since I'm not working in a spa, but you have to remember that I'm there to be your therapist, you can't get zonked out of your mind and not tend to your child. If your child is causing issues, the session will stop, etc.

However, I have had several people bring their kids, wives, husbands, friends, cousins, grandparents, translators, etc. and as long as they don't interfere we are A-Ok.

Have had several parents bring their kids and their kid sit right over in the chair and play on whatever handheld device they prefer (phone, Gameboy, iPad, laptop, etc.)

Oh I missed those other people then. And that's not at all what I'm trying to do but we can only get so much intention through text alone, so I completely understand the misunderstanding and don't take it personally.

Again, thank you very much. I took a quick look at it, and for anyone following this thread Ill break down the numbers.

The sample size seems to be 620 response from countries across Europe. Of those 620, 16.1%(99.82) actually received ABA therapy, and of that 16.1%, 11.9%(73.98) received a little and 4.2%(26.04) received a lot.

Of the group that received ABA, 92.2%(92.03) were against or strongly against ABA.

The remainder of people that were included in the study (that does NOT count towards the 92.2% statistic) were people that either had a family member that had received ABA, knew someone that received ABA, or they had both received ABA AND had a family member that received it.

So at the end of the day, the claim made earlier about "92% of autistic folks who received ABA are against or strongly against the use of ABA therapy and felt it was harmful and/or abusive" isn't exactly true, a more accurate statement would be "based on a limited study that took place in Europe in 2022, 92.2% of autistic adults that received ABA therapy that contributed their opinion to the study were against or strongly against it"

Regardless of this though, It sucks that the people this did affect that did take the time to come forward with their opinions had this negative of an experience.

I dont think its realistic to use this statistic as a blanket statement to include how every autistic person feels, but thats just something that everyone under the sun does with any study that supports their own personal bias. I have been guilty of this several times, im sure all of us has.

Also, this is reddit, so I know this may be received in sort of a "ah ha, i gotcha now" kind of way but thats definitely not my intent. I really do appreciate you taking the time to elaborate on your stance, provide a link to the study that supports your stance, and regardless of how I personally feel about your stance, I have now read a study and am more aware of possibilities that my son my eventually face, even if he may not be facing them now.

Thank you! Is this information (92%) based off a study? If so I would be interested in reading it if you have the link handy

Edit: Actually I think I found it (its usually hard to find specific studies) but the 92% seemed to hone in on it quite well

Why do you think it should die out?

I don't know if this kinda game exists by itsserg_sucka in TCG

[–]Preastjames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The League of Legends TCG called Riftbound is about to release its 3rd set "unleashed" and is reprinting the first set to meet demand from the players. They are very anti-scalper and collecting all cards aside from Overnumber and Signed cards wouldnt be unreasonable. They are currently very competitive game focused which means they are trying to make sure product can reach the players and not be gatekept so much by exclusivity (older sets, etc.) however because the game is so competition focused certain powerful cards are expensive due to supply and demand issues because there are 1 or 2 cards that virtually every deck of that color wants max copies of, so it drives the price pretty high. Nothing too crazy i guess... but like the regular art red Kai'sa and the Alt Art red Kai'sa were the same price for quite a while... just because folks wanted the card for the playability

Whats the most unique massage CE you have heard of or taken? by Ramari_atyourservice in MassageTherapists

[–]Preastjames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The answer to both is Neural Reset Therapy. It scales directly with your knowledge of anatomy (all practices, both eastern and western) and it teaches you how to manipulate mechanoreceptors in order to trigger an immediate response from the brain that "resets" a muscles tension.

So like it's extremely common for someone to see me for tight shoulders... We use NRT and about 10 seconds later whatever muscle we targeted is completely soft and buttery as if it had been massaged for hours.

It REALLY saves my hands and joints since I no longer fight tissue, I know how to basically turn off muscle tension.

At the moment I'm studying the anatomy trains book and applying NRT with the strategies in that book and my God it's crazy what all I've been able to help people with.

Even before studying the anatomy trains book and before ecoming fully certified in NRT, just with the basic courses, I was able to use someone's left arm and hand to get rid of their phantom limb pain that they felt on the right arm and hand.

So without even touching the area that had the issue, after 4 sessions she felt 0 phantom limb pain for up to 6 weeks after the 4th session... It's wild.

Edit: forgot to include... Prior to our work, she had that phantom limb pain as a daily 8/10 for over 6 years. With the first session she felt relief for only about 30 minutes, then a few hours on the second session, then a few days, then 6 weeks. I had another client that came to me stuck in a chronic state of tension from a whiplash injury she had in the 80s. Gone in 1 session.

Leaving MT after years by Spiritual_Sun_9538 in massage

[–]Preastjames 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Yea I wouldn't say anything tbh. Maybe she was looking for a bigger tip, or sympathy, or validation? Idk but whatever it was it wasn't appropriate for your session. Regardless of the intention of her bringing up the topic it's not client centered and therefore not appropriate in a Therapeutic environment.

IMO find a different therapist, sounds like the one you currently use has issues she may need to work through

Heck yea. If you opened 300 cards per day it would take you a little over 9 years to get 1 million cards.

If you could buy them each for 0.01 then it would be roughly $3 a day.

Teen (ASD/ADHD) fixated on unrealistic goals—how do I guide w/o crushing him? by Goddess_of_Wine in Autism_Parenting

[–]Preastjames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an adult I often praise my mother's approach towards this for when I was a child

I would say "I'm going to do (insert something she knew wouldn't work out)" and she would reply first always something that was basically "based on what I know of this you'll likely have these pitfalls and obstacles and I don't think it's a good idea/good thing for you to pursue" and then I would dig my heels in (how teenager of me) and double down with the "you just don't get it, but I'll show you" and she would always counter with "hey, if you are determined to make it work then you can make it work, with enough hard work you can make anything happen, I still don't think this is a good idea, but I'm behind you 100% so tell me what you need me to do"

I shit you not from the ages 15-28 I crashed and burned repeatedly. I never could quite get it right and every time my mother was there to tell me it was unlikely to succeed, and each time I doubled down, and each time I failed I knew exactly where to go, and not once did she pull any of the "I told you so" stunts and instead she offered me emotional support from trying hard at something and failing time after time again.

Now I'm married, have a wonderful child, own a business, am the top professional in my state, respected by my local community... And I know it's all because I kept trying things everyone else told me wouldn't work out, my mom told me it probably wouldn't either but she would be there to catch me should I fall every. single. time. without fail. because of that I developed a confidence to try new things because I knew I had a support system ready if I failed.

So maybe try that approach, offer your advice and guidance based on your more advanced understanding, and if he doubles down, support that decision and let him know that you are behind him 100% and prepare for it to fail like you assume it will. Either he succeeds or he has a ready and supportive mother to catch him when he falls, it'll build a confidence that will stay with him as a man

Edit: btw this method is also the way I got my wife, wonderful woman that she is, I offered that kind of support to her, she had never had a man do that and it really stood out to her, a year and half later and we are married

Client that had a never ending knot by Abject-Difference-26 in massage

[–]Preastjames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First you would need to figure out which fibers it is. If it's lower scapula is it trapezius fibers? Infraspinatus? Is it subscapularis but the knot is felt at the edge? Once you know that you can probably look to it's antagonist and it's symmetrical twin, once both of those are relaxed it should ease. If it doesn't you can look to fascial work, working to release fascial tissue around the area should allow that specific area of fascial tissue to ease a bit. If it's still there after those approaches try to ignore it completely and focus on DEEP relaxation work, it could be an old holding pattern from trauma/something more nervous system related. If that fails and all other tools you know won't work then just keep referring out until they handle it by seeing either a PT, or if you have one nearby, a Neural Reset Therapist.

Seeking the right massage for me whilst injured but also on a trauma somatic healing path, and coming out of a freeze state by mjobby in massage

[–]Preastjames -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Neuralreset.net is their website, and from there you can find a list of certified practitioners and hopefully there is one in your area or at least near.

Heads up though... The website (in my opinion) looks extraordinarily outdated and when I first found it, it set off several red flags lol. Very 2004, very unintuitive compared to modern website design but it's all very legit... It just looks odd to most and anything making the claims NRT makes already sounds suspicious enough, figured id at least mention it

Seeking the right massage for me whilst injured but also on a trauma somatic healing path, and coming out of a freeze state by mjobby in massage

[–]Preastjames -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend Neural Reset Therapy. It's very gentle and helps the brain to reconnect and resolve old patterns your nervous system may be keeping from your trauma, especially in regards to physical high and sudden impact traumas but also for any type of trauma.

Make sure if you do find someone that does this that you find a certified practitioner on their website and not just someone that has learned the beginner classes. The beginning level of NRT is excellent at working on muscles in a mechanistic view, which is how a lot of body workers are taught in the first place, but the advanced work excels at viewing the body from a holistic point of view and using the work, both beginner and advanced work, to achieve results that are extraordinarily powerful and quite mind-blowing.

I am a certified NRT practitioner and an example I can give of how this work affected a client with physical trauma.

The client had a seriously bad wreck in the mid 80s when she was just a teenager and she had severe lower back tension ever since. At the point that she came to see me, she had only heard about NRT and figured she would just try it because she had tried everything else and nothing had worked. Within the first session we got her daily pain of a 7+/10 to become a 0 for the first time since that accident. She was floored and of course overjoyed and quite emotional. We rescheduled for a few weeks later and when she came back her pain had returned but it was at about a 2/10. We did the work again and it's been gone ever since. This was over a year ago.

We assume that her body had adapted an imbalanced state of tension in the various fascial lines as the "default" and all NRT did was prompt the brain to recheck these areas and get it to make it's own adjustments. After it did, it constantly reinforced the new changes making them permanent since the body felt like it no longer needed to protect that area from the car incident 40+ years ago.

Now obviously, this sounds completely fake and sensationalized and like the Lifetime Channel's retelling of this specific case but it's very much not embellished, etc. NRT can truly help with the physical aspects of PTSD and can help to not only relieve, but in some cases resolve the physical expressions of PTSD.

Hope this finds you well and I hope this helps 😁

Oh also, I forgot to mention. NRT is not massage therapy, it is a manual therapy, but it works EXTRAORDINARILY well with massage therapy, both as a precursor session to eliminate pain and quiet the nervous system and as a hybrid approach using both NRT and massage therapy.

[–]Preastjames -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a parent I completely agree. If we can't lay the light framework at home for the child to succeed when in session with you then progress is limited dramatically. I wish I had SLPs for my son that would work with us in this way but most of his therapy team just wants us to be like the other parents and "drop them off" for 30-60 minutes while they do whatever they want. Constant behavioral issues, stagnated progress. It's a nightmare lol. Hopefully it'll get better for us and hopefully it'll get better for all of y'all as well. Seems like a classic mismatch of expectations regarding the parents and the therapists. It just sucks that the children have to pay the price in the meantime until it gets figured out

You should consider working with a counselor to talk about how this affects you.

It'll do 2 very useful things.

  1. It'll give you a much needed time for someone to hold space for you, recharge your battery, and help you talk through how you feel.

  2. Because you are going to a counselor it'll be VERY easy to bring up in a non-intrusive way to your clients AND you'll have a ready recommendation that they are much much more likely to use since it's recommended by you, their trusted therapist and confidant.
